We report a case of subcutaneous ganglion adjacent to the acromioclavicular joint with massive rotator cuff tear [1-7]. An 81-year-old woman presented with a ganglion adjacent to the acromioclavicular joint that had first been identified 9 months earlier. The ganglion had recurred after having been aspirated by her local physician, so she was referred to our hospital. The puncture fluid was yellowish, clear and viscous. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a massive rotator cuff tear with multi- lobular cystic lesions continuous to the acromioclavicular joint, presenting the "geyser sign". Du

Stereotactic guidance is useful for planning an accurate trajectory to the third ventricle. A guiding block with a ball joint was developed for frame-based endoscopy and adaptors for arm-based and armless navigation systems. Between 1992 and 1996, 52 patients were operated on endoscopically in the third ventricle under stereotactic guidance. Thirty-eight ventriculostomies, 13 biopsies and 10 cystic lesions were performed. The coordinates of two points were calculated; one in the foramen of Monro and the second in the third ventricle. The ventriculostomy was performed under endoscopic control b

The differential diagnosis of retrocerebellar fluid collections in infants is important because of the prognostic implications. Usually the diagnoses are easy; however, shunting of the lateral ventricles or of the fluid collections may alter the appearance of the lesions, precluding accurate diagnosis. Under such circumstances a careful study of all the sequential radiologic studies is necessary.

Applying traction to the hip joint normally creates a 'vacuum phenomenon' between the femoral head and the acetabulum. With the presence of fluid in the hip joint, this effect does not occur. Traction radiography thus gives the clinician and radiologist an easy and noninvasive method for detecting fluid in the hip joint. The subsequent article illustrates the potentialities of traction radiography in several hip diseases.

A group of genetic diseases known as polycystic liver disease (PLD) are distinguished by the gradual development of fluid-filled hepatic cysts formed from cholangiocytes and commonly related to primary cilia defects. The NAD salvage pathway, which sustains cellular bioenergetics and supplies a required substrate for tasks important to rapidly multiplying cells, has a rate-limiting phase that is mediated by nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT). In this study, the efficacy and mechanisms of action of FK866, a novel, high-potency NAMPT inhibitor with a good toxicity profile, were assess

INTRODUCTION: The endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach to the sella and parasellar regions is now increasingly used for removal of a variety of lesions localized in the ventral skull base. The advantage of the endoscope is enhanced visualization and improved panoramic view that can result in more complete removal of the tumor. An extensive knowledge of the anatomy is mandatory to approach this region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2009 to March 2020, the endoscopic endonasal approach was used in 153 patients with sellar and parasellar lesions, at our Institution: 136 pituitary

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus, significantly impacts health globally, but is a rare disease in Norway. CE is treated with a combination of anthelmintics and surgery, or percutaneous drainage.
CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her thirties underwent extensive surgery due to disseminated CE in the abdominal cavity and liver. Due to intraoperative cyst rupture with contamination of the abdominal cavity, peritoneal lavage with hypertonic saline (20 % NaCl), a scolicidal agent, was performed for ten minutes before irrigation with physiological saline. Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease of the nervous system, nevertheless, it can remain undetected for a long period of time, especially if it occurs in non endemic areas and regions with low-endemicity. Inadequate diagnostic procedures and lack of clinician's dedication towards this health issue can lead to a missed diagnose. Herein, we present a case of a 51-year-old male, with a missed diagnosis of neurocysticercosis for more than two decades. A history of epilepsy had started twenty-one years earlier and was of unclear etiology. Recently, after neurological worsening and

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common, potentially lethal, monogenic diseases and is caused predominantly by mutations in polycystic kidney disease 1 (PKD1) and PKD2, which encode polycystin 1 (PC1) and PC2, respectively. Over the decades-long course of the disease, patients develop large fluid-filled renal cysts that impair kidney function, leading to end-stage renal disease in ~50% of patients. Despite the identification of numerous dysregulated pathways in ADPKD, the molecular mechanisms underlying the renal dysfunction from mutations in PKD genes an

