HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: For 4 months a 37-year-old woman had been treated for Hashimoto thyroiditis with L-thyroxine, at first 25, then 50 micrograms. From the moment the higher dose had been started she experienced weakness, dizzy spells, nausea, vomiting, weight loss and hyperpigmentation. Her blood pressure was reduced to about 80/60 mm Hg.
INVESTIGATION: The cortisol level was 5.4 nmol/l. When adrenocorticotrophic hormone was administered the cortisol level rose inadequately. Serum ACTH was raised to 3993 pg/ml.
TREATMENT AND COURSE: When hydrocortisone was administered (10 mg in

The adrenal gland produces steroid hormones to play essential roles in regulating various physiological processes. Our previous studies showed that knockout of hepatic Surf4 (Surf4LKO) markedly reduced fasting plasma total cholesterol levels in adult mice, including low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Here, we found that plasma cholesterol levels were also dramatically reduced in 4-week-old young mice and non-fasted adult mice. Circulating lipoprotein cholesterol is an important source of the substrate for the production of adrenal steroid hormones. Therefore, we

BACKGROUND: Non-standard hypertrophy of the adrenal cortex is a rare endocrinopathy causing the incidence of hyperandrogenism among women of procreative age. The primary objective of this paper is the specification of the clinical picture and modifications of the concentration of pituitary, ovarian and adrenal hormones in the blood of female patients with the syndrome of non-standard hypertrophy of the adrenal cortex (NPKN).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the Gynaecological Endocrinology Clinic of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice, Poland, 2,353 female patients were hospitalised between 1
