Symptoms of Autism, Comorbid Mental Health Conditions and Challenging Behaviors among Toddlers with Down Syndrome at Low Risk for ASD-Characterization Using the BISCUIT-Parts 1-3.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may coexist with Down syndrome (DS). Most studies on this topic involve school-age children, adolescents, or adults with DS. This study looked at ASD symptoms, other mental health problems, and challenging behaviors in toddlers with DS at low risk of ASD. Methods: We used screening tools for autism in toddlers; BISCUIT-Parts 1-3 and Q-CHAT. We compared four groups of children aged 17-37 months: DS, ASD, Atypical Development (AD), and Typically Developing (TD). Results: Children with DS showed lower symptoms of ASD than children with ASD (without DS) a

Children Sleep and Antisocial Behavior: Differential Association of Sleep with Aggression and Rule-Breaking.

There is a strong relationship between sleep and behavioral problems. These findings are often interpreted via environmental explanations, such that poor sleep directly exacerbates or causes symptoms of aggression and behavior problems. However, there are other possible explanations, such that the genes predicting poor sleep also predict aggression or rule-breaking. The current study sought to elucidate the origin of this relationship. The sample was composed of 1030 twin pairs (426 monozygotic and 604 dizygotic). The sample was 51.3% male with a mean age of 8.06 years (range 6-11.96; SD = 1.4

Propranolol treatment of infantile hemangioma is not associated with psychological problems at 7 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Concern has been raised about the potential long-term effects of propranolol treatment for infantile hemangioma (IH). OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess psychologic (social, emotional, behavioral, and executive) functioning in children treated with propranolol for IH. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with IH (6.1-7.6 years of age) treated with propranolol for ≥6 months during infancy, and without other developmental risk factors, were recruited. Parents completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Social Emotional Questionnaire, Child Behavior Checklist, and Strength

Determinants of quality of life in children with colorectal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Health related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is an important outcome in medical care. The aim of our study was to identify characteristics associated with lower HRQoL scores in children with anorectal malformation (ARM) and Hirschsprung disease (HD). METHODS: Patients younger than 18years, with HD or ARM, who were evaluated at our center from April 2014 to August 2015, were identified. The results of comprehensive questionnaires regarding diagnosis, symptoms, comorbidities and previous medical/surgical history, and validated tools to assess urinary status, stooling status and HRQoL were

Traumatic childhood exposures in the lives of male perpetrators of female intimate partner violence.

Despite efforts to use behavior modification interventions for male perpetrators, intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a significant problem in some male-female relationships. Childhood exposure to traumatic violent experiences, especially when untreated, can influence adult behaviors. Little is known about these possible factors in the lives of male perpetrators of IPV and if they influence their violent behavior against female intimate partners. This study's aim was to explore the life perspective of men who have been violent with their female intimate partners using Gadamer's hermeneutic

Illicit drugs, alcohol, and addiction in human immunodeficiency virus.

Drug and alcohol use complicate both the prevention and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Substance use is one of the major engines driving HIV transmission, directly, through the sharing of injection drug use equipment and indirectly, through increasing risky sexual behaviors. Drug and alcohol dependence compromise effective HIV treatment by influencing both access and adherence to antiretroviral therapy. Exposure to addictive substances may have direct immunosuppressive effects independent of their impact on access and adherence to treatment. Measures effective at mi

[Higher brain dysfunction--from the administrative viewpoint].

The "higher brain dysfunction" illustrates various cognitive and behavioral consequences resulted from organic brain damage--attention deficits, memory disorders, executive dysfunction, and disorders of emotion and social communication. These deficits are hard to be visible externally, so patients with such "higher brain problems" are difficult to be appropriately evaluated and treated even in psychiatry service. The patients who have reached to a chronic phase and whose treatments are terminated have been able to live some stable life at home, but exhibit many difficulties in social life, so

Parent-daughter transmission of the androgen receptor gene as an explanation of the effect of father absence on age of menarche.

