Utilization of Algerian calcined clay in sustainable mortars considering thermal treatment and granulometry effects on mechanical properties.

This study investigates the potential of calcined Algerian clay as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) for enhancing the sustainability of cement production by reducing the consumption of clinker and emissions of carbon dioxide (CO₂). The research novelty lies in the comprehensive evaluation of fineness effects, the statistical modelling of mechanical performance, and the assessment of the environmental impact. A case study of practical significance is also provided. Clay was thermally activated at 700 °C to achieve near-complete dihydroxylation, ground to fineness levels of 45 µm and

Cocktail party training induces increased speech intelligibility and decreased cortical activity in bilateral inferior frontal gyri. A functional near-infrared study.

The human brain networks responsible for selectively listening to a voice amid other talkers remain to be clarified. The present study aimed to investigate relationships between cortical activity and performance in a speech-in-speech task, before (Experiment I) and after training-induced improvements (Experiment II). In Experiment I, 74 participants performed a speech-in-speech task while their cortical activity was measured using a functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device. One target talker and one masker talker were simultaneously presented at three different target-to-masker rat

fNIRS-based brain functional response to robot-assisted training for upper-limb in stroke patients with hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted therapy (RAT) has received considerable attention in stroke motor rehabilitation. Characteristics of brain functional response associated with RAT would provide a theoretical basis for choosing the appropriate protocol for a patient. However, the cortical response induced by RAT remains to be fully elucidated due to the lack of dynamic brain functional assessment tools. OBJECTIVE: To guide the implementation of clinical therapy, this study focused on the brain functional responses induced by RAT in patients with different degrees of motor impairment. METHODS: A tot

Human-in-the-Loop Optimization of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation at the Point of Care: A Computational Perspective.

Individual differences in the responsiveness of the brain to transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) are increasingly demonstrated by the large variability in the effects of tES. Anatomically detailed computational brain models have been developed to address this variability; however, static brain models are not “realistic” in accounting for the dynamic state of the brain. Therefore, human-in-the-loop optimization at the point of care is proposed in this perspective article based on systems analysis of the neurovascular effects of tES. First, modal analysis was conducted using a physiologica

Detection of exhaled methane levels for monitoring trauma-related haemorrhage following blunt trauma: study protocol for a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Early recognition and effective treatment of internal bleeding impose a cardinal challenge for trauma teams. The reduction of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) blood flow is among the first compensatory responses to blood loss, thus being a promising candidate as a diagnostic tool for occult haemorrhage. Unfortunately, methods for monitoring the SMA flow have not been elaborated to date. Nevertheless, animal experiments suggest that exhaled methane (CH4) levels correspond to the SMA perfusion. We hypothesise that real-time detection of CH4 concentrations in the exhaled air is

Effects of Different Onset Times of Early Caffeine Treatment on Mesenteric Tissue Oxygenation and Necrotizing Enterocolitis: A Prospective, Randomized Study.

OBJECTIVE: Caffeine treatment is routinely used in premature infants to prevent development of apnea and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Although a limited number of studies have reported that early caffeine treatment may cause development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) by reducing mesenteric blood flow, this issue is still under discussion. The aim of this study is to investigate the possible effect of different onset times of early caffeine treatment on mesenteric tissue oxygen saturation and NEC development in premature infants. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 87 preterm infants with ≤1,250-g bir

Aqueous Synthesis of DNA-Functionalized Near-Infrared AgInS2/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dots.

Biocompatibility, biofunctionality, and chemical stability are essential criteria to be fulfilled by quantum dot (QD) emitters for bio-imaging and -sensing applications. In addition to these criteria, achieving efficient near-infrared (NIR) emission with nontoxic QDs remains very challenging. In this perspective, we developed water-soluble NIR-emitting AgInS2/ZnS core/shell (AIS/ZnS) QDs functionalized with DNA. The newly established aqueous route relying on a two-step hot-injection synthesis led to highly luminescent chalcopyrite-type AIS/ZnS core/shell QDs with an unprecedented photoluminesc

Treatment of breast cancer in vivo by dual photodynamic and photothermal approaches with the aid of curcumin photosensitizer and magnetic nanoparticles.

Breast cancer is a neoplastic disease with a high mortality rate among women. Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) attracted considerable attention because of their minimal invasiveness. The PTT approach works based on hyperthermia generation, and PDT approach employs laser irradiation to activate a reagent named photosensitizer. Therefore, in the current paper, a dual-functioned nanocomposite (NC) was designed for the treatment of breast cancer model in Balb/c mice with the combination of photodynamic and photothermal approaches. Transmission electron microscopy

Fluorescence spectroscopy: a powerful technique for the noninvasive characterization of artwork.

