Transient global amnesia is often attributed to a seizure, vascular cause, or migraine, but the outcome is usually benign. The presence of migraine and important risk factors for stroke necessitates close patient monitoring. Anti-platelet therapy should be considered.

Transient global amnesia is a benign, self-limiting disorder primarily involving a disturbance of memory. It occurs in late middle and older aged adults. Patients with this syndrome do not have a history of head trauma, drug or alcohol intoxication, hypoglycemia or psychologic dysfunction. Once the episode has cleared, there are no residual deficits except amnesia for the events which occurred during the episode. This article includes a case presentation in addition to discussion of the clinical features, etiology, treatment and nursing interventions for the patient with a transient global amn

The clinical picture of transient global amnesia (TGA) is discussed on the basis of the clinical findings in 19 patients. The central symptom is an acute memory loss, leading to disorientation, helplessness and pseudo-confusion. The symptoms last for several hours and then fade away. Pathogenetically a functional impairment of the limbic system is proposed. Most cases of TGA are due to ischaemic disease; rare causes are epileptic seizures, tumours, encephalitis and toxic or metabolic conditions. In order to clarify the aetiology and initiate appropriate therapy meticulous neurological investig

Transient global amnesia is a well known syndrome, characterised by sudden loss of short term memory with retrospective amnesia, that appears in otherwise good healthy subjects. Transient global amnesia is often unknown and misunderstood. Authors explain pathogenetic hypothesis and diagnostic criteria, showing some clinical cases.

30 patients aged between 45 and 78 years and who had suffered from transient global amnesia (TGA), were seen at the Department of Neurology, Pordenone Public Hospital, in the period 1978 to 1982. 25 patients had one or more risk factors for cerebrovascular disease, such as hypertension, cardiac abnormalities, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. EEG examination revealed abnormal activity only in 7 patients. Brain Computed Tomography showed cerebral atrophy in 10 and hypodense lesions in 3 patients. 16 patients had been followed up for a mean interval of 20 months. During the follow-up period, 4 patien

The syndrome of transient global amnesia (TGA) is defined and described. Characteristic features, epidemical data, variables possibly provoking TGA, its possible etiology and anatomical basis are reviewed. A transient disturbance in the formation of lasting new memories (usually of less than one day) and a retrograde amnesia (which includes the period of the attack and possibly a short time before) are considered as the main features of TGA. A further trait of TGA is the high age of most of the patients subjected to it (58 years on the average). TGA most likely is based on a transient change i

Transient global amnesia is a clinical syndrome characterized by sudden onset of short-term memory loss followed by retrograde amnesia in an otherwise healthy subject. During the attack, the patient remains alert and retains much of his personal identity. The patient usually becomes upset and concerned about his memory loss. This condition may be diagnosed incorrectly as hysteria, psychosis, or temporal lobe seizure, despite its unique clinical features.

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia is a benign syndrome and one of the most frequent discharges from the emergency department that can hardly be distinguished from other mimicking diseases. No consensus in the evaluation of transient global amnesia has yet been found in the emergency setting.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 69-year-old woman who presented to our emergency department with an abrupt onset of anterograde amnesia, preceded by a similar amnesic episode misinterpreted as transient global amnesia. Neuroradiologic, neuropsychological, and neurophysiological evaluations supported the d

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neurological condition which is still a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Diagnostic clues are an acute onset of a disturbance of memory, a lack of other focal neurological deficits, and repetitive questioning of the patients about time and circumstances. Although the signs and symptoms are quite typical, making the diagnosis of TGA might still be challenging, depending on the patient’s characteristics. Taking a precise history from the patient and his/her next of kin is seminal. This article discusses the typical clinical presentation, pathophysiological

Following an episode of typical transient global amnesia (TGA), a female patient reported similar clinical attacks in 2 maternal aunts. Prior reports of familial TGA are few, and no previous account of affected relatives more distant than siblings or parents was discovered in a literature survey. The aetiology of familial TGA is unknown. A pathophysiological mechanism akin to that in migraine attacks, comorbidity reported in a number of the examples of familial TGA, is one possibility. The study of familial TGA cases might facilitate the understanding of TGA aetiology.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by a severe disturbance of memory, occurring rapidly, lasting less than a day and mainly affecting elderly subjects. During its acute phase, it is characterized by a severe anterograde amnesia, partial retrograde amnesia and anxiety with repetition of the same questions. The diagnosis is purely based on patient's clinical features. Complimentary examinations are only requested when atypical symptoms are present. The pathophysiology of TGA remains unknown, but it appears to be related to transient disturbances of the perfusion and oxygenation of t
