[Prevention of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in tropical areas].

Iron deficiency is the most widespread nutritional disease in the World. It is prevalent in tropical areas especially in pregnant women and children. The main cause in these areas is consumption of foods containing inhibitors of iron absorption resulting in insufficient bioavailability. In advanced stages of iron deficiency, low hemoglobin levels lead to anemia. Functional consequences of anemia depend on age including mental and physical retardation in children and work disability in adults. Although other disorders including parasitic, infectious, genetic, and nutritional diseases may be inv

Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia in Women with Bronchial Asthma.

This case control study was conducted in the out patient department (OPD), Enam Medical College & Hospital (EMCH), Dhaka, Bangladesh from 1st January 2017 to 31st December 2017. The aim of our study was to find the possible association between serum iron state and iron deficiency anemia with bronchial asthma in women. We investigated 40 diagnosed female cases of well controlled bronchial asthma and 20 healthy female as control. In both groups complete blood count (CBC) with peripheral smear was done, C-reactive protein (CRP), serum iron, serum ferritin, and serum total iron binding capacity (T

Frequency of hypoferritinemia, iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in outpatients.

The prevalence rates of hypoferritinemia (IDec/one abnormal indicator), iron deficiency (IDef/two abnormal indicators) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children who were referred to the outpatient clinics of the Department of Pediatrics for the first time within 1 month were investigated. Exclusion criteria were iron therapy before and during the study period and a history of chronic illness. Acute-phase reactants, such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein levels, were measured in all cases indicative of infectious diseases. Blood samples were obtained from each study pa

Risk factors associated with anemia, iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in rural Nepali pregnant women.

We conducted a cross sectional study to investigate risk factors associated with severe anemia [hemoglobin (Hb) < 8.0 g dl(-1)] and poor iron status among Nepali pregnant women. Socio-demographic, anthropometric, health and dietary data were collected from 3,531 women living in the southeastern plains of Nepal. Stool samples were analyzed for intestinal helminthes. Dark adaptation was assessed using the Night Vision Threshold Test (NVTT). Hb levels were measured in all subjects to detect anemia and the soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) was measured among a subsample of 479 women. The iron st

Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia and their association with pulmonary embolism.

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency (ID) has not been associated with pulmonary embolism (PE). The aim was to assess whether ID is associated with an increased likelihood of developing PE within the subsequent 12 months. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective observational study. Patients with PE during follow-up were selected as cases, and those without the event as controls. Patients with chronic diseases, cancer, fractures, or recent hospital admissions were excluded. RESULTS: A total of 43 cases and 199 controls were enrolled. The mean age was 61±21 years. ID increased the risk of PE at 12 months

Ferumoxytol for the treatment of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: A litany of recent evidence supports the morbidity of intra-natal iron-deficiency anemia and its prodrome, iron deficiency. Oral iron administered during second and third trimesters does not get to the developing fetus if the mother is iron deficient. This is especially concerning as the rapidly developing fetal brain is in particular need of iron sufficiency. Intra-natal iron deficiency is associated with autism, schizophrenia and abnormal brain structure. The obstetrical literature reports an unacceptably high incidence of gastrointestinal adverse events with oral iron. The tim

[Iron deficiency and anemia in oncology].

Anemia in oncology is no longer seen only as a side effect of chemotherapies. This comorbidity may be multifactorial, clinically and, for example, may be rather chronic when the patient has chronic renal failure associated, resulting in renal anemia. Similarly, the presence of iron deficiency, which can be solely responsible or contributing factor of anemia, is also a factor to be taken into account in both the diagnosis and exploration of anemia and in its treatment, requiring the use of injectable iron complexes for treatment, if necessary in combination with an erythropoiesis agent stimulat

An approach to iron-deficiency anemia.

Iron-deficiency anemia is a common reason for referral to a gastroenterologist. In adult men and postmenopausal women, gastrointestinal tract pathology is often the cause of iron-deficiency anemia, so patients are frequently referred for endoscopic evaluation. Endoscopy may be costly and at times difficult for the patient. Therefore, physicians need to know what lesions can be identified reliably and, more importantly, the importance of ruling out life-threatening conditions such as occult malignancy. Over the past decade, a number of prospective studies have been completed that examined the y

Safety of intravenous iron isomaltoside for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety for mother and child of using intravenous iron isomaltoside (IV-IIM) during pregnancy. METHODS: Using an appointment register, we retrospectively identified all pregnant women who received a single dose of 1000 or 1500 mg IV-IIM in the maternity ward of Falu Hospital and subsequently gave birth between August 6, 2013 and July 31, 2018. Women who received IV-IIM (case group) were individually matched with pregnant women who did not receive IV-IIM (control group) by delivery date, maternal age (± 2 years), and parity. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs), d

Uterine disorders and iron deficiency anemia.

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a clinical entity which can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Classification according to the acronym PALM-COEIN (polyp, adenomyosis, leiomyoma, malignancy, and hyperplasia; coagulopathy, ovulatory dysfunction, endometrial, iatrogenic, and not otherwise classified) provides a structured approach to establish the cause of AUB. The goal of this review is to discuss the different mechanisms and the relationship between uterine disorders and AUB. Heavy menstrual bleeding, a subgroup of AUB, is more closely related to the presence of uterine fibroids. The relationsh

Iron Deficiency Anemia in Celiac Disease.

The iron absorption process developsmainly in the proximal duodenum. This portion of the intestine is typically destroyed in celiac disease (CD), resulting in a reduction in absorption of iron and subsequent iron deficiency anemia (IDA). In fact, the most frequent extra-intestinal manifestation (EIM) of CD is IDA, with a prevalence between 12 and 82% (in relation with the various reports) in patients with new CD diagnosis. The primary treatment of CD is the gluten-free diet (GFD), which is associated with adequate management of IDA, if present. Iron replacement treatment historically has been

Management of Perioperative Iron Deficiency Anemia.

Preoperative anemia affects 30-40% of patients undergoing major surgery and is an independent risk factor for perioperative blood transfusion, morbidity, and mortality. Absolute or functional iron deficiency is its leading cause. Nonanemic hematinic deficiencies are also prevalent and may hamper preoperative hemoglobin optimization and/or recovery from postoperative anemia. As modifiable risk factors, anemia and hematinic deficiencies should be detected and corrected prior to major surgical procedures. Postoperative anemia is even more common (up to 80-90%) due to surgery-associated blood loss

Iron deficiency anemia and glucose metabolism.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a global public health problem affecting both developing and developed countries with major consequences for human health as well as social and economic development. It occurs at all stages of the life cycle, but is more prevalent in pregnant women and young children. IDA appears to be more common in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic population. Iron deficiency (ID) and IDA can impair glucose homeostasis in animals and human and may negatively affect glycemic control and predispose to more complications in diabetic patients. On the other hand diabetes a

Iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women.

Screening for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in all pregnant women is recommended. IDA is a prevalent cause of nutritional deficiency anemia, and oral iron is the first line of treatment. Other treatments include parenteral iron or blood transfusion(s). Untreated IDA in pregnancy can result in complications for the mother and fetus.
