Hair Trace Element and Electrolyte Content in Women with Natural and In Vitro Fertilization-Induced Pregnancy.

The objective of the present study was to perform comparative analysis of hair trace element content in women with natural and in vitro fert … hair. Generally, the obtained data demonstrate an elevated risk of copper, iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium deficiency and arsenic overload in women with IVF-induced pregnancy. The obtained data indicate the necessity of regular monitoring of micronutrient status in IVF-pregnant women in order to prevent potential deleterious effects of altered mineral homeostasis.

Patients with Active Acromegaly are at High Risk of 25(OH)D Deficiency.

Acromegaly is a chronic disease characterized by hypersecretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Electrolyte disturbances such as hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia are reported in patients with this disorder. There is limited data on vitamin D status in subjects with acromegaly. The aim of the study was to determine calcium, inorganic phosphate, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, and 25(OH)D levels with regard to the activity of the disease. We also studied correlations of 25(OH)D and IGF-1, GH, body mass, body mass index, and age. A study group consisted of 55

Overrepresentation of multiple birth pregnancies in young infants with four metabolic bone disorders: further evidence that fetal bone loading is a critical determinant of fetal and young infant bone strength.

UNLABELLED: The frequency of multiple birth pregnancies, mostly twin pregnancies, was overrepresented in four different groups of young infants with fractures and bone abnormalities. This finding suggests that fetal bone loading through fetal movement is an important determinant of fetal bone formation and its resultant bone strength. INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that intrauterine confinement related to the multiple birth pregnancy (MBP) may lead to an increased risk for fragility fractures in young infants as a result of decreased fetal bone loading. METHODS: To objectively test this

[A case of hypomagnesemia linked to refractory hypokalemia and hypocalcemia with short bowel syndrome].

We report a case of a 59-year old Japanese woman with short bowel syndrome, whose hypokalemia and hypocalcemia were successfully treated with magnesium (Mg) supplementation. Two years previously, she underwent Mile's operation for advanced rectal cancer, which could have been the cause of subsequent extensive resection of the small intestine by strangulation. After serial resection, she gradually developed chronic diarrhea and anorexia. Three weeks before admission, she developed general fatigue and tetany, and was hospitalized at another hospital. On admission, her serum K and Ca were 2.5 mEq

Ciprofloxacin causes cytoskeletal changes and detachment of human and rat chondrocytes in vitro.

Quinolones cause damage of articular cartilage in different species by forming chelate complexes with divalent cations and inducing magnesium deficiency. Cations are important for regular function of integrins, a group of transmembrane proteins which connect extracellular matrix proteins with the intracellular cytoskeleton. We have shown that cultivation of rat chondrocytes in ciprofloxacin (CFX)-supplemented and Mg(2+)-free medium led to pronounced changes in the cytoskeleton and decreased adhesion of cells to the culture dish. In order to test whether or not these effects are species-specifi…

Good neighbours: current-year needles in Nordmann fir rely on their 1-year-old neighbouring needles for adequate nutrient supply.

The annual transport patterns of mineral nutrients in conifers remain poorly understood. Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) deficiencies often occur in planted conifer stands and cannot be easily remedied by simply adding these nutrients to soil. This study examined translocation and remobilization of Ca and Mg in young Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana) trees. Our data revealed that Ca and Mg absorbed by the roots do not reach the needles during the current growth season, indicating that internal nutrient remobilization is crucial for the growth of new needles, particularly shortly after the budb

Hidden Hunger: A Forgotten Comorbidity of Metabolic-Syndrome-Associated Fatty Liver Disease.

Metabolic-syndrome-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formally recognized as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a growing global health challenge. MAFLD or NAFLD (M/NAFLD) pathophysiology is characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, often driven by metabolic disorders such as obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. Micronutrient deficiencies known as "hidden hunger" remain an underexplored comorbidity of M/NAFLD. Hidden hunger, caused by inadequate intake or poor bioavailability of essential vitamins and minerals, can exacerbate the pathophysiology of M/N

