A Survey of Skin Reactions Associated With Acrylic Nail Cosmetics, With a Focus on Home Kits: Is There a Need for Regulation?

Background: Sensitization to (meth)acrylates, the most common nail cosmetic allergens, is rising. In recent years, home acrylic nail kits have become easily available. Objective: To investigate the characteristics of individuals reporting skin reactions associated with acrylic nail cosmetics, particularly home kits. Methods: Cross-sectional survey of Facebook nail allergy support groups. Inclusion criteria were self-reported skin reactions associated with acrylic nails and age ≥18 years. Results: There were 199 respondents, nearly all female (99%), mostly white (83%), and 25-54 years old (83%)

Allergic Contact Dermatitis in the Older Adults: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a significant health problem in older adults. Reports in the literature regarding the prevalence of ACD in older adults are various and inconsistent. In contrast, the data regarding contact irritant dermatitis are more consistent. Objective: To compare ACD characteristics in older adults versus the adult population aged 18-45 years. Methods: We conducted a retrospective controlled study. Data were obtained from the medical records of 4199 patients. We collected information regarding age, gender, atopic diathesis, anatomical distribution of the r

When Foods Cause Itch: Clinical Characteristics, Pathophysiology, and Recommendations for Food-Induced Skin and Mucosal Pruritus.

Itch occurs in various dermatologic and systemic conditions. Many patients report that certain foods instigate itch, although there is limited published information in dermatology on food-induced pruritus. In addition, itch severity is rarely mentioned. Food can induce pruritus through either ingestion or direct contact with skin or mucosal membranes. The most common type of itch provoked by food is acute urticaria, often through the classical immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated pathway. Other mechanisms include non-IgE-mediated, mixed (IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated), T-cell-mediated, and noni

Allergic Contact Dermatitis and Patch Testing in Skin of Color Patients.

Objective: Skin of color patients face important health issues relevant to dermatologists, such as allergic contact dermatitis; however, there is a lack of information surrounding common allergens causing contact dermatitis that disproportionately affect skin of color patients, as well as interpreting patch testing in this population. Methods: Covidence, Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched to identify relevant articles studying allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in skin of color patients. Results: The most common positive reactions in African America

Hair Dyes Sensitization and Cross-Reactions: Challenges and Solutions: A Systematic Review of Hair Dye Allergens' Prevalence.

Widespread use of oxidative hair dyes during the past decades has raised questions on the potential allergy reactions and their management, as well as prevention measures for both professionals and consumers. Allergic contact dermatitis can be elicited by various hair dye-related allergens, though the main problem remains with p-phenylenediamine and related aromatic amines. If allergy is suspected, patch testing identifies the responsible hapten. Individuals sensitized to specific permanent hair dyes substances should avoid the exposure to these chemicals, but also be aware of possible cross-s

Contact Dermatitis in the Surgical Patient: A Focus on Wound Closure Materials.

Irritant and allergic contact dermatitis from wound closure materials can occur in patients after surgical procedures. The resulting inflammation from contact dermatitis can compromise wound healing, mimic surgical site infections, and result in wound dehiscence. Components of wound closure material, such as antibiotic coatings, dyes, sterilizing compounds, or the material itself, have been implicated as contact allergens. This article provides the latest overview of the components of 3 major forms of wound closure materials-sutures, staples, and tissue adhesives-associated with contact dermat

Potential for Allergic Contact Dermatitis in Popular Hair Care Practices and Ingredients.

The incidence of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) due to personal care products is rising in parallel with increasing product availability and consumer interest. Hair products specifically represent a significant source of potential allergens, including preservatives, surfactants, emulsifiers, fragrances, adhesives, and dyes. ACD due to hair care products can present as dermatitis in the distinctive "rinse-off" distribution, involving the neck, eyelids, and lateral face in addition to the scalp. Herein, the authors review ingredients in hair care products that can cause ACD and practical tips

Assessment of Contact Allergens in "Hypoallergenic" Athletic Shoes by Mass Spectrometry.

Background: Identification of athletic shoes for patients with contact allergy is difficult. Company reports of allergen content are often incorrect. Objectives: To determine whether chemical analysis of 4 athletic shoes, previously reported to be free of the most common contact allergens, contain quantifiable allergen levels. Methods: Samples from the uppers and insoles of 4 shoes believed to be free of common allergens were assessed by mass spectrometry. A total of 4 rubber accelerators and 2 adhesives were directly quantified and additional 7 rubber accelerators were assessed using semiquan
