The critical incident technique (CIT) was used to explore faculty experiences with uncivil nursing students. Twenty-one nursing faculty with various years of experience in teaching were interviewed to ascertain what they considered critical incidents of uncivil encounters with nursing students and what effect those encounters had on them. Thirty-six encounters were described by the faculty. Of the 36 encounters, 33 occurred with individual students and 3 occurred with groups of students. Twenty-three encounters occurred in the context of poor student performance requiring constructive criticis

As a genetic testing for susceptibility to breast, ovarian and colon cancer becomes more readily available, physicians are faced with an increasing demand for information about inherited cancer risk. Because advances in treatment have not kept pace with advances in predictive testing, the provision of genetic counselling and testing marks a departure from the traditional role of the physician. A systematic framework is needed within which the physician's emerging role in predictive testing for heritable cancer can be delineated. The development of such a framework will require collaboration am

BACKGROUND: Families are widely recognised as central actors in hospice and palliative care, and “family-centered care” has become a dominant practice model. However, the ontological and axiological status of the family in many cultural contexts—particularly East Asian Confucian traditions—extends far beyond the functional roles usually described by family-centeredness. This study conceptualizes and clarifies “Family-as-Root” - a culturally grounded, ontological-axiological orientation to family that is widely recognizable in Chinese contexts but remains under-theorized in international hospic

IMPORTANCE: Children with medical complexity (CMC) frequently experience recurrent deterioration requiring life-sustaining treatment (LST) decisions in the pediatric intensive care unit. Parents serve as primary caregivers and decision makers; however, how accumulated caregiving experiences shape thresholds for acceptable LST during crises remains insufficiently understood.
OBJECTIVES: To explore how parents of CMC interpret their longitudinal caregiving experiences and how these interpretations shape parents' orientations toward LST during episodes of clinical deterioration.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynecological cancers among women worldwide and stands out as a significant public health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the preventable nature of the disease, access to early diagnosis and treatment is often limited by structural, individual, and societal barriers. Stigma associated with cervical cancer and HPV is at the forefront of these barriers. Furthermore, spiritual resources are known to play a critical role in coping with the psychosocial burden of the disease. The aim of this study is to examine h

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic created volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) healthcare environments globally, exposing systemic vulnerabilities in leadership preparedness, interprofessional coordination, and staff psychological support as healthcare leaders faced unfamiliar demands, moral distress, and competing priorities.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the lived experiences of physiotherapy, nursing, and medical leaders during COVID-19 at public sector hospitals in the eThekwini District of KwaZulu-Natal, with particular attention to how they navigated systemic constraints, psycholo

BACKGROUND: Cannabis legalization has substantial impacts on public health across the United States, yet the perspectives of local elected officials who oversee regulatory environments and make decisions about cannabis business retail licensing, taxation, and marketing restrictions remain largely unstudied. Understanding how these policymakers prioritize health considerations relative to economic and other concerns is essential for developing effective public health advocacy and anticipating barriers to implementing health-protective cannabis regulations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Prison needle exchange programs (PNEPs) are evidence-based, cost-effective interventions that prevent transmission of blood-borne viruses. PNEPs were introduced in a minority of Canadian federal prisons in 2018; however, participation is contingent on a mandatory approval process known as a "Threat Risk Assessment" (TRA). Although the TRA seeks to protect institutional safety and staff well-being, it has delayed access and restricted program participation. We aimed to explore prison administrators' perceptions of the TRA, including its goals and potential alternatives, wit

INTRODUCTION: Open disclosure (OD) is an open discussion with a patient and/or family member about an incident(s) that resulted in harm to that patient while they were receiving healthcare. It is widely considered an ethical and moral imperative and is what patients and families want when harm occurs. However, there is a dearth of research on patient and family experiences of OD and limited measures available to measure the quality of current processes. This research aimed to address this gap by using an evidence-informed approach to working with experts by experience to co-design a mechanism

INTRODUCTION: The increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) in healthcare education offers innovative ways to enhance collaborative learning and improve patient safety. This narrative review examines the synergistic impact of AI-powered virtual reality (VR) simulations, such as those used in surgical training and patient communication, on knowledge acquisition, clinical skill development, and collaborative competencies among healthcare students. It also explores long-term knowledge retention, ethical considerations within virtual scenarios, and the psychol

INTRODUCTION: Muslim patients may avoid medicines containing ingredients prohibited by their faith (haram), such as alcohol, gelatine, or porcine derivatives. While Islamic law permits exceptions based on necessity (darura) or biotransformation (istihala), the way these principles influence medication adherence and shape patient-healthcare provider (HCP) interaction is underexplored.
AIM: To explore how Muslims apply Islamic reasoning to medication adherence decisions involving medicines containing haram ingredients.
METHOD: Thirteen ethnically diverse Muslim adults were purposively sampled

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians acknowledge that receiving bad news is challenging and life-altering, while recognising that candid communication is needed for effective patient care. In some cultures, patients' relatives commonly ask doctors to hide bad news, with the intention of reducing psychological distress. Although well-intentioned, concealing information has harmful consequences for the patient, their caregivers and the healthcare team. Our study focuses on clinicians' lived experience of this phenomenon. Previous research has provided some exploration of how practitioners navigate this dilemma

BACKGROUND: Emergency medicine (EM) and internal medicine (IM) physicians care for patients in settings where prompt recognition of and effective communication about acute decompensation and the potential for imminent death is crucial to providing goal-concordant care. Competence in these tasks requires dedicated training and facilitated practice in serious illness communication (SIC). Existing simulation-based SIC curricula typically utilize cases in which the diagnosis and prognosis are already established in a medically stable patient, representing a missed opportunity for learners. To fill

INTRODUCTION: Emerging research on values and moralities in drug policy research indicates that policy may become stuck because of value conflicts and tensions. To develop new knowledge in this area, this paper seeks to identify the values that emerged in discussions amongst people with lived and living experience about the legalisation of drugs; and examine the relationships between value positions, synergies and tensions within dialogue about legalisation.
METHODS: The data derived from the qualitative research collected for the UK Drug Policy Voices project and included workshop, creative

BACKGROUND: Understanding a patient's clinical status and setting priorities for their care are two aspects of the constantly changing process of clinical decision-making. One analytical technique that can be helpful in uncertain situations is clinical judgment. Clinicians must deal with contradictory information, lack of time to make decisions, and long-term factors when emergencies occur.
AIM: To examine the ethical issues healthcare professionals faced during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the factors affecting clinical decision-making.
METHODS: This pilot study, whi
