[Survival of the cementless Bousquet dual mobility cup: Minimum 15-year follow-up of 437 total hip arthroplasties].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of a retrospective series of primary arthroplasty with a cementless dual mobility socket and a cemented Charnley type femoral component. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 437 hip replacements performed between 1984 and 1990, in 388 patients. The Bousquet's acetabular component, an original concept of cementless dual mobility socket has been used, associated with a cemented Charnley type femoral component. A clinical and radiologic analysis was done. RESULTS: The outcome is known for 345 hips (79%):

Long-term results of aseptic cemented Charnley revisions.

One hundred eighty low-friction arthroplasties of the hip in 164 patients in first-time revision surgery were operated between 1973 and 1985. This series used only cement fixation, and aseptic loosening and femoral stem fractures were the only indications for revision. The average follow-up period was 11.5 years. Intra-operative and postoperative complications were frequent: femoral shaft fracture (13 cases), femoral shaft perforation (12 cases), deep infection (14 cases), and dislocation (15 cases). Twenty-eight hips were rerevised or removed (resulting in a total cumulative probability of re

Prevalence and risk factors for heparin-bonded expanded polytetrafluoroethylene vascular graft infection after infrainguinal femoropopliteal bypasses.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the prevalence and predictors of prosthetic vascular graft infection (PVGI) in a multicenter registry. METHODS: This registry-based, multicenter study retrospectively evaluated PVGI that developed after infrainguinal revascularization performed with a heparin-bonded expanded polytetrafluoroethylene graft that was used in 1400 interventions between 2002 and 2016. A prosthetic graft with infection was defined as direct involvement of the graft with positive bacterial cultures of graft or perigraft material, intraoperative gross purulence or failure of graft incorporation,

Editor's Choice - Treatment of Aortic Prosthesis Infections by Graft Removal and In Situ Replacement with Autologous Femoral Veins and Fascial Strengthening.

INTRODUCTION: Aortic prosthetic graft infection (AGI) is a major challenge in vascular surgery. Eradicating the infection requires prosthetic material removal, debridement, and lower limb revascularization. For the past 15 years, we have used femoral veins for aorto-iliac reconstruction and tensor fascia lata to strengthen the upper anastomosis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this single institution retrospective study is to present results regarding in situ replacement of infected aortic grafts with autologous femoral veins (FVs). METHODS: From October 2000 to March 2013, patients treated for AG

Is there a future for hinged prostheses in primary total knee arthroplasty? A 20-year survivorship analysis of the Blauth prosthesis.

The Blauth prosthesis is a hinged total knee replacement. We have evaluated 422 consecutive primary total knee arthroplasties using this design in 330 patients with a maximum follow-up of 20 years (mean 6). The mean age of the patients at the time of operation was 70 years (29 to 87). Using endpoints of infection, removal because of aseptic loosening, removal for any cause, and the worst case as definitions of failure, the cumulative rates of survival at 20 years were 93.6%, 96.0%, 94.4% and 86.8%, respectively. The cumulative rate of survival of the patients themselves was 14.4% (24% in patie

Megaprosthetic replacement in complex distal humerus fractures in elderly patients: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Managing distal humeral fractures can be challenging for orthopedic surgeons. There are several treatment options for managing this type of fracture, and the treatment method for these fractures should be based on patient-related factors. In elderly patients with osteoporotic bone and severe comminution of the fracture, adequate fixation can be a major challenge for surgeons. The use of megaprosthesis has been recently proposed in traumatology as an alternative to osteosynthesis or conventional prosthesis for the management of comminuted articular fractures in elderly patients with

Prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus Infections in the Implantation of Orthopedic Devices in a Third-Level Hospital: An Observational Cohort Study.

Using orthopedic devices or prosthetic joints to treat various conditions is expected in a Traumatology and Orthopedics Unit. Recently, the materials used to build these different devices have evolved; however, pathogens can still infect these materials. Additionally, the immune system has limitations when defending against these pathogens, which results in bacterial infections like Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A total of 276 patients who attended the Traumatology and Orthopedics Unit of our

Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Musculoskeletal Infection Cases from a Tertiary Referral Center, Colorado, USA.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria represent an uncommon but important cause of infection of the musculoskeletal system. Such infections require aggressive medical and surgical treatment, and cases are often complicated by delayed diagnosis. We retrospectively reviewed all 14 nonspinal cases of nontuberculous mycobacterial musculoskeletal infections treated over 6 years by orthopedic surgeons at a university-affiliated tertiary referral center. All patients required multiple antimicrobial agents along with aggressive surgical treatment; 13 of 14 patients ultimately achieved cure. Four patients requir

[Bacterial biofilms].

Today, 65 % of all infections are regarded as a consequence of local biofilms. In Otorhinolaryngology frequent diseases including chronic tonsillitis, chronic sinusitis, otitis media with effusion and cholesteatomas fulfill the clinical criteria of biofilm-associated diseases such as recalcitrant disease, inefficiently treated with long-term antibiotics. Apart from affecting a great proportion of our clinical spectrum, ENT-specialist frequently insert implants into ventilated area such as trachea, middle ear and paranasal sinuses, all susceptible for biofilm attachment. In short, relevant char
