Clinical severity grading of NF2-related schwannomatosis.

BACKGROUND: NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2) is associated with various tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system. There is a wide range of disabilities these patients may suffer from and there is no validated clinical classification for disease severity. We propose a clinical classification consisting of three severity grades to assist in patient management. METHODS: Patient records from 168 patients were screened for most common diagnoses with severe impact on everyday tasks, social interactions and life expectancy. Eight main categories were identified. One point was assigned to

Chronic Electrical Stimulation of the Otolith Organ: Preliminary Results in Humans with Bilateral Vestibulopathy and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral vestibulopathy is an important cause of imbalance that is misdiagnosed. The clinical management of patients with bilateral vestibular loss remains difficult as there is no clear evidence for an effective treatment. In this paper, we try to analyze the effect of chronic electrical stimulation and adaptation to electrical stimulation of the vestibular system in humans when stimulating the otolith organ with a constant pulse train to mitigate imbalance due to bilateral vestibular dysfunction (BVD). METHODS: We included 2 patients in our study with BVD according to Criteri

Feasibility of direct promontory stimulation by bone conduction: A preliminary study of frequency-response characteristics in cats.

BACKGROUND: As an alternative pathway to air conduction, bone conduction is a multipathway process that transmits sound energy to the inner ear through the skull in general. Based on this mechanism, bone conduction devices (BCDs) have been used widely in the rehabilitation of hearing loss. Although great efforts have been devoted to improving BCDs, drawbacks still exist in most categories of BCDs due to the complicated process of bone conduction. We hypothesized that if a bone conduction transducer was placed on the cochlea to stimulate it directly, the attenuation would be minimized, and the

Do we really need a Coupler for the round window application of an AMEI?

OBJECTIVE: Implanting active middle ear implants (AMEI) at the round window has become a standard procedure to restore hearing for patients with moderate inner ear or mixed hearing loss. The round window (RW)-Coupler was developed as an alternative coupling aid to fit smaller RW diameters and require less drilling in the RW niche. The question arises whether using the RW-Coupler is useful and a safe procedure compared with the nonuse of the RW-Coupler MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine German-speaking patients were implanted with either a RW-Coupler attached to an AMEI floating mass transducer

Input-output functions for stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions in normal-hearing adult ears.

Input-output (I/O) functions for stimulus-frequency (SFOAE) and distortion-product (DPOAE) otoacoustic emissions were recorded in 30 normal-hearing adult ears using a nonlinear residual method. SFOAEs were recorded at half octaves from 500-8000 Hz in an L1=L2 paradigm with L2=0 to 85 dB SPL, and in a paradigm with L1 fixed and L2 varied. DPOAEs were elicited with primary levels of Kummer et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103, 3431-3444 (1998)] at f2 frequencies of 2000 and 4000 Hz. Interpretable SFOAE responses were obtained from 1000-6000 Hz in the equal-level paradigm. SFOAE levels were larger tha

The surgical technique for implantation of the temporal bone stimulator (Audiant ABC).

Microsurgical techniques and modern hearing aids are very limited in providing hearing improvement to patients with a vast number of middle ear and external ear canal conditions. A new electromagnetic temporal bone stimulator (TBS), capable of direct stimulation of the cochlea, has been developed. Nothing is placed in the external ear canal. The internal portion of the device is placed in the mastoid portion of the temporal bone, thus completely bypassing the external canal, the ossicles, and the middle ear. This provides stimulation to the inner ear regardless of the condition of the external

A non-coding variant in 5' untranslated region drove up-regulation of pseudo-kinase EPHA10 and caused non-syndromic hearing loss in humans.

Hereditary hearing loss has a genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity. However, it is still difficult to explain this heterogeneity perfectly with known deafness genes. Here, we report a novel causative gene EPHA10 as well as its non-coding variant in 5' untranslated region identified in a family with post-lingual autosomal dominant non-syndromic hearing loss from southern China. One affected member of this family had an ideal hearing restoration after cochlear implantation. We speculated that there were probable deafness-causing abnormalities in the cochlea according to clinical imaging and audi…
