BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome is rarely accompanied by anterior sacral meningocele (ASM) resulting from erosion of the sacrum by dural ectasia. ASM may induce symptoms due to severe mass effects. ASM may also mimic ovarian cysts, and the risk of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage is high if spontaneous rupture of the cyst occurs. In this study, the authors presented a rare case of ASM with iatrogenic CSF leakage in a 34-year-old woman with suspected Marfan syndrome.
OBSERVATIONS: The patient initially presented with a giant ASM that was first misdiagnosed as an ovarian cyst. Previously, it had b

The present study aimed to analyze if a preformed "hybrid" patient-specific orbital mesh provides a more accurate reconstruction of the orbital floor and a better functional outcome than a standardized, intraoperatively adapted titanium implant. Thirty patients who had undergone surgical reconstruction for isolated, unilateral orbital floor fractures between May 2016 and November 2018 were included in this study. Of these patients, 13 were treated conventionally by intraoperative adjustment of a standardized titanium mesh based on assessing the fracture's shape and extent. For the other 17 pat

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is performed in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) because of the small size of the tumor. It is essential to know the quantitative extent of the tumor before performing this precise partial resection surgery. A three-dimensional printed (3DP) breast surgical guide (BSG) was developed using information obtained from supine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 3D printing technology and it was used for treating patients with breast cancer. Here, we report our experience with the application of the BSG for patients with DCIS. Patients with breast cancer

Pathological angiogenesis, such as that observed in wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is difficult to reproduce in vitro using human-relevant models. Although organ-on-chip (OoC) systems incorporating retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and endothelial barriers have been reported, models integrating human retinal organoids with vascular networks remain limited. Here, we present a fully 3D-printed microfluidic platform for co-culture of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived retinal organoids containing intrinsic RPE regions with endothelial cells. The device, fabricated fro

Progesterone (PG) is used to slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD) in postmenopausal women. However, PG exhibits high lipophilicity, resulting in strong binding to skin tissues and plasma proteins, which may limit its systemic transport via transdermal routes. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) have been highlighted for their potential to enhance drug solubility and facilitate brain-targeted drug delivery for AD treatment. Microneedles (MNs) offer an advanced microtechnology for transdermal drug delivery, significantly improving drug permeation

In this work, we have developed and characterized a first plasma-treated, cell-laden bioink, composed of Pluronic® F127, alginate, and hyaluronic acid (HA). We assessed the physical and biological properties of the ink, both with and without plasma treatment. The results showed that, with plasma treatment, we were able to generate reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in HA solutions with a dependence on HA concentration and achieve near 100% of their release from the complete hydrogel. The material exhibited shear thinning and recovery properties that were not affected by plasma treatme

Cell-based therapies for intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) treatment face significant challenges, including cell damage from injection-induced shear stress and poor survival in the harsh, nutrient-depleted microenvironment of the intervertebral disc. To overcome these challenges, we developed scaffolded spheroids (S-SPH) by integrating human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (hBMSC) spheroids (SPH) into microscaffolds (MS) produced via high-resolution 3D printing, thereby forming injectable tissue-building blocks. We optimized cell seeding density (∼2000 cells/spheroid) and MS fa

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are invasive solid tumors accounting for high mortality. To improve the clinical outcome, a better understanding of the tumor and its microenvironment (TME) is crucial. Three -dimensional (3D) bioprinting is emerging as a powerful tool for recreating the TME in vitro. To establish long-term HNSCC bioprinted constructs for personalized drug-testing, this proof-of-principle study aims to compare two different innovative tunicate-derived nanocellulose (NC) hydrogels against the widely used semi-synthetic gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA). Cell lines of dif

Treating infected wounds is a major clinical challenge, and concerns about bacterial resistance have driven the shift toward natural antimicrobials over antibiotics. Herein, a 3D printed scaffold wound dressing consisting of alginate (Alg) and fucoidan (F) was prepared, and Soluplus (Sol) nanomicelles (NMs) were used to load vanillin (Vn) as a lipophilic antibacterial agent into the 3D printed scaffold. Characterization analyses revealed that the fabricated scaffold exhibited a peak swelling capacity of 294.3 ± 24.1% and underwent a weight loss of 38.0 ± 2.25% following a seven-day immersion i
