Penetrating abdominal injuries in children in Nigeria.

This is a report of a retrospective study of 24 children managed for penetrating abdominal injury over 10 years, and it represents 34% of all abdominal injuries in children in that period. Falls onto sharp objects within and around the home were responsible for ten of the injuries, seven were injured by animal horns and four were sporting injuries. Violence and road traffic accidents were uncommon. Most patients (67%) had evisceration of omentum or intestine, and one of these was found at laparotomy to have a jejuno-jejunal intussusception. Seven children had injury to hollow viscera. There we…

[Injuries to the abdominal aorta during laparoscopy].

Member surgeons of the Société de Chirurgie vasculaire de Langue française participated in a survey concerning traumatic injury to the aorta and retrospectively reported nine cases of injury occurring during laparoscopic operations. Six had occurred in 1991 when video-laparoscopic surgery was becoming widespread. The laparoscopy had been indicated as a diagnostic procedure in 4 cases and for curative treatment in 5. Gynaecology disease were involved in 4 cases and digestive diseases in 5. Injury was reported near the aortic bifurcation or at the origin of the common right iliac artery. Concomi

Obturator nerve injuries during intra-abdominal surgery.

Selective obturatory nerve lesions are described to occur relatively infrequent. In the present paper two patients developing signs and symptoms of an obturatory neuropathy as a result of abdominal surgery were reported. In a 48-year-old woman a bilateral obturator neuropathy occurred after bilateral ovarectomy with a weakness of the adductor muscles, typical electromyographic findings and sensory deficits in the medial aspect of the thigh. Similar unilateral signs and symptoms were seen in a 65-years-old man as a result of an aortofemoral bypass operation. Symptomatology and differential diag

Traumatic abdominal wall injuries in postmortem CT.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) is a rare manifestation of blunt trauma, usually linked to high-energy mechanisms such as motor vehicle collisions. While uncommon in clinical series, its true frequency in fatal trauma is poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the incidence of TAWH in postmortem computed tomography (pmCT) of traffic fatalities and to evaluate associated injury patterns, with particular focus on motor vehicle occupants (MVO). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed traffic fatalities between January 2011 and July 2023 at a single forensic institute. Of

Predictors of abdominal injuries in blunt trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of abdominal injuries in victims of blunt trauma. METHOD: retrospective analysis of trauma protocols (collected prospectively) of adult victims of blunt trauma in a period of 15 months. Variables were compared between patients with abdominal injuries (AIS>0) detected by computed tomography or/and laparotomy (group I) and others (AIS=0, group II). Student's t, Fisher and qui-square tests were used for statistical analysis, considering p<0.05 as significant. RESULTS: A total of 3783 cases were included, with a mean age of 39.1 ± 17.7 years (14-99), 76.1% being…

[Grading and prognosis of blunt abdominal injuries].

From 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1987, 297 patients were admitted to Ullevål Hospital, Dept. of Surgery, with abdominal injury after blunt trauma. The Injury Severity Score (ISS) was determined in retrospect, and correlated to mortality, morbidity and use of resources. 50 patients (16.8%) died. Mortality increased with increasing ISS, until ISS was above 34. In this group, mortality was 75%. In the survivors, hospital costs (days in the hospital, in the intensive care unit, on mechanical respiration, and number of blood units transfused) increased with increasing ISS. The likelihood of devel

Limb and abdominal injuries: principles of treatment.

In the period reviewed, the Royal Victoria Hospital received over 7000 casualties, representing approximately half of the civil disturbance injuries for the province. Primary resuscitation did not differ from that of road traffic accidents, but the surgical management did. Extensive débridement was essential, followed by delayed primary suture some days later. Two hundred and nine penetrating abdominal wounds were reviewed, and the necessity of exploring the abdomen in all such injuries is emphasized.

[Treatment of pancreatic injuries after blunt abdominal trauma].

Pancreatic injuries resulting from blunt abdominal trauma are uncommon but carry a high risk of morbidity and mortality for patients. Prompt diagnosis and management are critical to optimize patient outcomes. This review article provides an overview of the different types of pancreatic injuries and the various management strategies available, based on the severity of the injury. In unstable patients with a positive focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST), immediate trauma laparotomy is required. Stable patients should be assessed with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) ima

Epidemiology and management of abdominal injuries in children.

BACKGROUND: Although more guideline-adherent care has been described in pediatric compared to adult trauma centers, we aimed to provide a more detailed characterization of management and resource utilization of children with intra-abdominal injury (IAI) within pediatric centers. Our primary objective was to describe the epidemiology, diagnostic evaluation, and management of children with IAI across U.S. children's hospitals. Our secondary objective was to describe the interhospital variation in surgical management of children with IAI. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 33 hospi

Traumatic abdominal wall injuries-a primer for radiologists.

Traumatic abdominal wall injuries encompass a broad clinical and radiological spectrum and are identified in approximately 9% of blunt trauma patients. The most severe form of abdominal wall injury-a traumatic abdominal wall hernia-is seen in less than 1.5% of blunt abdominal trauma patients. However, the incidence of concurrent intra-abdominal injuries in these patients is high and can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Although the diagnosis of abdominal wall injuries is typically straight forward on CT, associated injuries may distract the interpreting radiologist in more subtle…
