In severe cases, posttraumatic cerebral sinus thrombosis can result in venous congestion and persistent intracranial hypertension refractory to both conventional medical therapy and surgical decompression. The authors report a unique case of a patient successfully treated with endovascular mechanical thrombolysis using balloon angioplasty for clinically significant posttraumatic venous sinus thrombosis and review the reported treatments for cerebral venous sinus occlusive disease. This 18-year-old man suffered severe closed head injury from a fall while skateboarding. A head CT scan demonstrat

BACKGROUND: While the majority of terrible triad elbow injuries (ulnohumeral dislocation with radial head and coronoid fractures) are managed surgically, nonoperative treatment may be appropriate in selected patients, but results with this approach have been limited by very small studies.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We assessed (1) functional outcomes using two validated questionnaires, (2) elbow ROM, strength, and stability, (3) the presence of union and arthritis on radiographs, and (4) complications among a group of patients managed nonoperatively for terrible triad injuries.
METHODS: Between 200

OBJECTIVES: Open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humerus fractures through the anterolateral acromial approach, which uses the anterior deltoid raphe and axillary nerve protection, has recently been advocated as a minimally invasive technique. Several recent reports have indicated variable and unpredictable vascular injuries to the humeral-head blood supply after a proximal humerus fracture, and thus a direct approach that minimizes further vascular compromise may be preferable. The purpose of this study was to define the relationship of this surgical interval to the lateral platin

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary nailing and closed reduction are one of the most important treatment strategies for femoral shaft fractures. Malrotation in the femoral shaft is a complication that requires exact investigations. Here we aimed to evaluate and report the outcomes of malrotation of femur in patients with femoral shaft fractures following antegrade intramedullary nailing.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 140 patients who had referred to Shahid-Beheshti Hospital in Abadan, Iran and had undergone antegrade intramedullary fixation for isolated femoral shaft fracture during a 6-year

Nailing technique has changed in recent years in some important aspects which are not limited to the omitted reaming procedure. These changes concern patient positioning, reduction technique, the use of temporary stabilizers such as the 'Pinless', and determination of implant length and diameter. Approach and exposure techniques have been modified to new, less invasive procedures, in order to fulfill technical, functional and aesthetic requirements. Techniques and tricks have been developed for avoidance of fragment diastasis and axial and torsional malalignment. Finally, simple algorithms are

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHT) causes increased bone turnover, leading to reduction in bone mineral density (BMD). Parathyroidectomy is a definitive therapy and improves BMD in adult patients with PHT. However, there are no reports regarding alterations of BMD in pediatric or adolescent patients with PHT. Here, we report a case of a 13-yr-old boy with PHT who was referred to our institution for evaluation of hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism. Radiological investigation revealed an ectopic parathyroid adenoma below the right thyroid lobe. A minimally invasive radio-guided parathyroidecto

The purpose of this report is to describe our experience with the posterior interspinous fusion in the treatment of spinal injury with quadriplegia. The charts and roentgenograms of 22 patients treated with this operation by the senior author (RW) from July 1978 to June 1981 were reviewed retrospectively. Follow-up averaged 19.5 months. All injured spines had significant posterior ligamentous damage. There were 14 fracture-subluxations, two unilateral facet dislocations, and six bilateral facet dislocations. The specific operative indications included six unacceptable closed reductions, nine f

The Sn-9 wt %Zn eutectic alloy is a promising material as a soldering alloy. It has a eutectic temperature (198 °C) close to the Sn-Pb eutectic alloy, low toxicity, low cost, and excellent mechanical properties. However, the Sn-Zn alloys exhibit disadvantages such as low corrosion resistance and low wettability, which limits their practical use in soldering operations. One of the improvement alternatives is modification with aluminum (Al). This element promotes changes in the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. Therefore, the present work aims to study the effect o

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of tibial head fractures can be challenging due to the close anatomic relationship to the knee joint which can be affected including its intraarticular structures. Frequently, soft tissue damages are present which can have a strong impact on the planning and choice of surgical technique. An important therapeutic requirement is the anatomic reconstruction and high primary stability to allow early functional treatment. The aim of the present study was to describe a recent locking device and its surgical technique and to analyse the early results.

PURPOSE: Closed reduction and percutaneous pinning is a reliable technique for treating 2- and 3-part distal radius fractures. There are currently no data that demonstrate the proximity of at-risk nerves and tendons during percutaneous placement of 5 commonly used K-wires. Whereas the previous literature notes the risk of superficial radial nerve injury with K-wire insertion into the radial styloid, the current study provides specific distances, not only to the superficial radial nerve (SRN) but also to the tendons of the first through fifth extensor compartments during K-wire insertion.

PURPOSE: The anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) is susceptible to injury during forearm surgery, particularly open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of radius fractures. This study aimed to analyze the anatomical relationships between the AIN and the radius to identify regions most vulnerable to iatrogenic injury.
METHODS: A cadaveric study was conducted on ten fresh, non-embalmed forearms. Standardized dissections were performed to assess the course of the AIN, its motor branches, and their proximity to bony landmarks. Measurements were taken using a graduated ruler, with reference to th

It is widely believed that information storage in neuronal circuits involves nanoscopic structural changes at synapses, resulting in the formation of synaptic engrams. However, direct evidence for this hypothesis is lacking. To test this conjecture, we combined chemical potentiation, functional analysis by paired pre-postsynaptic recordings, and structural analysis by electron microscopy (EM) and freeze-fracture replica labeling (FRL) at the rodent hippocampal mossy fiber synapse, a key synapse in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus. Biophysical analysis of synaptic transmission reveale

This research investigates the mechanical behavior and damage evolution in cross-ply basalt fiber composites subjected to different loading modes. A modified Arcan rig for simultaneous acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was designed and manufactured to apply quasi-isotropic shear, combined tensile and shear loading, and pure tensile loading on specimens with a central notch. Digital image correlation (DIC) was applied for high-resolution strain measurements. The measured failure strengths of the bio-composite specimens under different loading angles are presented. The different competing failur
