AIMS: Alcohol use disorders increase the need for mechanical ventilation (MV) in critically ill medical, surgical and trauma patients. Studies examining other drug use disorders (DUD) in trauma patients have not demonstrated heightened rates of intensive care unit (ICU) complications. Patients with asthma and concurrent cocaine or heroin use disorders have an increased need for MV. The objective of this study is to determine if the presence of DUD and drug withdrawal syndromes are associated with increased need for MV in medical patients.

BACKGROUND: Fertilisation of land with processed sewage sludges, which often contain low levels of pathogens, endotoxins, and trace amounts of industrial and household chemicals, has become common practice in Western Europe, the US, and Canada. Local governments, however, are increasingly restricting or banning the practice in response to residents reporting adverse health effects. These self-reported illnesses have not been studied and methods for assessing exposures of residential communities to contaminants from processed sewage sludges need to be developed.

Pectus carinatum is an uncommon malformation that is often more symptomatic than the appearance suggests, and one that physicians often do not refer for surgical correction. Hospital records of 90 patients who underwent repair of pectus carinatum deformities between 1970 and 2000 were reviewed. During the same period another 445 patients underwent repair of excavatum deformities. The principal result of the development of hemovigilance since 1994 has been the declaration of undesirable effects likely to be due to transfusions of labile blood products. Using the 1,694 cases of undesirable effects registered, it seemed worthwhile to us to analyze the distribution of the signs noticed, their frequency and the types of blood products responsible. During the 7 year period 1985 to 1991, 170 infants born in Hvidovre Hospital, Denmark, with birthweight < or = 1500 g and gestational age < or = 32 completed weeks survived at least 8 weeks or more and had eye examinations carried out. Mechanical ventilation (MV) is imperative in many forms of acute respiratory failure (ARF). The aim of this work was to review all episodes of MV in a Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) during the 11-year period 1976-1986. Four per cent (n = 1008) of 24,899 admissions to the MICU were treated with MV. The mean age of ventilator-treated patients was 53 +/- 18 years, and obviously it increased during the period of study.