After electronic excitation by ultraviolet or visible radiation, atoms and molecules can undergo thermal or radiative deactivation processes before relaxing to the ground state. They can emit photons with longer wavelengths than the incoming exciting radiation, that is, they can fluoresce in the UV-vis-near-infrared (NIR) range. The study of fluorescence relaxation processes is one of the experimental bases on which modern theories of atomic and molecular structure are founded. Over the past few decades, technological improvements in both optics and electronics have greatly expanded fluorimetr

Randomized double-blind controlled trial comparing the effects of ibuprofen with indomethacin on cerebral hemodynamics in preterm infants with patent ductus arteriosus.

A prospective randomized controlled trial was performed to compare the effects of ibuprofen with indomethacin on cerebral hemodynamics measured using near infrared spectroscopy in preterm infants during treatment for patent ductus arteriosus. Infants were randomly assigned to three intravenous doses of either indomethacin (0.20-0.25 mg/kg, 12 hourly) or ibuprofen (5-10 mg/kg, 24 hourly) and also received a dose of saline. The primary end points of the study were the effects of the first dose on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume. Fifteen infants received indomethacin and 18 re

Cerebral Small Vessel, But Not Large Vessel Disease, Is Associated With Impaired Cerebral Autoregulation During Cardiopulmonary Bypass: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cerebral blood flow (CBF) autoregulation during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with stroke and other adverse outcomes. Large and small arterial stenosis is prevalent in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We hypothesize that large and/or small vessel cerebral arterial disease is associated with impaired cerebral autoregulation during CPB. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of data from 346 patients undergoing cardiac surgery with CPB enrolled in an ongoing prospectively randomized clinical trial of autoregulation monitoring were evaluated. The study pro

Aortic root surgery with circulatory arrest: Predictors of prolonged postoperative hospital stay.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the outcomes of aortic root operations that involve inducing hypothermic circulatory arrest for relatively extensive proximal aortic surgery. We attempted to identify predictors of postoperative hospital length of stay (LOS) and factors that affect postoperative recovery. METHODS: During 2006-2014, 247 of 265 patients (93.2%) with disease extending into the aortic arch survived aortic root operations (206 elective, 41 urgent/emergent) in which hypothermic circulatory arrest with moderate hypothermia was used. Stepwise multivariate regression analysis was perfo

Effectiveness of intraoperative cholangiography using indocyanine green (versus contrast fluid) for the correct assessment of extrahepatic bile ducts during day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: During cholecystectomy, intraoperative cholangiography using contrast fluid (IOC-CF) is still the "gold standard" for biliary tract identification but has many associated pitfalls. A new IOC technique using indocyanine green (IOC-IG) appears to be promising. Here, we studied the effectiveness of IOC-IG (vs IOC-CF) during day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over a 6-month period, we included 23 patients (with no cirrhosis or risk factors for choledocholithiasis) scheduled for day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The primary efficacy criterion was the "

Near-infrared fluorescence sentinel lymph node mapping of the oral cavity in head and neck cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: Elective neck dissection is frequently performed during surgery in head and neck cancer patients. The sentinel lymph node (SLN) procedure can prevent the morbidity of a neck dissection and improve lymph node staging by fine pathology. Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging is a promising technique to identify the sentinel lymph node (SLN) intraoperatively. This feasibility study explored the use of indocyanine green adsorbed to human serum albumin (ICG:HSA) for SLN mapping in head and neck cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 10 consecutive patients with oral cavit

Evaluation of splanchnic oximetry, Doppler flow velocimetry in the superior mesenteric artery and feeding tolerance in very low birth weight IUGR and non-IUGR infants receiving bolus versus continuous enteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND: IUGR infants are thought to have impaired gut function after birth, which may result in intestinal disturbances, ranging from temporary intolerance to the enteral feeding to full-blown NEC.In literature there is no consensus regarding the impact of enteral feeding on intestinal blood flow and hence regarding the best regimen and the best rate of delivering the enteral nutrition. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a randomized, non-pharmacological, single-center, cross-over study including 20 VLBW infants. Inclusion criteria * Weight at birth ranging: 700-1501 grams * Gestational age up to 25

[Behaviour of near-infrared cerebral oximetry readings during percutaneous carotid angioplasty].

BACKGROUND: Transluminal percutaneous carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) carries a risk of cerebral ischemia, hemorrhage, or edema due to relative hyperemia and hemodynamic instability during and after the procedure. Noninvasive monitoring of near-infrared regional cerebral oxygen saturation (SrO2) offers an indirect way to estimate cerebral blood flow. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the behaviour of SrO2 during CAS and the usefulness of this variable for continuous monitoring of cerebral blood flow variation and neurological status.
