Longitudinal examination of the behavioral, language, and social changes in a population of adolescents and young adults with autistic disorder.

This follow-up study evaluates the behavioral, language, and social outcomes in a population of autistic patients initially examined in childhood. We evaluated 102 (63%) of the 163 eligible subjects, including 54 adolescents (12-17 years of age) and 45 adults (> or = 18 years of age). Three patients had died in the interim. Behavior difficulties continued to be a problem in 69% of adolescents and adults. Thirty-five percent of adolescents and 49% of adults engaged in self-injurious behavior, and slightly more than 50% of adolescents and adults exhibited some stereotypic behaviors. Over 90% of

Biobehavioral aspects of cardiovascular disease: progress and prospects.

Cardiovascular disorders pose a major health problem for industrialized societies in terms of excess morbidity and mortality. Hypertension (HT) is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) and cerebrovascular disease. The impact of psychosocial factors, personality traits, genetic-behavioral interactions, sodium sensitivity, obesity, insulin metabolism, and psychophysiology on HT status is discussed. An understanding of pathophysiologic processes is needed to provide a better basis for risk factor reduction and other aspects of treatment. The study of myocardial ischemia appears to

Intersecting Relationships of Psychosocial and Structural Syndemic Problems Among People with HIV in South Africa: Using Network Analysis to Identify Influential Problems.

In South Africa, little is known about interrelationships between syndemic problems among people with HIV (PWH). A better understanding of syndemic problems may yield important information regarding factors amenable to mitigation. We surveyed 194 PWH in Khayelitsha, outside of Cape Town, South Africa. We used network analysis to examine the frequency of 10 syndemic problems and their interrelationships. Syndemic problems among PWH in South Africa were common; 159 (82.8%) participants reported at least 2 co-occurring syndemic problems and 90 (46.9%) endorsed 4 or more. Network analysis revealed

Relation between basal cortisol and reactivity cortisol with externalizing problems: A systematic review✰.

Delinquent behavior describes one of the most severe forms of antisocial and aggressive behavior, causing the highest mental health and public expenditures of problematic behavior in adolescence. Literature suggests that different concentrations of cortisol may serve as a biological marker for a severe antisocial subgroup of adolescents, although from the environmental risk factors that play a role in the development of severe delinquent and aggressive behavior, other neurobiological factors may be important. This review aims to analyze the association of cortisol levels with the development o

Parent, teacher, and peer ratings of physically abused and nonmaltreated children's behavior.

Behavior ratings by parents, teachers, and classmates of physically abused fourth to sixth graders, identified from the New York City Maltreatment Register, and case-matched classroom controls, showed substantial concurrence among informants: Parents and teachers both rated significantly more behavioral disturbance in the abused children, and peers' ratings were significantly correlated with adults' ratings, especially those by teachers. Children's exposure to spouse or partner physical abuse, which had a substantial prevalence among both child-abusing and control families, reduced the differe

Alcohol Problems and Emotion Dysregulation as Predictors of Digital Dating Abuse Perpetration Among College Students.

BACKGROUND: In an increasingly digital world, young people are becoming more vulnerable to an emerging form of intimate partner violence, termed digital dating abuse, where technology facilitates abusive behaviors. Though prior studies suggest that alcohol use/problems and emotion dysregulation are predictors of digital dating abuse, findings on whether these associations vary by gender are mixed. OBJECTIVE: We explored associations among alcohol use/problems, emotion dysregulation, and gender on 3 types of digital dating abuse perpetration: digital coercion (eg, pressuring for explicit image

The Impact of Insufficient Sleep on White Matter Development in Late Childhood and Early Adolescence.

PURPOSE: Sleep is vital for brain development. Animal models have suggested that insufficient sleep affects axons and dendrites (known as neurites). However, the effects of insufficient sleep on neurites during brain development in humans remain understudied. Deriving neurite density index and orientation dispersion index (ODI) in a large sample (N = 1,016; 47.44% girls), we aimed to identify the effects of insufficient sleep on white matter development between late childhood (mean age [standard deviation] = 9.96 [0.62] years) and early adolescence (mean age [standard deviation] = 11.94 [0.64]

Clinical Manifestation of Juvenile and Pediatric HD Patients: A Retrospective Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the clinical manifestation and course of disease in children suffering from Huntington's disease (HD) are rare. Case reports of juvenile HD (onset ≤ 20 years) describe heterogeneous motoric and non-motoric symptoms, often accompanied with a delay in diagnosis. We aimed to describe this rare group of patients, especially with regard to socio-medical aspects and individual or common treatment strategies. In addition, we differentiated between juvenile and the recently defined pediatric HD population (onset < 18 years). METHODS: Out of 2593 individual HD patients treated w

Cognitive, Emotional, and Psychosocial Functioning of Girls Treated with Pharmacological Puberty Blockage for Idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty.

