Relationships among clinical measures of periodontal disease and their associations with systemic markers.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations of the relationship between periodontitis and systemic disease require that periodontal disease also must be thought of as a disease process that is an exposure for a systemic disease or condition (outcome), rather than as the outcome itself. When viewing periodontal disease as an exposure, investigators must consider the clinical, microbiological, and inflammatory components of periodontitis that potentially convey risk for the systemic outcome of interest, which may or may not be the same as those associated with the assessments used to define tooth-based di

The interproximal height of bone: a guidepost to predictable aesthetic strategies and soft tissue contours in anterior tooth replacement.

Enhanced aesthetic objectives can be achieved with precision and predictability due to recent advances in restorative materials and procedures. Although these developments have expanded the therapeutic options available to practitioners and their patients, anterior hard and soft tissue deformities in the aesthetic zone continue to represent a significant technical challenge to the reconstructive team. The objective of this article is to present diagnostic and prognostic criteria that emphasize the osseous-gingival relationship as a means to achieve predictable aesthetic results in the anterior

Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms in MMP3, TIMP1, and MTR Genes are Associated With Delayed Deciduous Tooth Eruption.

To analyze whether the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Matrix metalloproteinases 2, 3, and 9 (MMP2, MMP3, and MMP9), Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases 1 and 2 (TIMP1 and TIMP2), methionine synthase (MTR) and methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) influence delayed deciduous tooth eruption (DDTE). This cross-sectional study included 1060 biologic unrelated children (aged between 6 and 36 months) of both sexes, selected from 25 public schools in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Oral examination was conducted and DDTE was defined by the absence of gingival eruption according to

Unique Dermatological and Systemic Manifestations in a Classic Pediatric Case of Kindler Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Kindler Syndrome (KS) is a rare, autosomal recessive genodermatosis caused by mutations in the FERMT1 gene, leading to skin fragility, blistering, photosensitivity, and progressive poikiloderma. We present a unique case of KS in a 6-year-old boy born to consanguineous parents, exhibiting uncommon dermatological, and systemic features. The patient developed multiple erythematous plaques, hemorrhagic crusting, and purulent discharge after birth, with a family history suggesting genetic predisposition. Uniquely, the patient presented with well-demarcated hyperpigmented macules on the abdomen, a f

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 2: A rare cause of severe periodontitis in adolescents-A case study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) and platelet storage pool deficiency. The HPS-2 subtype is distinguished by neutropenia, and little is known about its periodontal phenotype in adolescents. AP3B1 is the causative gene for HPS-2. A 13-year-old Chinese girl presented to our department suffering from gingival bleeding and tooth mobility. Her dental history was otherwise unremarkable. Suspecting some systemic diseases as the underlying cause, the patient was referred for medical consultation, a se

Enamel Renal Syndrome: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Enamel renal syndrome (ERS) (OMIM 204690) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta, failed tooth eruption, intrapulpal calcifications, gingival enlargement, and nephrocalcinosis. The rarity of the condition and the variability of the phenotype has led to ERS not being fully characterized. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to account for the range and current state of knowledge on ERS and synthesize these findings into a comprehensive summary, focusing on the pathophysiology, genotype-phenotype correlations, and patient managemen

Iatrogenic orthodontic dental trauma: a case report.

Iatrogenic trauma can be defined as any adverse condition in a patient resulting from treatment by a physician or dentist. Orthodontic treatment carries with it the risks of tissue damage and treatment failure. The aim of this article is to present traumatic oral tissue lesions resulting from iatrogenic orthodontic origin with a 2-year follow-up period based on orthodontic intervention followed by periodontal surgery. The management of traumatic injuries is dependent on the severity of the involvement of the periodontal tissues. While, in most cases, the elimination of the offending agent and

Conservative treatment of periodontal recessions with class V-defects using gingiva-shaded composite--A systematic treatment concept.

UNLABELLED: Periodontal recessions can cause aesthetic and functional problems, especially in the anterior region or when combined with exposed crown margins. A combination of periodontal disease, recession with exposed root surface, hard-tissue defects and age emphasizes the need for treating these defects. If crown margins are exposed and surgical treatment is not possible, aesthetics and function can only be improved by replacement of the restoration. The restorative treatment option with a gingiva-shaded composite is especially valuable for dental fear patients or older patients with gener

Periodontal biotype influence on the volume maintenance of onlay grafts.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous osseous transplants have advantages, including the maintenance of bone density and high concentrations of growth factors. Little is known about the potential long-term influence of periodontal biotype on the volume maintenance of block grafts. METHODS: Forty patients who received autogenous block transplants prior to implant placement were included in the study. Digital photographs and periapical radiographs were taken after restoration. Clinical parameters, including bleeding on probing, mobility, suppuration, mucosal recession, and buccal tissue transparency, were rec

Evidenced-based review of clinical studies on periodontics.

Periodontal diseases have several implications for the practice of endodontics. First, advanced periodontitis often has direct implications for the long-term prognosis of the case and requires careful evaluation and coordinated treatment of both the periodontic and endodontic diseases. Second, the potential for functional interactions between odontogenic pathoses and marginal periodontitis requires careful collection of clinical observations and monitoring the outcome of various treatments. In this section, we provide an analysis of recent clinical studies in this area.
