[A 35-year-old man with aggressive periodontitis].

BACKGROUND: Aggressive and necrotic periodontal diseases may occasionally be associated with undiagnosed systemic diseases and immune deficiencies. We present a 35-year-old man with an undiagnosed hypo-gammaglobulinaemia and severe aggressive periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Gingival biopsies and peripheral blood were collected for immunohistochemical and cell culture studies from the patient with aggressive periodontitis, 3 patients with chronic periodontitis and 3 controls. Mast cells and neutrophils were visualised and counted on histological sections. Freshly isolated monocytes were c

Functional gene polymorphisms in aggressive and chronic periodontitis.

There is strong evidence that genetic as well as environmental factors affect the development of periodontitis, and some suggestion that aggressive and chronic forms of the disease share the same genetic predisposition. This study addresses the hypothesis that there are both shared and unique genetic associations in these forms of periodontitis. A sample of 51 patients with aggressive disease, 57 patients with chronic disease, and 100 healthy controls was recruited for this study. Ten functional polymorphisms in 7 candidate genes were genotyped. The results show statistically significant (p <o

Association of interleukin-1 polymorphisms with aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Genetic polymorphisms for interleukin (IL)-1alpha and -1beta have been proposed as potential genetic markers for periodontal diseases. Since the prevalence of these polymorphisms could be race-related, and no data exist about the frequency of these polymorphisms in the Chilean population, the aim of the current study was to investigate the association of the interleukin-1 gene polymorphisms with aggressive periodontitis (AgP). METHODS: Thirty-six patients with AgP, 75 healthy controls, and 75 subjects of unknown periodontal status (reference population) were genotyped for the IL-1

Aggressive periodontitis with supernumerary teeth: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: There are four key studies in the periodontology literature reporting the correlation between supernumerary teeth and aggressive periodontitis. The aim of this study is to detect such a relationship. METHODS: Patients with supernumerary teeth were identified retrospectively from their orthopantomographs and were invited to the periodontology department for intraoral examination. They were then evaluated for aggressive periodontitis. The number of existing teeth, age, family histories, attachment loss, probing depths, and bleeding on probing scores were recorded. RESULTS: Of the 5

Orthodontic treatment in the presence of aggressive periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive periodontitis causes periodontal destruction, with loss of supporting alveolar bone. The common symptom is rapid attachment loss in the first molar and incisor area, in young adults. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to discuss the challenges, implications and the impact of orthodontic treatment in patients affected by severe periodontal problems, specifically aggressive periodontitis. DISCUSSION: In addition to other bacteria, the main pathogen involved in aggressive periodontitis is the Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. However, the susceptibility to the di

C-reactive protein in patients with aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the systemic levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) in peripheral blood samples of patients with aggressive periodontitis during the first twelve months of periodontal treatment, at exactly six month interval measurements, and compare them with clinical periodontal parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients (N = 45) were examined prior to the initiation of periodontal treatment. Patients were divided into two groups GAgP (Generalised form of aggressive periodontitis, N = 23) and group LAgP (Localised form of aggressive per

Inflammatory Response Influences Treatment of Localized Aggressive Periodontitis.

We previously reported a systemic hyperinflammatory response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in children with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP). Additionally, different levels of this response were observed within the LAP group. It is unknown whether this hyperinflammatory response influences the clinical response to periodontal treatment in these children. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of LPS responsiveness present prior to treatment on the clinical response to treatment within the LAP cohort. Prior to treatment, peripheral blood was collected fr

Tooth loss in aggressive periodontitis: a systematic review.

Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is thought to have a faster rate of progression than chronic periodontitis (CP). However, there is a lack of studies systematically investigating disease progression and tooth loss in AgP. A systematic search of the literature was conducted by two independent reviewers for longitudinal studies including patients with AgP (previously known as 'periodontosis', 'juvenile' or 'early-onset' periodontitis) indicating measures of disease progression. Ovid MEDLINE(®) and Embase databases were searched for at least 5-year longitudinal human studies in AgP patients. In tot

Response of chronic and aggressive periodontitis to treatment.

Patients with aggressive periodontitis can be both rewarding and frustrating to treat in clinical practice. Interindividual variation in response to therapy can be widespread, and we do not clearly understand the reasons for this variable response. It is possible that new research into the resolution of inflammation may reveal basic differences between patients with chronic periodontitis and those with aggressive disease. In addition, future research involving modulation of host inflammatory responses may clarify the reasons for the differences in clinical outcomes between patients. We think i

Single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with aggressive periodontitis and severe chronic periodontitis in Japanese.

Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease causing destruction of periodontal tissues. It is a multifactor disease involving genetic factors and oral environmental factors. To determine genetic risk factors associated with aggressive periodontitis or severe chronic periodontitis, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in multiple candidate genes were investigated in Japanese. We studied 134 patients with aggressive periodontitis, 117 patients with severe chronic periodontitis, and 125 healthy volunteers without periodontitis, under case-control setting, and 310 SNPs in 125 candidate genes

Interleukin-17 levels in gingival crevicular fluid of aggressive periodontitis and chronic periodontitis patients.

CONTEXT: Interleukin-17 (IL-17) plays an important function in initiation, progression of any inflammatory condition. It is a pro-inflammatory cytokine and considered to be founding member. Periodontitis being an inflammatory condition of periodontium, IL-17 does have a potential role in periodontitis. The current research has shown positive correlation between the IL-17 and severity of periodontitis. Therefore, this research study aimed to evaluate the levels of IL-17 in aggressive periodontitis (AgP), chronic periodontitis (CP), and "healthy gingival sites." MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total o

Aggressive periodontitis presents a higher degree of bilateral symmetry in comparison with chronic periodontitis.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the occurrence of bilateral symmetry in the distribution of clinical parameters in subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) and severe chronic periodontitis (SCP). The sample comprised 53 subjects with GAP and 33 with SCP. Probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were recorded from both buccal and lingual interproximal sites of incisors and molars. The symmetry of periodontal destruction was analyzed in terms of intraclass coefficient correlations (ICC) for pairs of contralateral sites at which PD and/or CAL