Central precocious puberty (CPP) develops due to premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, resulting in early pubertal changes and rapid bone maturation. CPP is associated with lower adult height and increased risk for development of psychological problems. Standard treatment of CPP is based on postponement of pubertal development by blockade of the HPG axis with gonadotropin releasing hormone analogs (GnRHa) leading to abolition of gonadal sex hormones synthesis. Whereas the hormonal and auxological effects of GnRHa are well-researched, there is a lack of knowledg

Conduct problems among middle adolescents in the community settings: A concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent problem behavior in research and practice has been traditionally categorized as Oppositional Deviant Disorder and Conduct Disorder. However, a significant number of adolescents remain underdiagnosed. To address this issue, the term "Conduct Problem" has emerged as a commonly used descriptor for those who have not yet received a formal diagnosis, particularly within the community. It is crucial for nurses to comprehend the characteristics of these conduct problems to address them effectively. OBJECTIVE: This concept analysis aimed to clarify the concept of conduct proble…

Psychosocial Perspective on Problem Gambling: The role of Social Relationships, Resilience, and COVID-19 Worry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified several psychosocial risks and problem behaviors among vulnerable individuals. Given that gambling has high addictive potential, it is important to consider the underlying mechanisms of problem gambling. This study examined psychosocial factors associated with pandemic-time problem gambling.Cross-sectional data were gathered via an online survey of 18-75-year-old Finnish, Swedish, and British respondents (n = 2,022) who reported having gambled at least occasionally during the pandemic. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and sleep disorders in children.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurocognitive and behavior abnormality commonly seen in childhood and adolescence. Symptoms and consequences of ADHD and sleep problems frequently overlap, and their relationship is complex and bidirectional. To avoid inappropriate diagnosis and inadequate management, mental health professionals should assess sleep problems and disorders in children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD-related symptoms and in those with a diagnosis of ADHD. Screening for other psychiatric comorbidities and the side effects of medications, such as psychostimul

Evaluating vocal fold function.

In the effort to develop a non-invasive method for the evaluation of the vibratory characteristics of the vocal folds in patients with vocal pathology, some of the newer methods for evaluating vocal function in normal speech are being considered. Inverse filtering of the glottal airflow waveform and ways of measuring vocal fold contact area are described and evaluated for their potential use in the clinic. Knowledge of the vibratory behavior of a patient's vocal folds is important to our understanding of problems such as spastic dysphonia, dysphonia plica and functional aphonia as well as the

Reading the Writing on the Wall: Resident Evaluation Measures as Predictors of Performance in Practice.

BACKGROUND: Identifying orthopaedic surgery residents at risk of future professional or practice-related difficulties remains challenging. While knowledge-based assessments such as the Orthopaedic In-Training Examination (OITE) are widely used, they incompletely capture behavioral and professionalism concerns that often underlie significant problems during residency and subsequent practice. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-institution cohort study of 119 orthopaedic surgery residents who entered training between 1978 and 2013. Institutional resident files were reviewed for docume

Profiles of mentalizing in individuals with antisocial behavior: comparing state- and trait-mentalizing.

OBJECTIVES: Mentalizing is a crucial factor in understanding antisocial behavior. The current study focuses on mapping mentalization within a population of patients with antisocial behavior (n = 108) and compares trait and state mentalizing. METHODS: Three instruments were used to assess mentalizing abilities: the Reflective Functioning Scale, an emotion recognition task, and a Virtual Reality experiment. Mentalizing profiles were determined with latent class analyses and subsequently examined their relations. RESULTS: Patients with antisocial behavior exhibited poor mentalizing capacities.

Microstructural White Matter Abnormalities in Children and Adolescents With Narcolepsy Type 1.

BACKGROUND: In 2010, the H1N1 Pandemrix vaccination campaign was followed by a sudden increase in narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). We investigated the brain white matter microstructure in children with onset of NT1 within two years after the Pandemrix vaccination. METHODS: We performed diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on 19 children and adolescents with NT1 and 19 healthy controls. Imaging was performed at a median of 4 years after the diagnosis at a median age of 16 years. For the MRI, we used whole-brain tractography and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS).
