Implementing medical abortion through telemedicine in Colombia: a qualitative study.

The non-governmental organisation Profamilia developed and implemented medical abortion through telemedicine in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. This service is now integrated as an alternative to in-person care and available to abortion-seekers across Colombia. Previous research has emphasised bottlenecks in abortion provision, but less is known about implementation processes and experiences. We assessed the feasibility and acceptability of telemedicine for medical abortion from the perspectives of key informants involved in the implementation in Colombia. We conducted 15 in-depth interview

Impact of a pediatric primary care health-coaching program on change in health-related quality of life in children with mental health problems: results of the PrimA-QuO cohort study.

Mental health problems (MHP) have a considerable negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and their families. A low threshold Health Coaching (HC) program has been introduced to bring MH services to primary care and strengthen the role of pediatricians. It comprised training concepts as a hands-on approach for pediatricians, standardization of diagnosis and treatment, and extended consultations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of the HC on HRQoL in children with MHP and their parents. We used data from the PrimA-QuO cohort study conducted

Combination prevention package of interventions for reducing vulnerability to HIV among adolescent girls and young women in Nigeria: An action research.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Nigeria are especially at risk of HIV in Nigeria. Their vulnerability to HIV is linked to multiple concurrent sexual relationships, transgenerational sex, and transactional sex, amongst other factors. These factors have sociocultural contexts that vary across a multi-cultural country like Nigeria. The aim of this study was to use an innovative collaborative approach to develop a minimum HIV prevention package for AGYW which is responsive to sociocultural settings and based on combination HIV prevention. METHODS: We conducted action resear

Treating drug-resistant tuberculosis in an era of shorter regimens: Insights from rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Progressive interventions have recently improved programmatic outcomes in drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) care in South Africa (SA). Amidst these, a shorter regimen was introduced in 2017 with weak evidence, and has shown mixed results. Outcomes still fall short of national targets, and the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has undermined progress to date. OBJECTIVES: To describe the outcomes of participants treated for DR-TB using a shorter, compared with a longer, regimen in a deeply rural SA setting, and to explore other factors affecting these outcomes. METHODS: This retr

Exploring chemical space in non-targeted analysis: a proposed ChemSpace tool.

Non-targeted analysis (NTA) using high-resolution mass spectrometry allows scientists to detect and identify a broad range of compounds in diverse matrices for monitoring exposure and toxicological evaluation without a priori chemical knowledge. NTA methods present an opportunity to describe the constituents of a sample across a multidimensional swath of chemical properties, referred to as "chemical space." Understanding and communicating which region of chemical space is extractable and detectable by an NTA workflow, however, remains challenging and non-standardized. For example, many sample

Failed induction of labor and associated factors in Adama Hospital Medical College, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Failed induction of labor continues to be a public health challenge throughout the world. This failed induction of labor is associated with a higher rate of maternal and fetal morbidity because it increases the unwanted effect of emergency cesarean section. It is also associated with an increased risk of numerous adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes such as uterine rupture, nonreassuring fetal heart rate tracing, postpartum hemorrhage, stillbirth, and severe birth asphyxia. Thus, this study was aimed to assess the failed induction of labor and associated factors in the Adama Hos

Evaluation of an injury prevention programme (Prep-to-Play) in women and girls playing Australian Football: design of a pragmatic, type III, hybrid implementation-effectiveness, stepped-wedge, cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the increase in participation and risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and concussion in women's Australian Football, an injury prevention programme (Prep-to-Play) was codesigned with consumers (eg, coaches, players) and stakeholders (eg, the Australian Football League). The impact of supported and unsupported interventions on the use of Prep-to-Play (primary aim) and injury rates (secondary aim) will be evaluated in women and girls playing community Australian Football. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This stepped-wedge, cluster randomised controlled trial will includ

Efficacy of the SOAR knee health program: protocol for a two-arm stepped-wedge randomized delayed-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee trauma permanently elevates one's risk for knee osteoarthritis. Despite this, people at-risk of post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis rarely seek or receive care, and accessible and efficacious interventions to promote knee health after injury are lacking. Exercise can ameliorate some mechanisms and independent risk factors for osteoarthritis and, education and action-planning improve adherence to exercise and promote healthy behaviours. METHODS: To assess the efficacy of a virtually-delivered, physiotherapist-guided exercise-based program (SOAR) to improve knee health in person

First-line virologic-based ART treatment failure and associated factors among adult HIV Positives in Southwest Shoa, Central Ethiopia.

Background: The function of antiretroviral therapy is to enhance immunity and prevent the occurrence of opportunistic infection. But antiretroviral therapy showed a failure to manage infection after a time. Nowadays, an accepted criterion to confirm Antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment failure is a virologic failure. Regarding this virologic failure, there are no well-addressed findings, especially in this study area. Therefore in this research, the magnitude and factors that contribute for virological ART treatment failure have been identified. Methods: Facilitybased cross-sectional study w

Effectiveness of Iodophor vs Chlorhexidine Solutions for Surgical Site Infections and Unplanned Reoperations for Patients Who Underwent Fracture Repair: The PREP-IT Master Protocol.

IMPORTANCE: The risk of developing a surgical site infection after extremity fracture repair is nearly 5 times greater than in most elective orthopedic surgical procedures. For all surgical procedures, it is standard practice to prepare the operative site with an antiseptic solution; however, there is limited evidence to guide the choice of solution used for orthopedic fracture repair. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of iodophor vs chlorhexidine solutions to reduce surgical site infections and unplanned fracture-related reoperations for patients who underwent fracture repair. Systems, supplies, and staff: a mixed-methods study of health care workers' experiences and health facility preparedness during a large national cholera outbreak, Kenya 2015.

BACKGROUND: From December 2014 to September 2016, a cholera outbreak in Kenya, the largest since 2010, caused 16,840 reported cases and 256 deaths. The outbreak affected 30 of Kenya's 47 counties and occurred shortly after the decentralization of many healthcare services to the county level. This mixed-methods study, conducted June-July 2015, assessed cholera preparedness in Homa Bay, Nairobi, and Mombasa counties and explored clinic- and community-based health care workers' (HCW) experiences during outbreak response. METHODS: Counties were selected based on cumulative cholera burden and geog

Advocating for efforts to protect African children, families, and communities from the threat of infectious diseases: report of the First International African Vaccinology Conference.

One means of improving healthcare workers' knowledge of and attitudes to vaccines is through running vaccine conferences which are accessible, affordable, and relevant to their everyday work. Various vaccinology conferences are held each year worldwide. These meetings focus heavily on basic science with much discussion about new developments in vaccines, and relatively little coverage of policy, advocacy, and communication issues. A negligible proportion of delegates at these conferences come from Africa, home to almost 40% of the global burden of vaccine-preventable diseases. To the best of o

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for patellofemoral pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain syndrome, now generally referred to as patellofemoral pain (PFP), is one of the most common orthopaedic disorders, characterised by pain in the anterior or retropatellar knee region. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proposed generally as a complementary treatment, associated with other interventions such as exercise, or as a single treatment to increase muscle force, reduce knee pain, and improve function. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for people with patellofemoral pain. SEAR
