Developing a systematic search strategy related to people with disability: A brief report testing the utility of proposed disability search terms in a search about opioid use.

BACKGROUND: The varied use of the term "disability" in the scientific literature makes it challenging to conduct systematic reviews of health issues among people with disability. Utilizing general disability search terms has been suggested as an efficient way to ensure a broad capture of the literature related to disability. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the utility of general disability terms versus condition-specific terms, in the context of systematically searching for articles related to disability and other conditions or issues, in this case, opioid use. METHODS: Systematic searches

AI versus human coding of NIH grant abstracts.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for qualitative analysis in substance use research, yet their performance relative to human coders remains underexplored. This study compares ChatGPT-4.0 with human coders in performing qualitative coding tasks using NIH grant abstracts as a test case, focusing on the identification and description of research innovations. Using a sample of NIH HEAL Initiative grant abstracts related to opioid overdose prevention, a total of 125 abstracts were independently coded by ChatGPT and humans to generate innovation descriptions, which were then evalua

Streamlining the Abstract Selection Process for the American Society of Breast Surgeons' Annual Meeting by Utilizing Large Language Models.

PURPOSE: The American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) receives an increasing number of abstracts for its annual meeting, resulting in increasing time and effort for peer-review. We aimed to compare artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) to human-generated scores to explore if AI-review is a plausible abstract screening process. METHODS: Abstracts published from the 2025 ASBrS meeting were assessed with three LLMs: OpenAI's GPT4-o (GPT), Meta's Llama-3.1-405b (Llama) and DeepSeek's DeepSeek-V3 (DeepSeek). Abstracts were analyzed using zero shot (ZS), which included the 20

Trends in gambling studies research: quantifying, categorizing, and describing citations.

As opportunities to gamble have increased during the 20th century, so has gambling research. This study used new strategies, methods, and technology to examine citation trends and the growth of knowledge in the field of gambling studies. The sample included 2,246 citations that were published between 1903 and 2003. By using multiple keywords to classify each citation into distinct topic areas, this study yielded a more comprehensive analysis than was previously available. The results reveal that gambling-related research has grown at an exponential rate. The most prevalent topics explored with

Empirical formulation of a generic query set for clinical information retrieval systems.

Information needs in clinical practice take the form of specific questions about a given clinical situation, and are best satisfied by concise and specific information retrieval. We sought to develop a comprehensive set of generic queries for information retrieval from electronic medical information resources. We collected one hundred and ten real-world questions asked at the point of care in a variety of settings, and from these developed a set of generic queries of which each of the real-world queries could be shown to be a special case. To provide allowed values for each of the concept term

External cause-of-injury coding in hospital discharge data--United States, 1992.

Accurate and reliable data regarding the external causes of injury (e.g., motor-vehicle crashes and assaults) are critical for planning, implementing, and evaluating injury-control programs (1). In the United States, approximately 25% of the total population is injured annually (2), and nonfatal injuries account for one of every 6 hospital days and 10% of all hospital discharges (3). Although hospital discharge data (HDD) are an important source of information for severe nonfatal injuries (4), external causes of injury have not been routinely reported in HDD, limiting the usefulness of these d

Absolutely relative: how research results are summarized can affect treatment decisions.

PURPOSE: To determine whether alternative methods of presenting a contrast between the same two quantities in descriptions of research results could lead to different treatment decisions by physicians. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We conducted a survey of practicing physicians and of faculty and fellows in training programs in clinical epidemiology and social science research methods. Each questionnaire presented results from a published study of either hypertension or hypercholesterolemia in two different ways: once as the relative change in the outcome rate and once as the absolute change in the o

Auditing description-logic-based medical terminological systems by detecting equivalent concept definitions.

OBJECTIVE: To specify and evaluate a method for auditing medical terminological systems (TSs) based on detecting concepts with equivalent definitions. This method addresses two important problems: redundancy, where the same concept is represented more than once (described by different terms), and underspecification, where different concepts have the same representation and hence appear indistinguishable from each other. DESIGN: The auditing method is applicable for TSs that are or can be represented in a description logic (DL). The method relies on the assumption that concept definitions are

Doublet method for very fast autocoding.

BACKGROUND: Autocoding (or automatic concept indexing) occurs when a software program extracts terms contained within text and maps them to a standard list of concepts contained in a nomenclature. The purpose of autocoding is to provide a way of organizing large documents by the concepts represented in the text. Because textual data accumulates rapidly in biomedical institutions, the computational methods used to autocode text must be very fast. The purpose of this paper is to describe the doublet method, a new algorithm for very fast autocoding. METHODS: An autocoder was written that transfo

Assessment of surveillance for meningococcal disease in New York State, 1991.

Prevention of meningococcal disease relies in part on the prompt treatment of household and other close contacts of cases. New York State requires that all meningococcal disease cases be reported within 24 hours of diagnosis to ensure that chemoprophylaxis is given to all exposed persons. The authors used a capture-recapture method to assess completeness of reporting of meningococcal disease in 1991 by comparing persons reported to the Department of Health surveillance system with patients listed in the New York State computerized hospital discharge data set who had a discharge diagnosis of me

Obstacles encountered in the use of the medical record and cancer registry abstract in breast cancer research.

A historical-prospective study is being conducted to determine whether there is a relationship between obesity and breast cancer recurrence and survival in African-American women. The primary data sources for the study are the medical record and cancer registry abstract. It has been found that data items such as occupation, menopausal status, height, weight, estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor values, stage, tumor size, number of positive nodes, family history of cancer, and tumor status are not always documented. Suggestions for improving documentation of the primary data sources are

Rheumatoid arthritis treated with tocilizumab in two patients with complicated chronic liver disease with portal hypertension.

Erosive, active rheumatoid arthritis inpatients with portal hypertension combining esophageal varices and ascites complicating chronic liver disease poses serious management problems. Current literature does not provide any valid therapeutic management. We report the case of a woman and a man aged 52 and 66 years respectively having this combination of pathologies. Infusions of 4mg/kg of tocilizumab as monotherapy have produced a weaning from corticosteroids, both clinical and structural remission, with particular liver safety satisfactory at 10 and 18 months.