The Role of Magnesium in Acute Pancreatitis and Pancreatic Injury: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: As natural calcium (Ca) antagonist, magnesium (Mg) seems to counteract Ca-signaling pathways involved in the intracellular protease activation leading to acute pancreatitis. We systematically reviewed the current literature to investigate the role of Mg in the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis and its possible use in detecting, predicting, and preventing acute pancreatitis. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed/Scopus/Web of Science to identify in vivo and in vitro studies reporting data on Mg in acute pancreatitis. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included. Due to

Cellular Trace Element Changes in Type 1 Diabetes Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) may lead to deficiencies in trace elements that have substantial functions in the human organism. Changes in serum magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) levels are correlated with metabolic control and diabetes complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra-erythrocyte levels of trace elements and urinary Mg excretion following intravenous (iv) Mg tolerance testing in children with T1DM. METHODS: A total of 43 children aged 2-18 years with T1DM and age/gender-matched 25 healthy children were included in the study. The iv Mg toler

[Micronutrients and phytotherapy in the response to stress].

Introduction: micronutrients fulfil essential functions as cofactors and regulators of the metabolic pathways involved in the response to stress. When present in appropriate quantities, they help to maintain neuroendocrine and immune homeostasis in situations of high physiological demand. Adaptogens can normalize biological functions and strengthen systems affected by stress, protecting the organism against psychological and environmental insults. Objectives: to evaluate the bidirectional relationship between micronutrients and stress, with emphasis on the role of adaptogens. Methods: we revie

Aisles of health? A pediatrician's guide to vitamins and dietary supplements in pharmacies and supermarkets.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In recent years, there have been increased discussions among parents about the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for kids, specifically dietary supplements and vitamins. While these were originally marketed to supplement nutrient needs, many families have begun to raise questions about the efficacy of vitamins and minerals to treat developmental conditions such as attention-hyperactivity deficit disorder, mood disorders, or sleep disturbances. RECENT FINDINGS: Research investigating the use of vitamin supplements generally concludes that supplementation may be n

Aeronutrient Therapy: A New Frontier in Systemic Drug Delivery.

Background: Although the micronutrients (vitamins and trace minerals) essential for growth and normal physiological function are obtained from the diet, a substantial fraction of the human population is deficient in one or more micronutrients due to inadequate nutrition and/or malabsorption. Methods: This narrative review examines evidence that airborne micronutrients ('aeronutrients') are readily absorbed by the lungs, and preclinical and clinical evidence that inhaled iodine and vitamins A, B12 and D can enter the bloodstream. Results: Inhaled vitamin B12 resolves the symptoms and haematolog

Dietary assessment of a group of elderly Spanish people.

The dietary patterns of 60 elderly from Spain (37 women and 23 men) were examined by analysis of the food, energy and nutrient intake during 5 days. The caloric profile was somewhat unbalanced, since the percentage of total energy intake from proteins and lipids was above the recommended limit whereas the proportion of energy derived from carbohydrates was slightly deficient. The degree of underreporting derived by subtracting predicted total daily energy expenditure from self-reported energy intake obtained from a diet control during 5 days is 120 kcal/day in men and 334 kcal/day in women. Decreased cell membrane magnesium in some essential hypertension patients.

The concentrations of total ([T-Mg]), ultrafilterable ([UF-Mg]), and protein-bound or nonfilterable ([NF-Mg]) magnesium were measured in the plasma and in the intracellular compartment of blood from 8 essential hypertensive patients and 9 normotensive subjects. In the former, [T-Mg] was unchanged in the plasma but decreased in whole blood due to decreases of both [UF-Mg] and [NF-MG]; [UF-Mg] was increased in plasma but decreased intracellularly while [NF-Mg] was decreased in plasma and unchanged intracellularly. These concentrations correlated significantly with the average blood pressures. De

Decreased osteoinductive potential of bone matrix from ovariectomized rats.

The effect of estrogen deficiency on matrix-induced bone formation was investigated. Female rats were ovariectomized and given demineralized bone matrix (DBM) intramuscularly 3 weeks before termination. The DBM was taken from previously ovariectomized and from sham-operated on rats. The animals were killed at various times after ovariectomy (6-27 weeks). Implants were processed undemineralized for histologic and biochemical studies. Normal DBM implanted in ovariectomized or normal rats induced extensive bone formation 6 weeks postovariectomy. The amount of newly formed bone decreased with the
