Dual Sensory Impairment and Perceived Everyday Discrimination in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: Perceived everyday discrimination is a psychosocial stressor linked to adverse health outcomes, including mortality. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), and dual sensory impairments (DSI) with everyday discrimination. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional analysis of the Health and Retirement Study 2006 and 2008 surveys, a US population-based survey that included noninstitutionalized adults 51 years and older. Analyses were weighted to account for complex sample design and differential nonresponse. Data were analyz…

Computed Tomographic Evaluation of the Sacroiliac Joints of Young Working Labrador Retrievers of Various Work Status Groups: Detected Lesions Vary Among the Different Groups and Finite Element Analyses of the Static Pelvis Yields Repeatable Measures of Sacroiliac Ligament Joint Strain.

Musculoskeletal injuries can lead to a working dog being withdrawn from service prior to retirement. During training exercises, young working dogs are often required to perform repetitive tasks, including adoption of an upright posture (or "hupp" task). Non-invasive, quantitative methods would be helpful for supporting research on effects of these repetitive tasks on sacroiliac joints (SIJ). Furthering our understanding of lesions in and biomechanical stresses on the SIJ could provide insight into possible training modifications for minimizing risks of SIJ injury. Aims of this retrospective, s…

Social isolation in chronic kidney disease and the role of mobility limitation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with multiple comorbidities, hospitalizations and mortality. In older adults, social isolation and poor mobility contribute to these outcomes. We tested the hypothesis that a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) <45 mL/min/1.73 m2 (CKD Stages 3b-5) is associated with social isolation and that mobility limitation is a key driver of social isolation in patients with CKD. METHODS: Data from 9119 participants, ages 57-107 years, from the 2016 wave of the Health and Retirement Study's Venous Blood Study were used for this cross-sectional analysis.…

Self-Selected and Maximal Walking Speeds Provide Greater Insight Into Fall Status Than Walking Speed Reserve Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the degree to which self-selected walking speed (SSWS), maximal walking speed (MWS), and walking speed reserve (WSR) are associated with fall status among community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN: WS and 1-year falls history data were collected on 217 community-dwelling older adults (median age = 82, range 65-93 years) at a local outpatient PT clinic and local retirement communities and senior centers. WSR was calculated as a difference (WSRdiff = MWS - SSWS) and ratio (WSRratio = MWS/SSWS). RESULTS: SSWS (P < 0.001), MWS (P < 0.001), and WSRdiff (P < 0.01) were associ…

Psychosocial job conditions, fear avoidance beliefs and expected return to work following acute coronary syndrome: a cross-sectional study of fear-avoidance as a potential mediator.

BACKGROUND: Despite improvements in treatment, acute coronary syndrome remains a substantial cause for prolonged sick absences and premature retirement. Knowledge regarding what benefits return to work is limited, especially the effect of psychological processes and psychosocial work factors. The purposes of this cross-sectional study were two-fold: to examine associations between adverse psychosocial job conditions and fear-avoidance beliefs towards work, and to determine whether such beliefs mediated the relationship between work conditions and expected return to work in acute coronary syndr…

Noise exposure and hypertension: investigation of a silent relationship.

BACKGROUND: Noise is an important occupational hazard worldwide and hypertension a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is currently the greatest cause of disability retirement worldwide. The association between noise exposure and auditory effects is well documented in the biomedical literature, but the same is not true about exposure to different levels of noise and extra-auditory effects. It has been shown that noise exposure levels to be considered for non-auditory effects may not be the same as in the case of auditory effects. The frequent presence of noise in workplace…

Estrogen replacement therapy in the elderly.

A woman spends about one-third of her life in her postmenopausal years. Some women supplement this period of decreased estrogen production with estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Since the 1970s, we have evaluated the long-term risks and benefits of ERT in one population of women, the Leisure World retirement community. ERT is the most effective method for preventing osteoporotic bone loss and fractures in postmenopausal women. In Leisure World, ERT reduced the risk of hip fractures about 50 %. The effect is greatest in long-term users but may be lost after discontinuation. Postmenopausal ost…
