The radiological picture of the amputation stump for osteosarcoma was revised on 57 cases, in which a follow-up after surgery was possible for at least 4 months, with a maximum of over 12 years. In 51/57 cases (89%) no recurrency was observed; in 6/57 cases (11%) a local neoplastic recurrency was confirmed on clinical and histopathological grounds. The usual aspects of late modifications induced by surgery is osteoporosis of the residual bone, which may assume a geographical pattern, with thinning of the stump apex and formation of a periosteal spur directed towards to soft tissues. The typica

45-year-old woman with history of hallux valgus surgery and torpid evolution, which led to transtibial amputation. Six months after surgery, she began to experience involuntary movements of the stump such as myoclonus, that were triggered by touch or hip extension, associating worsening of the previous stump and phantom limb pain. During the following year, concurring with change of prosthesis, symptoms progressively worsened, which limited walking. The therapeutic approach to pain and myoclonus was initially pharmacological, without response. Given the clinical and ultrasound suspicion of neu

OBJECTIVE: Compare the formation of symptomatic neuromas in patients submitted to digital amputations, with and without nerve conduits (Neur … months, and six months postoperatively.
RESULTS: Using nerve conduits (Neurolac®) in digital nerve amputation stumps had statistical significance (p = 0.04) in preventing pain due to symptomatic neuroma at the end of six months after digital regularization.
CONCLUSION: There is a favorable trend towards using conduits as prophylaxis of symptomatic neuroma formati …

When local tissue is insufficient for the revision of unhealed below-knee stumps tissue expansion offers an interesting alternative for local coverage. We used this method in seven patients (five men, two women; mean age 30 years) who had had below-knee amputations, six of them after injury to a healthy limb and one for purpura fulminans. Ten tissue expanders were inflated slowly and intermittently either weekly or twice weekly depending on the patients. The mean expansion period was 92 days. Mean hospital stay for the two operations was 5.8 (range 4-9) and 7.6 (range 6-10) days, respectively.

AIM: To study the peculiarities of peroneal stump remodelling after transtibial amputation in the process of prosthesis usage.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A histological study of the ends of the stumps of the fibula in 68 patients was performed. Terms after amputation: 2-8 years.
RESULTS: In the 1st group the stumps with the reparative process completion were formed. In the 2nd group there were sharp disturbances of the reparative process with the formation of the cone-shaped end. In the 3rd group there was a pronounced periosteal bone formation with changes in the shape and structure of bone tiss

In post-traumatic amputations, in particular in leg amputations, the presence of an unstable scar or of ulcerous areas that are difficult to heal in the site of the amputation stump constitutes a repair problem that is not easily solved. In this specific field of reconstruction skin expansion has earned significant agreement, and is even considered to be a safe and reliable method for the surgical rehabilitation of the amputation stump, allowing us to obtain high-quality tegumentary covering, with no excessive thickness, that adapts well to the prosthesis and to the underlying skeleton, and th

In five patients, with intractable pain from neuromas that developed after amputations at the wrist or forearm, the neuromas were resected and the median nerve anastamosed to the ulnar nerve under the pronator teres muscle. In one patient, the anterior interosseous nerve was also anastamosed to the superficial radial nerve under the muscles of the forearm. Patients reported an 80% to 90% reduction in pain. This procedure is limited to patients in which all other treatments have failed.
