The main aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the clinical, functional, and radiographic outcome of displaced intercondylar fractures of the humerus in children and adolescents, and evaluate upper-extremity function with the short version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand outcome questionnaire (Quick DASH), the hypothesis being that intercondylar fractures have poorer functional outcome than do other upper-limb fractures. The mean age at the time of injury was 11.9±2.5 years (range: 7.5-15.8 years). The male-female ratio was 3.5 : 1. Using the Toniolo & Wilkins cla

The Hill-Sachs lesion is an osseous defect of the humeral head that is typically associated with anterior shoulder instability. The incidence of these lesions in the setting of glenohumeral instability is relatively high and approaches 100% in persons with recurrent anterior shoulder instability. Reverse Hill-Sachs lesion has been described in patients with posterior shoulder instability. Glenoid bone loss is typically associated with the Hill-Sachs lesion in patients with recurrent anterior shoulder instability. The lesion is a bipolar injury, and identification of concomitant glenoid bone lo

A study correlating the degree of medial rotational deformity of the distal humerus and the degree of cubitus varus deformity secondary to supracondylar fracture was performed in 23 patients who underwent corrective supracondylar osteotomy. The mean age of the patients at the time of operation was 10.9 years (range 5-14 years). The time interval from injury to operation averaged 3.2 years (range 1-6 years). A medial rotational deformity occurred in 20 cases. The degree of medial rotational deformity (MRD) averaged 16.2 degrees (range 0-34 degrees). Mean carrying angles (CA) of the deformed and

In the past, supracondylar osteotomy for the correction of cubitus varus deformity has been associated with a high failure rate and significant complications, even in simple lateral closing wedge osteotomy. This is because the supracondylar area is thin and fixation is difficult to maintain. In cubitus varus deformity, not only medial, but posterior, tilt and internal rotation of the distal fragment also frequently occurs. To correct all these deformities and to achieve a wide bony contact and more rigid fixation than simple lateral closing wedge osteotomy, we propose a new three-dimensional o

Several methods for the correction of cubitus varus have been described, but most reported series are small and show a high rate of complications. We report a six-year personal experience of 77 osteotomies by a new technique which provides rigid fixation and allows correction of both varus and rotation deformities. It also prevents lateral bulging at the level of the osteotomy. In 58 cases followed up for an average of 16 months, there were no serious complications, a satisfactory carrying angle and no significant loss of movement, giving 88% excellent or good results.

Cubitus varus following supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children consists of varus, hyperextension, and internal rotation deformities of the distal bone fragment of the humerus. There has been no simple clinical method of measuring internal rotation deformity. The authors report here on a method of accurately measuring the internal rotation of the shoulder in a position with the elbow at 90 degrees flexion on the back and the shoulder held at the maximum extension. When a patient with developing cubitus varus attempts to rotate his shoulder internally, there is an apparent increase in

UNLABELLED: Bioresorbable devices are commonly used in traumatology. The biomechanical stability of these materials has improved in the past decade, and they have proven to be biologically non-hazardous, while their main advantage is that their use avoids reintervention for removal of the device. A prospective monocentric study was conducted: 24 patients presenting with a fracture that was amenable to osteosynthesis by small-diameter screws were included. These comprised ten tibial spine fractures, four osteochondritis dissecans of the distal femur, eight fractures of the medial epicondyle of

Seven cases of intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus were treated by a mini-external fixation technique. The average range of motion was 30 degrees to 110 degrees. All fractures united with radiologic and clinical evidence of union at 10-12 weeks. Open wound sites healed in 6 cases. There were no evidence of any nerve palsies.

INTRODUCTION: Distal humerus fractures are fairly rare. But as our population ages, these fractures become more complex and the choice of treatment more delicate. Poor bone quality results in many technical problems and the fixation hardware stability remains at risk. The goal of this study was to evaluate the functional recovery and morbidity of complex distal humerus fractures in elderly patients when treated with elbow prosthesis.
HYPOTHESIS: Good functional recovery can be achieved with a total joint replacement.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This series consisted of 20 patients (18 women and tw

BACKGROUND: Due to the increasing burden on the heatlhcare system the usefulness of the routinely planned 6-week outpatient visit and radiograph in patients treated surgically for the most common upper extremity fractures, including clavicle, proximal humerus, humeral shaft, olecranon, radial shaft, and distal radius, should be investigated.
METHOD: This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients treated surgically for the most common upper extremity fractures between 2019 and 2022 in a level 1 trauma center. The first outcome of interest was the incidence of abnormalities found on the

BACKGROUND: It is important to predict the occurrence of deep infection in open fractures when treating such fractures. We tried to develop a new scoring system for predicting the occurrence of deep infection in open upper and lower extremity fractures on the basis of the Hannover Fracture Scale'98 (HFS-98).
METHODS: A total of 394 open upper and lower extremity fractures (351 patients) were retrospectively reviewed in the initial analysis. The relationship between Gustilo's grade and the eight items on HFS-98 in the open extremity fractures was first investigated by multivariate analysis. By

UNLABELLED: Pseudoarthrosis and cubitus valgus as main complications following displaced fractures of the radial condyle in children can be prevented by open reduction and fixation by K wires. However, delayed union and stimulation of the radial physis with condylar overgrowth and varisation of the elbow as well as fishtail deformities of the distal end of the humerus are reported nevertheless. To prevent those growth disturbances all primary and secondary (4-day X-ray control) displaced fractures of the radial condyle, i.e. those with a central gap of more than 2 mm, were prospectively treate

Trauma to the extremities is sometimes dismissed as relatively unimportant in certain radiologic circles. In many instances, radiologic responsibility is denied and relegated to the orthopedist. Although the radiologic manifestations of much trauma to the extremities is clear cut and does not require sophisticated techniques or interpretation, there are many diagnoses which require innovative techniques and a knowledge of mechanisms of injury as well as the subtle oseous and soft tissue manifestations which may be confronted radiologically. The above factors will be stressed along with the nee

In this article, data of nerve and bone recovery were reported in a series of patients treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plate in humeral shaft fractures (HSF) associated with radial nerve palsy (RNP). The authors highlight the role of early surgical intervention for optimal nerve repair and patient's recovery, and to avoid subsequent and more complex surgery to patients. This is a retrospective study of 24 of 31 patients with HSF with RNP (10,1%) out of 308 patients with HSF, treated surgically between 2012 and 2023 in a level I Trauma Center. The mean age was 57 y

PURPOSE: Supracondylar humerus (SCH) fractures account for approximately 30% of injuries for those younger than 7 years of age (Cheng et al. in J Pediatr Orthop 19:344-350, 1999). Recent studies examining the association of patient age and SCH fracture outcomes have provided conflicting findings. The purpose of this study is to investigate SCH fracture outcomes in children at different ages of skeletal development.
METHODS: Retrospective review of a Level I pediatric trauma center between 2010 and 2014 was conducted. 190 patients with SCH fractures, age < 14 years, fracture type Gartland III
