Contemporary studies of self-healing polymer composites are based on microcapsules synthesized using synthetic and toxic polymers, biopolymers, etc. via methods such as in situ polymerization, electrospraying, and air atomization. Herein, we synthesized a healing agent, epoxy (EPX) encapsulated calcium carbonate (CC) microcapsules, which was used to prepare self-healing EPX composites as a protective coating for metals. The CC microcapsules were synthesized using two facile methods, namely, the soft-template method (STM) and the in situ emulsion method (EM). Microcapsules prepared using the ST

Monomers of (tetrazol-5-yl)-acetic acid (TAA) were obtained by sublimation of the crystalline compound and the resulting vapors were isolated in cryogenic nitrogen matrices at 13 K. The conformational and tautomeric composition of TAA in the matrix was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and vibrational calculations carried out at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. TAA may adopt two tautomeric modifications, 1H- and 2H-, depending on the position of the annular hydrogen atom. Two-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) of TAA were theoretically calculated at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level, fo

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) establish direct communication pathways between the brain and external devices. Leveraging the unique neuroplasticity of the developing brain, BCIs have emerged as a novel rehabilitative technology for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and perinatal brain injury. This review comprehensively examines five major BCI paradigms-P300, motor imagery (MI), steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and

BACKGROUND: Precise monitoring of training intensity in rowing requires indicators capturing both systemic and local physiological responses. Muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2), measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), reflects local muscular oxygen utilization and may complement traditional systemic indicators such as heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (V̇O2), and mechanical power output (P). This study aimed to investigate SmO2 dynamics in upper- (biceps brachii, BB) and lower-limb (vastus lateralis, VL) muscles during incremental exercise, representative training sessions, and a 2000 m rowin

BACKGROUND: The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a central role in executive functions, particularly during cognitive conflict tasks. Sour taste is a salient oral sensory stimulus and may be associated with changes in behavioral performance and prefrontal activation during cognitive tasks. This study examined whether simultaneous sour taste stimulation was associated with behavioral and prefrontal hemodynamic changes during Stroop task performance in healthy adults using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
METHODS: Twenty-six right-handed healthy adults were randomly assigned to eithe

BACKGROUND: Many people experience balance problems after a stroke. It remains unclear how a short Tai Chi Cloud Hands programme affects resting-state connectivity within the prefrontal-motor network.
METHODS: This study included 52 inpatients with post-stroke balance problems. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either standard rehabilitation alone or standard rehabilitation plus Tai Chi Cloud Hands. Both groups completed 30 min of rehabilitation per day, 5 days per week, for 2 weeks. Additionally, the experimental group completed 30 min of Cloud Hands training daily for 2 weeks.

BACKGROUND: Wearable sensors are a promising method for collecting clinical trial outcome data for people with Angelman syndrome (AS). However, there has yet to be a systematic probe into the ways in which wearable sensors have been successfully used in AS. The current study aims to provide a quantitative summary of wearable sensors used in AS, including contexts of use and psychometric properties, and to present key narrative highlights.
METHOD: Literature searches were performed in three electronic databases: APA PsycInfo, PubMed and Web of Science Core Collection. Data items were categoriz

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is the most common etiological cause of low back pain (LBP). Objective and precise pain evaluation is of significant clinical value. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a noninvasive neuroimaging modality, has been increasingly validated to reflect subjective pain perception through hemodynamic correlates. This study aimed to analyze the fNIRS changes in patients with LDH about to receive Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy and to further explore the feasibility of fNIRS as an objective biomarkers for clinical assessment of LDH.
METHODS: Resting

While some anatomical brain asymmetries are seen across primates, the earlier appearance and larger depth of the right superior temporal sulcus (STS) is specific to human foetuses. Interestingly, the degree of STS asymmetry varies between foetuses, and it has been shown that this interindividual variability is related to the functional lateralization of the language network in school-aged children. It remains unclear, however, whether it is also indicative of language localization and functioning shortly after birth. In the present longitudinal study, we prospectively examined the predictive v

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have demonstrated that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an emerging approach for stroke rehabilitation and numerous studies have shown that VNS can promote motor function recovery and alleviate neurological deficits both in clinical and animal models. However, current clinical applications primarily involve invasive or unilateral stimulation with limited sample sizes and a focus mainly on upper limb function. Recent evidence indicates that bilateral transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (BtaVNS) may offer superior signal conduction and therapeutic outc

INTRODUCTION: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic, disabling condition characterised by post-exertional malaise (PEM), autonomic dysfunction and markedly reduced quality of life. Its prevalence has increased following the COVID-19 pandemic, yet no effective disease-modifying treatments are available and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Evidence implicates immune-metabolic dysregulation, impaired energy metabolism, vascular dysfunction and altered oxygen handling. Intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia treatment (IHHT) is a non-pharmacological intervention prop

BACKGROUND: Some countries have experienced and may continue to experience severe devastation due to wars, epidemics, earthquakes, and other natural catastrophes. When individuals are exposed to specific psychological or physical traumas, they can develop stress-related disorders, which can lead to irreversible changes in the autonomic nervous system and the development of cardiovascular disorders. When subjected to a new stress test, traumatized participants or those previously exposed to trauma may show more pronounced behavioral changes, intolerance, and greater fatigue responses than befor

SIGNIFICANCE: Disorders of consciousness (DOCs) pose significant challenges for therapeutic intervention. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has emerged as a promising neuromodulation technique for treating DOC patients. However, the selection of optimal SCS stimulation parameters, particularly intensity, lacks objective standards, and considerable variations in the configuration of stimulation intensity are evident among different research groups in previous studies.
AIM: We aim to systematically evaluate the effects of different stimulation intensities of SCS using functional near-infrared spect
