Cognitive insight, medication adherence and methamphetamine cessation in people enrolled in a pharmacotherapy trial for methamphetamine use.

BACKGROUND: The current study examined correlates of cognitive insight in people enrolled in a methamphetamine pharmacotherapy trial; whether cognitive insight at the start of the trial predicted medication adherence and reductions in methamphetamine use during the trial; and, whether insight would remain stable over the trial or improve with reductions in methamphetamine use. METHODS: A subset of people enrolled in a 12-week randomised placebo-controlled pharmacotherapy trial for methamphetamine dependence completed the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale, comprising subscales for Self-Reflection a

Hearing loss in amphetamine users.

Sensory perceptions are modified by amphetamines. Prolonged and heavy use can lead to neuronal damage, neurotransmitter depletion and receptor supersensitivity. Sensorineural deafness had been reported in chronic users of volatile inhalants, alcohol and heroin. There are no reports of hearing problems with amphetamines. Hearing loss was identified in seven amphetamine-dependent inpatients in the detox unit at Al Amal Hospital, Jeddah. Subjects were men aged 18 and over who met DSM IV criteria for substance dependence. The hearing loss was suspected on clinical grounds during the admission inte

Affective Temperaments Misdiagnosed as Adult Attention Deficit Disorder: Prevalence and Treatment Effects.

Adult attention-deficit disorder (ADD) is a common diagnosis, and amphetamine medications are increasingly used. Recent reports suggest high prevalence of affective temperaments, such as cyclothymia, in adult ADD. This study reexamines prevalence rates as reflecting misdiagnosis and reports for the first time on the effects of amphetamine medications on mood/anxiety and cognition in relation to affective temperaments. Among outpatients treated at the Tufts Medical Center Mood Disorders Program (2008-2017), 87 cases treated with amphetamines were identified, versus 163 non-amphetamine-treated c

California's Recovery Incentives Program: Implementation strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the increasing role of psychostimulants in the US drug poisoning crisis, there is an increasing need to effectively implement evidence-based treatment for individuals with stimulant use disorder (StimUD). Contingency management is a behavioral strategy with robust evidence of support for the treatment of StimUD. In 2023, California initiated a large-scale effort to implement CM as a treatment for individuals with a stimulant use disorder (cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamine) called the Recovery Incentives Program: California's Contingency Management Benefit. METHODS: Th

A Systematic Review of the Symptom Profile and Course of Methamphetamine-Associated PsychosisSubstance Use and Misuse.

OBJECTIVES: The psychiatric symptom profile of methamphetamine-associated psychosis (MAP) has varied considerably across studies of different research designs. We performed a systematic review to examine the available evidence for specific psychotic symptoms associated with MAP, including the clinical course and longitudinal changes in this symptom profile. METHODS: Five key electronic databases were searched to identify studies that examined the symptom profile or clinical course of MAP in individuals identified as having MAP. The reporting of specific psychiatric symptoms, and duration of s

Examining the Frequency of Stimulant Misuse among Patients with Primary Disorders of Hypersomnolence: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia are commonly treated by sleep specialists and encountered by other medical providers. Although pharmacotherapy with modafinil and traditional stimulants is considered the mainstay of treatment, physicians are often uncomfortable with their prescription because of concerns regarding misuse. The goal of this study was to assess the frequency of stimulant misuse in this population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed evaluating patients 18 years and older diagnosed with narcolepsy with and without cataplexy and idiopathic hy

Comparison of serious adverse effects of methylphenidate, atomoxetine and amphetamine in the treatment of ADHD: an adverse event analysis based on the FAERS database.

BACKGROUND: Methylphenidate, atomoxetine, and amphetamine are the most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD, approved by the FDA. Despite their widespread use, real-world studies on their serious adverse effects are limited. This study leverages the FAERS database to analyze the safety of these drugs. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using FAERS data from 2004 to 2023. Adverse event (AE) signals for methylphenidate, atomoxetine, and amphetamine were identified by calculating reporting odds ratios (RORs), proportional reporting ratios (PRRs), information components (ICs), an

Psychostimulants and the cerebellum: Does the cerebellum get involved in the abuse of methamphetamine and cocaine?

Clinical evidence suggests that the cerebellum is one of the brain areas most vulnerable to the effects of psychostimulants. Functional neuroimaging studies support the idea that the cerebellum is involved in the neural circuits affected by these drugs. The cerebellum plays a vital role in the brain's reward mechanisms, working in conjunction with the striatum, ventral tegmental area (VTA), and prefrontal cortex (PFC). The cerebellum plays a crucial role in processing rewards and associated emotions. Research indicates that the cerebellum serves as a central hub for regional disconnection duri

Effects of lithium and valproate on hippocampus citrate synthase activity in an animal model of mania.

Some studies suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction may be related to the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder. In this work, we evaluated the activity of citrate synthase in rats, and the effects of the treatment with mood stabilizers (lithium and valproate) on the enzyme activity. In the first experiment (reversal treatment), amphetamine or saline were administered to rats for 14 days, and between day 8 and 14, rats were treated with either lithium, valproate or saline. In the second experiment (prevention treatment), rats were pretreated with lithium, valproate or saline, and between day 8 a

Assessing the mediating role of impulsivity between methamphetamine-induced psychotic disorders and increased gambling severity in methamphetamine-dependent individuals.

Pathological gambling (PG) and methamphetamine-induced psychotic disorders (MIPD) both frequently occurs in methamphetamine-dependent individuals. The current study examined whether impulsivity mediated the relationship between MIPD and gambling severity. The sample consisted of 320 pathological gamblers with methamphetamine dependence (mean age 32.6 years, ranging from 15 to 64 years) voluntarily recruited from three rehabilitation centers in Hunan, China. The semistructured clinical interview of DSM-IV-TR Axis I Disorders Patient Edition was used to diagnosis the presence of MIPD and PG by r