Based on an evolutionary theory of socialization, Belsky and colleagues proposed that girls exposed to a stressful environment, especially when due to father absence in the first 7 years of life, showed an early onset of puberty, precocious sexuality, and unstable relationships as adults. The authors of this article examined an alternative explanation that a variant X-linked androgen receptor (AR) gene, predisposing the father to behaviors that include family abandonment, may be passed to their daughters causing early puberty, precocious sexuality, and behavior problems. The results of a study

Cognitive and neuropsychological outcomes: more than IQ scores.

Improved survival in preterm infants has broadened interest in cognitive and neuropsychological outcomes. The incidence of major disabilities (moderate/severe mental retardation, neurosensory disorders, epilepsy, cerebral palsy) has remained consistent, but high prevalence/low severity dysfunctions (learning disabilities, ADHD, borderline mental retardation, specific neuropsychological deficits, behavioral disorders) have increased. The follow-up literature contains methodologic problems that make generalizations regarding outcome difficult, and these are discussed. Although mean IQs of former

Perceptions held by obese children and their parents: implications for weight control intervention.

The study was designed to identify some of the psychosocial barriers to compliance in a hospital-based weight control intervention program for adolescents. Forty obese adolescents, 10 to 16 years of age, and their parents were surveyed prior to participation in a behavioral change weight control program at a major teaching hospital. Significant correlations were obtained between weight loss outcome and six factors. In obese adolescents, weight loss was significantly associated with their beliefs regarding: (1) personal control over weight, (2) barriers or difficulty of losing weight, (3) medic

Glass transition in colloidal monolayers controlled by light-induced caging.

We theoretically investigate the glass-transition problem for a quasi-two-dimensional colloidal dense suspension modulated by a one-dimensional periodic external potential as imposed by interfering laser beams. Relying on a mode-coupling approach, we examine the nonequilibrium-state diagram for hard disks as a function of the density and the period of the modulation for various potential strengths. The competition between the local packing and the distortion of the cages induced by the potential leads to a striking nonmonotonic behavior of the glass-transition line, which allows melting of a g

The neurophysiology of sensorimotor prosthetic control.

Movement is a central behavior of daily living; thus lost or compromised movement due to disease, injury, or amputation causes enormous loss of productivity and quality of life. While prosthetics have evolved enormously over the years, restoring natural sensorimotor (SM) control via a prosthesis is a difficult problem which neuroengineering has yet to solve. With a focus on upper limb prosthetics, this perspective article discusses the neurophysiology of motor control under healthy conditions and after amputation, the development of upper limb prostheses from early generations to current state

Vehicle Behavior Discovery and Three-Dimensional Object Detection and Tracking Based on Spatio-Temporal Dependency Knowledge and Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm.

In complex traffic environments, 3D target tracking and detection are often occluded by various stationary and moving objects. When the target is occluded, its apparent characteristics change, resulting in a decrease in the accuracy of tracking and detection. In order to solve this problem, we propose to learn the vehicle behavior from the driving data, predict and calibrate the vehicle trajectory, and finally use the artificial fish swarm algorithm to optimize the tracking results. The experiments show that compared with the CenterTrack method, the proposed method improves the key indicators

Berberine up-regulates the BDNF expression in hippocampus and attenuates corticosterone-induced depressive-like behavior in mice.

Depression is increasingly become a global public healthy problem. This study was to investigate whether berberine could attenuate the depressive-like behavior induced by repeated corticosterone injection and explore the possible mechanisms. The present results showed that exogenous corticosterone injection caused depressive-like behaviors in mice, such as decreased sucrose intake in sucrose preference test (SPT) and increased immobility time in forced swimming test (FST). These behavioral alterations were accompanying with the decreased BDNF mRNA and protein levels in hippocampus and the elev

The leader as a retention specialist.

Retention problems will plague us for the near future. Blanchard and Waghorn (1997) believe that everyone wants to be magnificent, and not just ordinary. Unfortunately, often we expect only the ordinary and not the magnificent. People respond to our expectations. We can help staff to achieve magnificence by providing unconditional love and remembering that people are magnificent. Sometimes their behavior is a problem and certain things block the expression of their greatness, but all people are magnificent.