Almost 25 years after its introduction, optical coherence tomography (OCT) is still a crucial test in the evaluation of patients affected by diabetic retinopathy. In this chapter, the authors provide an extensive overview of the posterior segment pathological changes induced by diabetes, characterized using OCT. OCT plays a key role in diabetic macular edema (DME) as it assesses related retinal changes both in a qualitative (i.e., DME pattern, presence and aspects of cysts, fluid localization, integrity, and reflectivity of retinal layers) and quantitative (i.e., macula volume, central and sec

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common monogenic kidney disease and is responsible for 5-10% of cases of end-stage renal disease worldwide. ADPKD is characterized by the relentless development and growth of cysts, which cause progressive kidney enlargement associated with hypertension, pain, reduced quality of life and eventual kidney failure. Mutations in the PKD1 or PKD2 genes, which encode polycystin-1 (PC1) and polycystin-2 (PC2), respectively, cause ADPKD. However, neither the functions of these proteins nor the molecular mechanisms of ADPKD pathogenesis a

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous resolution of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia has rarely been reported.
CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old man presented to our hospital because of pyrexia (38°C) and shaking chills for 2 days. He had a history of right nephrectomy due to renal cell carcinoma and left upper lobectomy for lung metastasis in the last 1.5 years. Two months previously, he was treated with oral prednisolone (20 mg/day) plus the intravenous mTOR inhibitor, temsirolimus (25 mg/week), for brain metastasis. On radiological examination, thoracic computed tomography showed diffuse ground glass opacities

Dichloroacetate (DCA) is a toxicant by-product from the chlorination disinfection process for municipal water. The levels would not affect people with normal renal and liver function. However, people with impaired renal or liver function may have an increased susceptibility to DCA toxicity as those are the organs affected by DCA. People (and rodents) with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) are polyuric, drink more fluids, and have both renal and liver pathology. In PKD, renal tubules and biliary epithelial cells proliferate to form cysts, which can eventually cause renal and/or liver dysfunction.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a hereditary disorder with abnormal cellular proliferation, fluid accumulation in numerous cysts, remodeling of extracellular matrix, inflammation, and fibrosis in the kidney and liver. The two major types of PKD show autosomal dominant (ADPKD) or autosomal recessive inheritance (ARPKD). ADPKD is one of the most common genetic diseases, with an incidence of 1:500-1,000. Approximately 50% of patients with ADPKD develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD) by the age of 60. On the other hand, ARPKD is relatively rare, with an incidence of approximately 1:20,000-40,00

Endometriosis is a common gynaecological disorder manifesting by implantation and growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. The evidence accumulates that endometriosis may be associated with abrogated regulation of energy balance. Ghrelin is one of the most important orexigenic factor which may also play a role in regulation of inflammatory and angiogenic reactions. The present study was aimed at investigating expression profile of ghrelin and its receptors (GHSR1α and GHSR1β) in endometriotic lesions. The study included ovarian cysts and peritoneal fluid specimens obtained lapa

Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery is a growing field in which the nasal corridors are used to address skull base lesions. Whether the middle turbinates must be removed for adequate exposure is controversial and not well addressed in the literature. This is a prospective, observational study of 163 consecutive cases of purely endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgeries performed at a single tertiary care institution. The primary study outcome measurement is the feasibility of middle turbinate preservation in endoscopic transsphenoidal skull base surgery. The pathologies included 99 pit

Polycystic kidney diseases (PKD) are a group of inherited disorders characterized by morbidity-associated development of renal cysts. Three forms of PKD are described here: The common, late onset, autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD); the mainly infantile, autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD); and the lethal, syndromic, Meckel syndrome that also includes central nervous system and digital defects. Positional cloning approaches based on genetic linkage have identified the disease genes in these disorders. Completion of the Human Genome Project, cases with atypical mutation, and animal models have greatly
