The exposure of non-target wildlife to anticoagulant compounds used for rodent control is a well-known phenomenon. Exposure can be primary when non-target species consume bait or secondary via uptake of poisoned animals by mammalian and avian predators. However, nothing is known about the exposure patterns in passerine birds that are commonly present on farms where rodent control is conducted. We used liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to screen for residues of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in liver tissue of passerine birds that were present during rodent control w

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are widely used pesticides to control rodent populations. Bromadiolone, a second generation anticoagulant rodenticide (SGARs), is authorized in France to control the population of water voles (Arvicola scherman). The persistence of SGARs in rodents is responsible for secondary exposure or poisoning of predators and scavengers, and is of ecological concern for the conservation of endangered species. Commercial formulations are a mixture of two diastereoisomers of bromadiolone: 70-90% is trans-bromadiolone and 10-30% is cis-bromadiolone. Both diastereoisomers hav

Secondary toxcity of difethialone to Barn owl (Tyto alba) has been investigated. Difethialone was fed to owls for successive periods of 1 (phase 1), 3 (phase 2) and 6 (phase 3) days via-rodenticide dosed rats. The owls survived after the treament of rodenticide on phase 1 and phase 2 experiments but they died during phase 3 experiment. The results suggest that the difethialone could cause more secondary toxicity to owls.

The "superwarfarin" compounds are 4-hydroxy derivatives of coumarin that have increased activity and a longer duration of action than the parent compound. The superwarfarins are used widely in the United States as rodenticides and are effective against warfarin-resistant strains of rats. A chronic accidental ingestion of one of these products, brodifacoum, by a 7-year-old child who had bleeding and laboratory evidence suggestive of a vitamin K-related coagulopathy is reported. The bleeding manifestations were severe and prolonged, requiring 13 months for normalization of coagulation times. Wit

Superwarfarins consist of two classes of compounds, the 4-hydroxycoumarins and the indandiones. These compounds have replaced warfarin as an anticoagulant rodenticide. This article is a summary of the clinical effects produced by accidental and deliberate ingestions of superwarfarins. Most accidental ingestions occur in childhood and result in a benign outcome. Deliberate overdoses usually involve repeated ingestions of large quantities of superwarfarins that have resulted in prolonged laboratory evidence of interference with clotting; serious bleeding has been rare. This article suggests an a…

Short laboratory feeding tests were carried out with the anticoagulants warfarin, difenacoum, and brodifacoum on a number of European rodent species: Clethrionomys glareolus, Microtus agrestis, M. arvalis, Apodemus flavicollis, A. sylvaticus, Mus musculus, Rattus rattus and R. norvegicus. It was found that the toxicity to all species was highest with brodifacoum and lowest with warfarin, and that only 0.005% brodifacoum would give a complete mortality in most species after one day's feeding. The potential of this compound for the control of microtine field rodents is suggested.

Bromadiolone, a widely-used rodent control drug, could act as a long-acting anticoagulant. Patients of bromadiolone poisoning often present with multiorgan hemorrhage. However, neurological symptoms of bromadiolone poisoning are seldom reported. We report a rare case with convulsive status epilepticus as the initial presentation of bromadiolone poisoning. A previously healthy 18-year-old man presented with persistent unconsciousness and repeated convulsive seizures. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed lesions in the corpus callosum. Laboratory test revealed the microscopic hematuria, prolonged

A liquid chromatographic method was developed for the analysis of indandione and 4-hydroxycoumarin anticoagulant rodenticides in blood serum and liver. The method enabled the measurement of serum and liver concentrations of eight anticoagulant rodenticides: brodifacoum, bromadiolone, chlorophacinone, coumafuryl, coumatetralyl, diphacinone, difenacoum, and warfarin. Anticoagulants were extracted from serum and liver with acetonitrile. Extracts were applied to solid-phase extraction columns, which contained mixed packings. Column eluates were evaporated to dryness, reconstituted, and subjected t

The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of trapping and subsequent rodenticide baiting for house mouse (Mus musculus) control under field conditions. Three field trials were conducted, with pre- and post-treatment feeding and tracking censuses used to estimate control success. Trapping alone reduced feeding census values by 69% from 159 to 49 g at Site 1, 40% (344 g/208 g) at Site 2, and 58% (194 g/82 g) at Site 3. Tracking censuses confirmed similar reductions (44-67%). Trapping was most effective in the lower infestation levels and where food availability was limited. The cho

Bromadiolone is an anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) commonly used as a plant protection product (PPP) against rodent pests in agricultural lands. ARs can be transferred trophically to predators/scavengers when they consume intoxicated live or dead rodents. ARs exposure in weasels Mustela nivalis, small mustelids specialized on rodent predation, is poorly known in southern Europe. Moreover, in this species there is no information on bioaccumulation of AR diastereomers e.g., cis- and trans-bromadiolone. Trans-bromadiolone is more persistent in the rodent liver and thus, is expected to have a great

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used worldwide to control populations of agricultural and urban rodents, but these pesticides may be accumulated in and poisoned non-target species of wildlife. Slugs may feed on rodenticide bait following field applications. Thus, it can be assumed that their predators are exposed to rodenticides through food chain transfer. However, AR exposure in the slugs has not been systematically studied. We investigated the accumulation of three ARs (chlorophacinone, bromadiolone or brodifacoum) in the slug Deroceras reticulatum exposed for a period of 5days followe

BACKGROUND: Rodenticides are often included as part of an integrated pest management approach for managing pocket gophers (Thomomys spp.) given that they are relatively quick and inexpensive to apply. Strychnine has historically been the most effective toxicant for pocket gophers, but its use is currently limited in the United States; alternative registered toxicants have not proven effective. Recent research with baits containing cholecalciferol plus anticoagulant toxicants proved effective against pocket gophers in a lab setting. Therefore, we established a field study to compare cholecalcif

Anticoagulant rodenticides are widely used in urban areas to control rodent pests and are responsible for secondary poisoning in many nontarget wildlife species. We tested the livers of five coyotes (Canis latrans) in the Denver Metropolitan Area, Colorado, US, for anticoagulant rodenticides. All five livers were positive for brodifacoum, with values ranging from 95 ppb to 320 ppb, and one liver was positive for bromadiolone, with a value of 885 ppb. Both of these rodenticides are second-generation anticoagulants, which are more potent and more likely to cause secondary poisoning than first-ge

Brodifacoum poisoning occurs as a result of ingestion of rodenticide compounds. It acts as a superwarfarin, inhibiting vitamin K epoxide reductase, in an irreversible fashion much like warfarin but with a much longer half-life. A 48-year-old female patient reported 4 days of mild dyspnea, dry cough, bilateral popliteal fossae pain and diffuse upper abdominal pain. She had no history of liver disease or alcohol or illicit substance abuse. Initial physical examination was remarkable only for mildly pale conjunctivae and mild abdominal tenderness and pain in the left popliteal fossa. A complete b

Superwarfarin vitamin K antagonists are found in rat poisons and are readily available. Pediatric exposures are common but are usually asymptomatic without significant coagulopathy. Superwarfarin intoxication must be considered in any adult who presents with an unexplained coagulopathy with extreme elevation of prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time with associated depletion of vitamin K dependent factors. If superwarfarin toxicity is confirmed, intentional ingestion should be considered, as a large quantity of ingested rat poison is necessary to induce a coagulopathy. Patients with
