[Intracranial arachnoid cysts in children. Apropos of 8 cases].

Eight cases of intracranial arachnoid cysts are reported. They are benign congenital lesions who result from an abnormal development of the earliest arachnoid. A subsequent development is possible. The macrocephaly is the first sign and other symptoms give evidence to the localization. Thanks to the C.T. scan one can make the diagnosis, appraise the repercussion and put the therapeutic indications. The surgical treatment is reserved to symptomatic forms. The peritoneal shunt takes the ablation's place. This method is easier and less liable to complications. The results depend on the localizati

Hydatid cyst antigen B: inducer of inflammatory and apoptotic responses in colon cancer cell lines (SW480 and SW948).

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major global health challenge with a high mortality rate, necessitating the identification of novel therapeutic approaches. The purified Antigen B (AgB) from hydatid cyst fluid is an immunoactive component with known abilities to modulate host immune responses. Given the increasing role of inflammatory pathways in regulating tumor progression or inhibition, this study aimed to investigate the effect of AgB on cell viability and the expression of inflammasome-related genes (including NLRP3, IL-1β, IL-8, and Caspase-1) in human colon cancer cell lines, SW…

Radiologic Characteristics and Clinical Correlates of Quadrigeminal Cistern Arachnoid Cysts: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction Quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cysts (QACs) represent a rare subgroup of arachnoid cysts. Patients may present with headache, visual disturbances, gait imbalance, or nausea, typically secondary to obstructive hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is frequently assessed using the Evans Index (EI). Vertebral artery hypoplasia (VAH) is generally defined as a decrease in the diameter of the vertebral artery. It has been associated with posterior circulation ischemia, vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI), vertigo, and headache. However, the relationship between QAC-related mass effect and vascu

Management of cerebrospinal-fluid-related intracranial abnormalities in frontoethmoidal encephalocele using "Shunt algorithm for frontoethmoidal encephalocele" (SAFE).

A cerebrospinal-fluid-related (CSF-related) problem occurred in 25-30% of frontoethmoidal encephalocele (FEE) cases. Since there was no algorithm or guideline, the judgment to treat the CSF-related problem often relies upon the surgeon's experience. In our institution, the early shunt was preferable to treat the problem, but it added risks to the children. We developed an algorithm, "Shunt Algorithm for Frontoethmoidal Encephalocele" (SAFE), to guide the surgeon in making the most reasonable decision. To evaluate the SAFE's efficacy in reducing unnecessary early shunting for FEE with CSF-relat

Genetic Diversity in Echinococcus multilocularis From the Plateau Vole and Plateau Pika in Jiuzhi County, Qinghai Province, China.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is a highly endemic area of alveolar echinococcosis where a series of intermediate hosts, especially voles and pikas, are infected with Echinococcus multilocularis. The metacestodes of E. multilocularis are fluid-filled, asexually proliferating cysts, and they are mainly found in the host's liver in the form of tumor-like growths. In this study, we investigated the genetic variations of E. multilocularis in four mitochondrial (mt) genes, namely, NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (nad5), adenosine triphosphate subunit 6 (atp6), cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1), and NAD

Sciatic endometriosis induces mechanical hypersensitivity, segmental nerve damage, and robust local inflammation in rats.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common cause of pain including radicular pain. Ectopic endometrial tissue may directly affect peripheral nerves including the sciatic, which has not been modelled in animals. METHODS: We developed a rat model for sciatic endometriosis by grafting a piece of autologous uterine tissue around the sciatic nerve. Control animals underwent a similar surgery but received a graft of pelvic fat tissue. RESULTS: The uterine grafts survived and developed fluid-filled cysts; the adjacent nerve showed signs of swelling and damage. Mechanical and cold hypersensitivity and al

Currarino syndrome: repair of the dysraphic anomalies and resection of the presacral mass in a combined neurosurgical and general surgical approach.

