Orthodontic management of ankylosed permanent posterior teeth: a clinical report of three cases.

Ankylosed permanent posterior teeth may have a better prognosis than has been generally assumed. Three case reports offer testimony to the effectiveness of surgical luxation (loosening) with forced eruption induced by elastic force. Individual teeth, the occlusion, and the alveolar process may be preserved by early and aggressive treatment. The prognosis may be questionable, but the effect is preferable to premature extraction.

Indications of autotransplantation of teeth in orthodontic problem cases.

Autotransplantations of teeth have been widely used in orthodontics, mainly in cases of severe impactions, early loss of permanent teeth, or congenital aplasia. In specific clinical situations, indication of extractions or supernumerary teeth may provide donor teeth for transplantations avoiding prosthetic or implant therapy. Two cases are presented to illustrate the topic, and prognostic factors of autotransplantation are discussed.

Improvement of masticatory function after orthodontic treatment. Two case reports.

In patients with temporomandibular joints dysfunction (TMD), the masticatory function is often altered in that: (1) the intercuspal position (ICP) is less frequently achieved; (2) the mean vertical displacement from ICP at the end of opening is above normal; and (3) the isometric muscle contraction pattern during closure tends to be suppressed. We describe two cases of growing patients with severe malocclusion, who showed the same functional alterations as patients with TMJ before treatment, and normalization of the masticatory function after orthodontics.

Cephalometric norms for craniofacial asymmetry using submental-vertical radiographs.

The submental-vertical (S-V) radiograph has become popular in the assessment of craniofacial asymmetry because of ease in identifying reliable midline reference structures. To date, no standards of asymmetry that use the S-V projection have been reported. Submental-vertical radiographs were obtained on 44 adults. Subjects were excluded if previous orthodontic treatment or temporomandibular joint symptoms were reported. With the use of a system of asymmetry analysis developed by Ritucci and Burstone, asymmetry was reported for cranial base, zygomaxillary complex, and mandibular structures. Mean

The validity of the prediction of Soft Tissue profile changes after LeFort I osteotomy using the dentofacial planner (computer software).

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the prediction of soft tissue changes after LeFort I osteotomy with the DentoFacial Planner (DFP) (computer software). The preoperative and postoperative lateral cephalograms of 21 white adult orthodontic patients (10 males and 11 females) who underwent only LeFort I osteotomy as part of their overall treatment were digitized. A coordinate system of X and Y axes were used to assess the amount and direction of movement of the maxilla. The SN + 7 degrees was the X axis, and a perpendicular to this plane from nasion was the Y axis. The samp

An improved method for airway assessment in children.

Respiratory mode determination using the simultaneous nasal and oral respirometric technique (SNORT) or a head-out body plethysmography can be time-consuming, expensive, and intimidating to children. We have developed an improved method for assessing respiratory mode that uses inductive plethysmography linked to a menu-driven computer program that circumvents some of these problems. An assessment of 29 subjects over as many as nine separate time points suggests that respiratory mode measurements remain fairly uniform in some children, but can vary significantly in others.

Craniofacial structure related to inheritance pattern in amelogenesis imperfecta.

The aim of this study was to investigate the craniofacial structure in 66 children and adolescents, 34 girls and 32 boys, with known clinical manifestations and inheritance patterns for amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), and to compare the results with those obtained in a control group of age and sex matched persons with normal occlusion. The ages ranged from 6.8 to 21.2 years. Clinically, AI was divided into cases characterized by either hypoplasia or hypomineralization of the enamel. In a further subgrouping, eight clinical variants were diagnosed. Measurements of 12 angular and 15 linear, parame

Root resorption after orthodontic treatment: Part 2. Literature review.

