Susceptibility mapping of visceral leishmaniasis based on fuzzy modelling and group decision-making methods.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease, highly influenced by environmental factors, which is an increasing public health problem in Iran, especially in the north-western part of the country. A geographical information system was used to extract data and map environmental variables for all villages in the districts of Kalaybar and Ahar in the province of East Azerbaijan. An attempt to predict VL prevalence based on an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) module combined with ordered weighted averaging (OWA) with fuzzy quantifiers indicated that the south-eastern part of Ahar is par

Responses of small intestinal architecture and function over time to environmental factors in a tropical population.

To determine the response of the small intestinal mucosa to environmental conditions, we studied changes in mucosal architecture and function in a longitudinal cohort study in African adults. Over three consecutive years, 238 adults submitted monthly stool samples for parasitologic and bacteriologic analysis and underwent an annual endoscopic jejunal biopsy for mucosal morphometry. Absorption and permeability assays were performed on the same day as the enteroscopy. Variation in mucosal architecture and function was correlated with environmental factors and stool microbiology. The whole cohort

Energy, volatile production, and climatic effects of the Chicxulub Cretaceous/Tertiary impact.

A comprehensive analysis of volatiles in the Chicxulub impact strongly supports the hypothesis that impact-generated sulfate aerosols caused over a decade of global cooling, acid rain, and disruption of ocean circulation, which contributed to the mass extinction at the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary. The crater size, meteoritic content of the K/T boundary clay, and impact models indicate that the Chicxulub crater was formed by a short period comet or an asteroid impact that released 0.7-3.4 x 10(31) ergs of energy. Impact models and experiments combined with estimates of volatiles in the p

Emerging investigator series: spatially and temporally resolved lightning NOx production rates obtained with space-based lightning detectors.

Lightning is a dominant free tropospheric source of nitrogen oxides (NOx), impacting climate by affecting global tropospheric ozone (O3) and other key oxidants. We calculate temporally and spatially resolved lightning NOx (LNOx) production rates using lightning flash energies from space-based Lightning Imaging Sensors (LIS). Our production rates average ∼309 moles per flash (mol fl-1) over oceans, peaking at midday, and ∼172 mol fl-1 over land, peaking in the early morning. Replacing static values in the original GEOS-Chem model inventory with our spatially and hourly varying production rates

Rubisco limits plant breeding: can biodiversity unlock it?

Photosynthesis has been underestimated as a breeding target. A workflow that identifies or engineers superior Rubisco variants and introduces them into crops is urgently needed. Photosynthesis is the foundation of life on Earth, yet it remains inefficient in crop plants. At the heart of this lies Rubisco, the most abundant enzyme on Earth and the primary bottleneck in carbon fixation. Despite its central role in determining photosynthetic capacity and crop yield, efforts to improve it have been constrained by three persistent blind spots: an overreliance on model species, inadequate screening

Ambient temperature and occupational injury risk in US surface mining: A nationwide case-crossover analysis (2005-2025).

The temperature-injury exposure-response relationship in US mining remains uncharacterised using distributed-lag methods. A time-stratified case-crossover cohort was assembled of 106,838 injuries reported to the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (2005-2025) at 9833 surface mines. Daily maximum temperature and dewpoint came from 4-km gridded climate data. A conditional-logistic distributed-lag nonlinear model was fit over lags 0-7, adjusted for dewpoint, precipitation and holidays. Relative to a minimum-morbidity temperature of 12.2 °C, risk was elevated at the 95th heat percentile (35.0

Time-series analysis of the incidence trend of heat stress-related disorders in a hot and humid climate in a process industry.

Global warming is escalating occupational health risks worldwide, with outdoor workers in hot and humid regions facing disproportionate exposure to extreme heat. In such climates, the synergistic effects of high temperature and humidity critically impair thermoregulation, increasing susceptibility to heat stress-related disorders (HSRDs) a growing concern in low- and middle-income countries where adaptive capacity is limited. This study analyzed the six-year trend (2018-2023) in the HSRDs among outdoor workers in a hot, humid petrochemical industry in southern Iran. This retrospective longitud

Externally validated delay-embedded dynamic mode decomposition and annual-frequency SPOD reveal robust state-level dengue timing organization in Brazil.

We evaluated delay-embedded dynamic mode decomposition (Hankel DMD) as a signal-diagnostic framework for annual dengue timing across Brazil. Weekly InfoDengue estimates were aggregated into 27 state-level incidence trajectories for 2015-2024. The primary model used state-standardized log1p incidence, a 26-week delay embedding, and rank 12. Annual structure was extracted with Hankel DMD, corroborated by annual-frequency spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD), and related to official OpenDataSUS epidemic onset in a state-year model adjusted for preseason climate, serotype information, a

Statistical downscaling of coarse-resolution fine particulate matter predictions over the contiguous United States: model development, evaluation, and implication in health impact assessment.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) predictions at a high spatial resolution (i.e., neighborhood scale) are critically needed to better understand the health impacts of air pollution, especially at neighborhood scales. This work develops a statistical downscaling approach to predict PM2.5 at a 1-km grid resolution over the contiguous United States (CONUS) under baseline and future energy transition scenarios and estimate health benefits utilizing the Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program (BenMAP). To this end, we incorporate the satellite-based high-resolution aerosol optical depth (

Global landscape fire-sourced ambient benzene and health risks in different future scenarios.

Landscape fire (wildfire) has a detrimental impact on air quality and human health. However, the contribution of wildfire emissions to ambient benzene concentrations under future climate scenarios remains unknown. To effectively mitigate the adverse effects of wildfire, it is crucial to accurately capture the spatiotemporal trends of wildfire-related ambient benzene and its health impacts. In this study, the GEOS-Chem model was applied to simulate ambient fire-sourced benzene concentrations for 2015-2019 and 2045-2049 across four scenarios. Overall, global observed ambient benzene concentratio

The Central Role of GSNOR: Decoding Nitric Oxide Signaling for Crop Stress Tolerance.

S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) reductase (GSNOR) is a major and conserved enzyme in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It reduces a stable nitric oxide (NO) reservoir, GSNO, to balance the organisms' redox status through S-nitrosylation. Over the last few decades, much of our understanding of GSNOR's roles in plant biology has been updated. Here, therefore, we review the current knowledge of GSNOR in plant physiology and signaling under abiotic and biotic stresses. We observe that the role of GSNOR in plant abiotic stress is widely studied in both model and crop plants, whereas studies on its role in bi
