Impact of the environment changes on the occurrence of appendicitis: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Appendicitis is one of the most frequent infectious abdominal diseases worldwide. Recent studies suggest that high temperatures … subgroup analysis stratified by age. RESULTS: Between 2013 and 2022, 761,414 patients underwent an appendectomy in France. While the risk of occurrence of appendicitis increased by 6.9% for each 10̊C increase of temperature. Among the other environmental parameters studied, a higher altitude was always associated with an increased risk of appendicitis while t …

A Case of Retained Viable Appendiceal Segment after Perforated Appendicitis.

INTRODUCTION: Conservative management of perforated appendicitis is widely accepted; however, residual appendiceal tissue may persist and lead to delayed complications. We report a rare case of a retained viable appendiceal segment identified during interval appendectomy (IA). CASE PRESENTATION: An 82-year-old patient was treated conservatively for perforated appendicitis without abscess formation but with marked periappendiceal inflammatory changes. Two months after the initial treatment, an IA was planned. Follow-up CT demonstrated enlargement of the appendix compared with the initial imagi…

Non-operative management of acute appendicitis is not readily generalisable to Honduras: a viewpoint from a low-resource setting.

Non-operative management (NOM) of acute appendicitis has been validated by trials such as Appendicitis Acuta and Comparison of Outcomes of Antibiotic Drugs and Appendectomy, with treatment failure rates of approximately 25-30% within one year, raising hopes that a less invasive approach could become the standard of care. However, the conditions underpinning these trials, such as early presentation, reliable imaging, uninterrupted access to antibiotics, structured follow-up, and immediate surgical backup, are not consistently available in Honduras. Up to 54% of patients at a Honduran tertiary c…

Appendiceal diverticular disease: evaluation of the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings in 153 patients.

PURPOSE: Appendiceal diverticular disease (ADD) is an uncommon condition that may clinically and radiologically mimic acute appendicitis and it is associated with a high risk of perforation. Limited awareness and diagnostic challenges frequently result in a diagnosis only after histopathological examination. METHODS: Among 6,853 emergency appendectomies performed between January 2015 and June 2024, 153 patients with histopathologically confirmed ADD were retrospectively analyzed in this study. The demographic data, clinical presentation, imaging findings, operative outcomes, and pathological

A paired sequencing study of goblet cell adenocarcinomas with coincident sessile serrated lesions and low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms.

Appendiceal goblet cell carcinoma (GCA) is a rare tumor type that has no known precursor. In our diagnostic practice, we observed co-occurrence of GCA with sessile serrated lesions (SSLs) and low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs). Reviewing clinical archives, we identified 35 in-house resections of GCA, in which six (17%) harbored coincident SSLs or LAMNs. Here, we performed paired next-generation sequencing of adenocarcinomas and the coincident lesions to investigate the possibility of shared clonal relationships. For comparison, we also performed paired sequencing on three convent

The patient underwent a successful resection of the mass and appendectomy. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnoses of both acute appendicitis and an inflammatory pseudotumor of the cecum. Signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix and terminal ileum: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) with terminal ileum metastasis is extremely rare. There have been no reported cases in domestic and foreign literature. CASE SUMMARY: In this case report, we present an 88-year-old man with appendiceal SRCC with terminal ileum metastasis. The tumour stage was stage pT4bN2M1bG3 IVB, and the Tumour, Node, Metastasis staging system was used. The patient was admitted to our hospital on 12 July, 2022 and underwent laparoscopic appendectomy under general anaesthesia after the examination. The pathological examination that took place 1 week a…

The functional landscape of the appendix microbiome under conditions of health and disease.

Traditionally regarded as a vestigial organ, the appendix is now being reevaluated for its significant function in health and nutrition of h … role in functions of the immune system. Disruption of the Appendix Microbiome (AM), such as through appendectomy, was found to result in lowered diversity of gut microorganisms and an increased risk of various diseases. The potential therapeutic applications of the AM are a particularly promising area of research. The appendix's unique microbial environment an …

Appendicolith as a Sign of Complicated Appendicitis: A Myth or Reality? A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Appendicolith can be incidentally detected on abdominal computer tomography (CT) without any signs of appendicitis. However, it has also been found to be a risk factor for failure of nonoperative management in acute appendicitis. The present retrospective study aimed to evaluate whether appendicolith predicts complicated appendicitis in patients with any appendicitis. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for patients undergoing appendectomy from January 2016 to December 2018. Appendicolith was considered to be present when it was described in a CT scan. RESULTS: …

Combination of clinical information and radiomics models for the differentiation of acute simple appendicitis and non simple appendicitis on CT images.

To investigate the radiomics models for the differentiation of simple and non-simple acute appendicitis. This study retrospectively included 334 appendectomy cases (76 simple and 258 non-simple cases) for acute appendicitis. These cases were divided into training (n = 106) and test cohorts (n = 228). A radiomics model was developed using the radiomic features of the appendix area on CT images as the input variables. A CT model was developed using the clinical and CT features as the input variables. A combined model was developed by combining the radiomics model and clinical information. These …