All permanent teeth may show microscopic amounts of root resorption that are clinically insignificant and radiographically undetected. Root resorption of permanent teeth is a probable consequence of orthodontic treatment and active tooth movement. The incidence of reported root resorption during orthodontic treatment varies widely among investigators. Usually, extensive resorption does not affect the functional capacity or the effective life of the tooth. Most studies agree that the root resorption process ceases once the active treatment is terminated. Root resorption of the deciduous dentiti

Recent advances in understanding mechanically induced bone remodeling and their relevance to orthodontic theory and practice.

This review highlights recent developments in bone cell biology, evaluates previous research, and offers future direction toward improving our understanding of events that mediate orthodontic tooth movement. The in vivo and in vitro models that have been developed to examine the responses of connective tissues and how they have contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms involved in mechanically induced bone remodeling are discussed in detail. Osteoblasts are now recognized as the cells that control both the resorptive and the formative phases of the remodeling cycle, and receptor studi

Pulpal response to orthognathic surgery: a long-term radiographic study.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the ischemia associated with orthognathic surgery causes long-term pathologic changes in the pulp similar to those documented after traumatic injuries. A total of 93 patients, 21.9 to 63.9 years of age (mean 38.5 years, SD 9.4), consented to participate in a follow-up study ranging from 4.7 to 15.3 years (mean 8.9 years, SD 2.9) after surgery. LeFort I osteotomy was performed on 42 patients and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies on 76 patients. Full-mouth series of periapical radiographs taken at the time of follow-up were compared with pretreatm

Dynamics of tissue changes found after mechanical loading of the rat incisor. II. A three-dimensional longitudinal study of the histopathologic aspects.

The study comprised 60 lower left rat incisors subjected to 2 weeks of loading (19.7 +/- 1.6 gm) and 5 control teeth. After the loading period, 10 rats were killed with the springs in situ, and the remainder were killed in groups of 5 at intervals of 1 through 10 weeks after the springs were removed. The teeth were cross-sectioned serially (2 microns). The distance of each section from the apex and the time of its tissue formation in relation to load removal were calculated. Bone remodeling and dental and periodontal trauma were plotted according to their location on the tooth axis and circumf

Maxillary incisor crown-root relationships in different angle malocclusions.

The long axis of the maxillary incisor root is not always identical to that of the crown. Instead, there is appreciable variation in the crown-root angle, generally with the crown torqued lingual to the root axis. In orthodontic cases assessed before and at the end of full-banded treatment, the crown-root angle was significantly deflected in the Class III molar relationship series, notably so in moderate to severe cases where the maxillary incisors are constrained lingual to the lower arcade. Apical root resorption was not significantly associated with the crown-root angle before or after comp

The effect of facial growth, attrition, and age on the distance from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest in the deciduous dentition.

The aim of this study was to describe the distances from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest (CEJ-ABC) in the deciduous dentition and to relate them to age, facial, and tooth structure in 72 dry human skulls. Age correlated significantly with anterior face height (AntFH), the distance from condyle to gnathion (Co-Gn), lateral face height (LatFH), molar anatomic crown (MAC), and molar space (MS). The CEJ-ABC per skull and for the molars correlated with age, LatFH, AntFH, Co-Gn, MS, and MAC. The CEJ-ABC for the canines and the incisors correlated with age, LatFH, AntFH, and Co-

Trauma as a possible etiologic factor in maxillary canine impaction.

A chain of events in the development of the dentition following trauma is described. Shortening of the root of the lateral incisor or displacement of the tooth bud, both as a sequel to trauma, may affect the path of eruption of the adjacent canine after dental injury. Special attention should be paid to the further development and eruption of the directly and indirectly affected teeth.

Lower third molar development subsequent to second molar extraction.

Development and eruption of lower third molars was examined in 63 subjects who were treated by extraction of second molars. Changes in mesiodistal and buccolingual lower third molar angulation were measured on 60 degrees cephalograms taken before extraction and 3 or more years later. The final position of lower third molars was assessed on models at the end of the observation period by using a scoring system. All lower third molars erupted in periods ranging from 3 to 10 years after extraction. Ninety-nine percent of the third molars upright mesiodistally, but few became as upright as the seco
