OBJECTIVE: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) receptor, scavenger receptor class B, type I (SR-BI), mediated cellular uptake of lipoprotein cholesterol controls HDL structure and plasma HDL and biliary cholesterol levels. In SR-BI knockout (KO) mice, an unusually high plasma unesterified-to-total cholesterol ratio (UC:TC) and abnormally large HDL particles apparently contribute to pathology, including female infertility, susceptibility to atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, and anemia. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of aqueous extract of Ocimum basilicum L (OBL) on platelet aggregation and experimental thrombus.
METHODS: Platelet aggregation induced by ADP (5 muM) and thrombin (4 UI), and thrombus weight in an arteriovenous thrombosis (AVT) model were tested after 2 weeks treatment with 15, 75 and 375 mg/kg OBL orally in rats, compared to 8.8 mg/kg/day aspirin. AVT was also tested 2 h after 75 mg/kg OBL orally, after 3 and 7 days treatment, and one, three and seven days after the end of a two-week treatment. Analysis was done by ANOVA followed by protected t-tests (Tukey).

The membrane permeability transition (MPT) induced by Ca2+ and Pi or Asi was studied in rat kidney mitochondria. Membrane potential, Ca2+ transport and swelling were used to monitor the MPT. ATP (1 microM-1 mM) increased the intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in rat submandibular ductal cells. We have previously demonstrated that the Na(+)-K+ pump on the basolateral membrane of the rabbit cortical collecting duct can function in the K+/K+ exchange mode. Increasing intracellular phosphate in red blood cells inhibits the Na+ pump and increases K+/K+ exchange. We found that maneuvers designed to increase intracellular phosphate in collecting duct cells caused an increase in K+/K+ exchange. HPLC-EPR analyses of the reaction mixtures of microsomal suspensions incubated with ADP, ferric chloride, NADPH and alpha-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) were performed. In the elution pattern of the reaction mixture, three peaks (peaks 1, 2 and 3) were detected.