OBJECTIVEIt is well established that Currarino syndrome (CS) may be associated with spinal dysraphism. Here, the authors report on 10 CS patients with dysraphic anomalies who had undergone a combined neurosurgical and general surgical approach to repair the dysraphic anomalies and resect the presacral mass in a single operation. They discuss the spectrum of spinal dysraphism that may coexist in CS in the context of its developmental etiology.METHODSChildren with a confirmed CS diagnosis who had undergone the combined operative approach were identified from a departmental database. Recent advances in clinical and laboratory diagnosis of hydatid cyst: from imaging to recombinant and nanobiosensor-based approaches.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis is a significant parasitic disease that predominantly affects the liver and lungs in humans. Its diagnosis relies mainly on imaging techniques such as ultrasound and computed tomography, supported byserological tests, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoblotting, which are commonly used inhuman serodiagnosis. Conventional serological assays frequently show variable sensitivity, particularly in pulmonary, inactive, or calcified cysts, and may yield false-negative or cross-reactive results. METHODS: Recent advances in recombinant antigen-based

Case report: Abdominal mesothelioma in Atelerix albiventris.

Hedgehogs, as exotic species, are more susceptible to various neoplastic conditions affecting diverse bodily systems, particularly the tegumentary, hemolymphatic, and digestive systems. Among these conditions, epithelial tumors are the most prevalent, followed by round cell tumors and mesenchymal tumors. A striking characteristic is the malignant nature of over 8% of these tumors, leading to a generally unfavorable prognosis. This study aims to present a unique case involving a 2.5 year-old male African pygmy hedgehog in Concepción, Biobío District, Chile, diagnosed with a mesenchymal neoplasi

Diffuse cystic lung disease caused by tuberculosis infection: Case series.

Diffuse cystic lung disease (DCLD) is a complex disease that can be caused by various reasons. Although the chest CT scan plays a vital role in suggesting the etiology of DCLD, it is apt to lead to misdiagnosis simply based on the CT image of the lung. Here, we report a rare case of DCLD caused by tuberculosis and misdiagnosed as pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH). A 60-year-old female DCLD patient with a long-term smoking history was admitted to the hospital because of a dry cough and dyspnea, and the chest CT scan showed diffuse irregular cysts in both lungs. We considered the pa

Hydropic leiomyoma: A radiologic pathologic correlation of a rare uterine tumor.

Hydropic leiomyoma is a rare leiomyoma subtype composed of a conspicuous zonal watery edematous stroma that causes compartmentalization of the smooth muscle cells. It exhibits atypical imaging features which can mimic malignancy, so differential diagnosis with malignant uterine tumors such as leiomyosarcoma is crucial for treatment decisions and patient follow-up. We describe the case of a 54-year-old postmenopausal woman presenting with a fast-growing abdominopelvic tumor associated with abdominal bloating, urinary frequency, and metrorrhagia. Radiologic evaluation depicted a voluminous, well

A rare case of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation: Mimics pneumonia manifestations.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) is a rare malformation, with unknown causes, that affects distal bronchi. It accounts for 25% of congenital pulmonary malformation s and most cases are found in neonates and babies. The mortality rate of prenatally diagnosed cases ranges from 9 to 49%. The risk factors for poor outcome include hydropsfoetalis, microcystic CCAM and the overall size of the lesions. The mainstay of CCAM treatment is surgical excision that prevents complications such as recurrent infections, pneumothorax and malignancy. The genetic landscape of polycystic kidney disease in Ireland.

Polycystic kidney diseases (PKDs) comprise the most common Mendelian forms of renal disease. It is characterised by the development of fluid-filled renal cysts, causing progressive loss of kidney function, culminating in the need for renal replacement therapy or kidney transplant. Ireland represents a valuable region for the genetic study of PKD, as family sizes are traditionally large and the population relatively homogenous. Studying a cohort of 169 patients, we describe the genetic landscape of PKD in Ireland for the first time, compare the clinical features of patients with and without a m

Renal cyst growth is attenuated by a combination treatment of tolvaptan and pioglitazone, while pioglitazone treatment alone is not effective.

Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common monogenic disorders, characterized by the progressive formation of fluid-filled cysts. Tolvaptan is an approved drug for ADPKD patients, but is also associated with multiple side effects. The peroxisome proliferator-activator receptor gamma (PPARγ) agonist pioglitazone slows disease progression in the PCK rat model for PKD. Here, we tested whether a combination treatment of relevant doses of tolvaptan and pioglitazone leads to improved efficacy in an adult-onset PKD mouse model. Tolvaptan indeed slowed PKD progressi
