A fourth hominin skull from Dmanisi, Georgia.

Newly discovered Homo remains, stone artifacts, and animal fossils from Dmanisi, Republic of Georgia, provide a basis for better understanding patterns of hominin evolution and behavior in Eurasia ca. 1.77 million years ago. Here we describe a fourth skull that is nearly complete, lacking all but one of its teeth at the time of death. Both the maxillae and the mandible exhibit extensive bone loss due to resorption. This individual is similar to others from the site but supplies information about variation in brain size and craniofacial anatomy within the Dmanisi paleodeme. Although this assemb

Tuberculous otitis media: two case reports and literature review.

Tuberculous otitis media can be difficult to diagnose because it can easily be confused with other acute or chronic middle ear conditions. Compounding this problem is the fact that physicians are generally unfamiliar with the typical features of tuberculous otitis media. Finally, the final diagnosis can be difficult because it requires special culture and pathologic studies. To increase awareness of this condition, we describe two cases of tuberculous otitis media and we review the literature.

Chronic suppurative otitis media.

Restoring precise muscular control in the poststroke wrist/hand (W/H) demands sensorimotor integration to correct compensatory neuroplasticity. However, current rehabilitation robots inadequately modulate ascending somatosensory pathways from specific muscles. This study developed an electromyography (EMG)-driven soft robot with electro-vibro-feedback (EVF-robot) for targeted somatosensory priming in W/H muscles. This system integrates (a) focal vibratory stimulation and neuromuscular electrical stimulation for recruiting the somatosensory pathways of the targeted W/H flexors and extensors; (b

Ossiculoplasty by interposition of a minor columella between the tympanic membrane and stapes head.

This study analyzes short- and long-term results of 436 ossiculoplasties accomplished by a minor columella sculptured in the remnants of the incus and placed between the tympanic membrane and stapes head. Most cases were operated on by a transcanal approach through an ear speculum, under local anesthesia. Cases in which an associated mastoidectomy was performed to remove diseased tissue are excluded. The residual air-bone gap was < 20 dB in 86.1% of cases 2 months after surgery, in 77.0% 1 year later, and then remained stable over time, even in patients seen 5 to 15 years after the operation. …

Eighth cranial nerve dysfunction in hyperostosis cranialis interna.

Hyperostosis cranialis interna is a recently described autosomal dominant bone disorder characterised by hyperostosis and osteosclerosis confined to the skull, especially the calvarium and the skull base. In the affected family members, we found variable simultaneous involvement of cranial nerves I, II, VII and VIII from late childhood onwards, most likely due to nerve entrapment. Auditory and vestibular functions were followed in 3 young family members for 8 years. At the first examination, pure tone audiograms were normal in all 3 cases and case 1 showed no caloric response in the right ear.

Fibrous dysplasia.

Three cases of monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the cranial bones are presented. Several theories of the etiology of this uncommon condition are put forward and the relationship between monostotic and polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, Albright's disease, and hyperparathyroidism is examined. The difficulty in diagnosis and the ways they may present to the ear, nose and throat surgeon are discussed. It is suggested that conservative surgery is the best mode of treatment for maxillary or temporal lesions. However, ethmoid lesions, particularly when the optic foramen or base of skull are eroded, may n
