Chlamydia psittaci: a suspected cause of reproductive loss in three Victorian horses.

Chlamydia psittaci was detected by PCR in the lung and equine foetal membranes of two aborted equine foetuses and one weak foal from two different studs in Victoria, Australia. The abortions occurred in September 2019 in two mares sharing a paddock northeast of Melbourne. The weak foal was born in October 2019 in a similar geographical region and died soon after birth despite receiving veterinary care. The detection of C. psittaci DNA in the lung and equine foetal membranes of the aborted or weak foals and the absence of any other factors that are commonly associated with abortion or neonatal

Seroprevalence study of the main causes of abortion in dairy cattle in Morocco.

Sera from 221 cattle were collected in 25 farms in Morocco to investigate the evidence and circulation of some of the main bovine abortive agents in the dairy cattle farming, where abortions are often reported. All sera were examined for brucellosis, 176 for neosporosis, 88 for leptospirosis, and 42 for Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD/MD), Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) (Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, IBR/IPV), and Bovine Herpesvirus 4 (BHV-4) infections (at least 1 sample per herd). Abortions were reported in 23 (10.4%) of the 221 tested cattle. Antibodies against the investigated pathogens wer

Identification of Bartonella henselae in an aborted equine fetus.

This report describes the characterization of a Bartonella henselae abortion in an equine fetus by gross, histologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and molecular methods. Bartonella henselae can cause cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis, and endocarditis in humans and other animals. The bacterium has been isolated from several mammalian species but only recently from equids; however, it has not been linked to abortion in equids. An aborted equine fetus exhibited necrosis and vasculitis in multiple tissues, with intralesional Gram-negative short-to-spirillar

Klebsiella oxytoca as a cause of equine abortion--short communication.

Klebsiella (K.) oxytoca infection induced the abortion of a female equine fetus in the 10th month of pregnancy. Bacteria were cultured from the liver, lung and stomach content. They were labelled with an anti-Mycobacterium bovis antibody in the thymus, liver and lungs and were stained with Giemsa and Brown-Brenn staining in the thymus and lung. The diffusely consolidated lungs contained numerous grey-whitish foci 2-4 mm in diameter, which corresponded to severe pyogranulomatous pneumonia characterised by numerous intraalveolar neutrophils and macrophages and multinucleated Langhans' giant cell

Mycobacterium avium abortion in a sow.

A 2-year-old sow aborted her entire near-term litter of 11. Gross and histologic examination of a fetus suggested a tuberculous infection, and a yellow-pigmented Mycobacterium avium serotype 1 was subsequently isolated from the fetal tissue. Efforts to rebreed the sow were unsuccessful. She was anergic to skin tests with purified protein derivative of M. avium on two occasions but had M. avium specific in vitro lymphocyte immunostimulation. Gross granulomatous lesions were found in the liver, kidneys, and endometrium when the sow was necropsied 5 months after the abortion. Histologic examinati

Bovine abortion associated with Nocardia farcinica.

Nocardia spp. are recognized as a cause of bovine mastitis, cutaneous or subcutaneous abscesses, pneumonia, and disseminated disease. Abortion caused by Nocardia spp. is uncommon, and only a few sporadic cases have been reported in horses, pigs, and cattle. In all previous reports, of nocardial abortion, the causative agent was identified as Nocardia asteroides. The current report describes an aborted bovine fetus that was infected with Nocardia farcinica. Placenta, abomasal fluid, lung, liver, and kidney specimens from a late-term bovine abortion were submitted to the Kansas State Veterinary

Surgical Management of Foetal Maceration in a Domestic Shorthair Queen.

Foetal maceration is a pregnancy pathology occasionally observed in cats following intrauterine foetal death, characterised by septic decomposition of foetal tissues, resulting in the exposure of foetal bones. This report describes the clinical management of foetal maceration in a cat and scrutinizes the findings with relevant literature to inform practice. A domestic shorthair queen, over 1 year of age and in its third parity, was presented with prolonged gestation, abdominal distension, fetid vaginal discharge, anorexia and general weakness, accompanied by a history of abortion during its fi

Abortion in sows.

Of a total of 31,766 pregnancies 465 abortions were reported, in average 1.46 %. By comparison of the frequency of abortion at different times of the year a significantly higher percentage of abortion was found in sows inseminated during the summer months. No significant difference was found between 68 boars as to the frequency of abortion. In 248 abortions 23 (9.3 %) aborted due to acute erysipelas suis, 5 due to non-infectious diseases, 4 due to spoiled food, but 216 (87.0 %) sows aborted without any previous symptoms.

Devising an indicator to detect mid-term abortions in dairy cattle: a first step towards syndromic surveillance of abortive diseases.

Bovine abortion surveillance is essential for human and animal health because it plays an important role in the early warning of several diseases. Due to the limited sensitivity of traditional surveillance systems, there is a growing interest for the development of syndromic surveillance. Our objective was to assess whether, routinely collected, artificial insemination (AI) data could be used, as part of a syndromic surveillance system, to devise an indicator of mid-term abortions in dairy cattle herds in France. A mid-term abortion incidence rate (MAIR) was computed as the ratio of the number

[Ovine abortion associated with toxoplasmosis: serological, anatomo-pathological and immunohistochemistry characterization].

Ovine toxoplasmosis is a major cause of abortion and placentitis. Lambs with congenital infection are born with encephalitis. Abortions occurred between May and August 2006 in an estate in Três Palmeiras, southern Brazil. This study aimed to assess the frequency of abortion associated with toxoplasmosis among ewes in southern Brazil using indirect hemagglutination and pathoanatomical and immunohistochemical analyses. Blood samples were collected from nine animals for indirect hemagglutination. One fetus underwent necropsy and histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. Three samples, o

Epizootic of Chlamydia psittaci infection in goats in Taiwan.

Epizootic abortion in goats has been frequently reported in Taiwan since 1993. The outbroken flocks were found in most of districts in Taiwan. No apparent clinical signs were found in aborted doe. The typical abortion occurred in the last two months of pregnancy. The incidence of abortion was from 10% to 87% in outbroken farms in 1993, and a total of 976 out of 2130 pregnancies (46%) were found abortion in our investigation. Gross lesions in aborted fetuses included generalized haemorrhage and swollen liver. Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from tissues of aborted fetuses and from vaginal swabs
