BACKGROUND/AIM: Chronic atrophic gastritis of the body-fundus with hypo-achlorhydria has been long since considered the precursor of gastric cancer (GC). A study has been made about the histological pattern of the body-fundic mucosa (oxyntic area) in course of preneoplastic lesions (epithelial dysplasia), associated or progressed to gastric cancer, in order to evaluate the real association with chronic atrophic gastritis and, therefore, with a reduced acid secretion.

Mucolipidosis type IV (ML-IV) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease that causes severe neurologic abnormalities. Three patients with the watery diarrhea-hypokalemia-achlorhydria (WDHA) syndrome were studied. All had watery diarrhea, hypokalemia and hypercalcemia. Plasma vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) levels determined by radioimmunoassay were markedly elevated in these patients, indicating that they had VIP-producing tumors. Gastric acid secretory capacity was evaluated in 116 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis by means of the pentagastrin test. Endoscopic gastric mucosal biopsy specimens were obtained from both the body and the antrum in 90 of them. Tissue typing was performed on 25 patients who attended the Royal Victoria Hospital with chronic vulval dystrophy (CVD). Age-matched control groups who had pernicious anaemia only and achlorhydria only were also tissue typed as these conditions had been found more frequently in our patients with CVD. When these three groups were compared with age-matched control groups of blood donors and patients with gynaecological disorders other than CVD, no specific tissue type was found in patients with CVD nor in those with pernicious anaemia or achlorhydria only.
