Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a pathologic condition with progressive abdominal aortic dilatation of 3.0 cm or more that predisposes the abdominal aorta to rupture. Most abdominal aortic aneurysms are asymptomatic until they rupture, although some are detected when an imaging study is performed for other reasons. The risk factors for abdominal aortic aneurysm include hypertension, coronary artery disease, tobacco use, male sex, a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm, age older than 65 years, and peripheral artery disease. Abdominal ultrasonography is the preferred modality to screen for …

Jugular venous aneurysms are uncommon and can involve the internal, external, and anterior jugular veins. These aneurysms may be congenital or acquired secondary to malignancy, inflammation, trauma or arteriovenous fistulas. Treatment strategies are not clearly defined and involve either surveillance of asymptomatic aneurysms or resection, excision, and ligation of the aneurysmal vein. In this case series, we discuss the presentation, diagnostics, treatments and outcomes in 3 patients with jugular venous aneurysms.

The aim of this study was to outline the clinical features of syphilitic aortic aneurysm. The study materials were based on a comprehensive literature review of publications on syphilitic aortic aneurysm published between 2000 and 2017. Syphilitic aortic aneurysm occurred most commonly in the ascending aorta in either a saccular or a fusiform shape. Syphilitic aortic aneurysm was often complicated by aortic valve insufficiency (in almost half of the patients), and by a coronary artery/ostium lesion in 16.5% of the patients. Aortic valve operation was necessary in one fourth, and coronary arter…

Splenic artery aneurysms - the most common visceral artery aneurysms - are found most often in multiparous women and in patients with portal hypertension. Indications for treatment of splenic artery aneurysm or pseudoaneurysm include specific symptoms, female gender and childbearing age, presence of portal hypertension, planned liver transplantation, a pseudoaneurysm of any size, and an aneurysm with a diameter of more than 2.5cm. Historically, the treatment of splenic artery aneurysm has been surgical ligation of the splenic artery, ligation of the aneurysm, or aneurysmectomy with or without …

Abdominal aortic aneurysm refers to abdominal aortic dilation of 3.0 cm or greater. The main risk factors are age older than 65 years, male sex, and smoking history. Other risk factors include a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm, coronary artery disease, hypertension, peripheral artery disease, and previous myocardial infarction. Diagnosis may be made by physical examination, an incidental finding on imaging, or ultrasonography. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released updated recommendations for abdominal aortic aneurysm screening in 2014. Men 65 to 75 years of age with a hi…

Peripheral aneurysms typically present as asymptomatic incidental findings or may present with symptoms when there is local compression of other structures, such as nerves or veins, with ischemia, or rarely with rupture. Larger and symptomatic aneurysms should be repaired. Ultrasonography, computed tomography angiography, and magnetic resonance angiography can be used to define inflow and outflow and better characterize the aneurysm, particularly size and thrombus. Repair of peripheral aneurysms typically involves resection with interposition grafting, although certain anatomic sites may be am…

A 14-year-old boy presented with an unusual bulging chest noted to be increasing slowly over the last few years. He had no other complaints. Cardiac echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed aneurysmal dilation of the ascending aorta with moderate aortic valve insufficiency and moderate pericardial effusion. The boy underwent reconstruction of his ascending aorta in the form of a Bentall procedure using a 25-mm Carbomedic valve conduit.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical artery aneurysm is a rare condition associated with increased risk for aneuploidy and fetal demise.
CASE: We report a case of umbilical artery aneurysm discovered at 27 weeks of gestation in one fetus of a dichorionic, diamniotic twin pregnancy. The patient was hospitalized to monitor for expansion of the aneurysm. Corticosteroids were administered, and, after genetic amniocentesis revealed a normal karyotype, cesarean delivery was performed at 28 2/7 weeks of gestation. Pathologic examination confirmed an umbilical artery aneurysm in the cord of the affected fetus.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) confer a substantial healthcare burden in the Western world. Surgical or endovascular therapy is indicated in patients with a maximum diameter exceeding 5.5 cm. Patients with smaller AAA must undergo a specific ultrasound surveillance program aimed at avoiding exposure to an increased risk of rupture once their AAA exceeds the threshold for active treatment. Based on improved understanding of the pathophysiology of AAA, recent years provided initial insight into potential medical treatment options. The presence of AAA is currently regarded a coronary artery dis…

Main pulmonary artery aneurysm is an exceedingly rare entity. We present a case of main pulmonary artery aneurysm with patent ductus arteriosus in a sixty-year-old woman. The aneurysm was successfully treated with aneurysmectomy and primary anastomosis of the defect of the main pulmonary artery, and the patent ductus arteriosus was divided. The etiology, operative indication and surgical intervention of main pulmonary artery aneurysm are discussed along with a review of the literature.

More and more renal artery aneurysms are being diagnosed, especially after the introduction of selective arteriography for the evaluation of renovascular hypertension. However, renal artery aneurysm still remains a rare entity. The pathogenesis of renal artery aneurysm is identical to the pathogenesis of arterial aneurysm in other arteries. Symptoms of aneurysm of the renal artery are dependent on a variety of factors, the most important of which are the size of the aneurysm, its location, and whether or not rupture has occurred. The indication for operation on renal artery aneurysm is rupture…

Cirsoid (or varicose) aneurysm of the uterine vessels causes severe, life-threatening uterine bleeding. Previous trophoblastic neoplasia is a common predisposing factor. Diagnosis is by arteriography and may be missed without it.

Less than 200 cases of main pulmonary artery aneurysms have been reported and most came from autopsy series. The aneurysms may be associated with congenital cardiovascular lesions, syphilis, degenerative changes in the arterial wall and possibly trauma. Pulmonary artery aneurysm is a true entity which can occur with or without typical clinical findings. Physicians should pay more attention to the so-called "aneurysmal dilatation" or "idiopathic dilatation" of the pulmonary artery and obtain a correct diagnosis by angiography. Since pulmonary artery aneurysm carries a risk of rupturing, the ope…
