The role of cytokines in unstable angina.

A growing body of evidence suggests that inflammation plays a major role in the pathogenesis of unstable angina; this evidence is mainly derived from the prognostic role of the acute phase reaction proteins, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen. Since the production of acute phase protein is under the control of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, it is probable that citokines, such as tumour-necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1 and IL-6 are involved in the same process. Indeed, elevated levels of IL-1 and IL-6 have been found by our group and by others, in patients with acut

Inlet patch mimicking unstable angina pectoris.

The ectopic stomach mucosa island in the proximal esophagus, which is generally known as the inlet patch or cervical inlet patch, is called as the heterotopic gastric mucosa of the esophagus. Despite its asymptomatic progress, it may cause chest pain, shortness of breath and difficulty in swallowing due to the acid secretion from the ectopic mucosa. The study aimed to present a patient who underwent coronary angiography with an unstable angina pectoris diagnosis by cardiologists for gastric chest pain but found an inlet patch in gastroduodenoscopy.

[Exercise tests in unstable angina suspects].

The review is devoted to exercise tests (ET) potential in patients with different forms of coronary heart disease (CHD) exacerbation and suspected unstable angina. It is well known that unstable angina untreated pharmacologically is a contraindication for ET. Of interest in clinical practice is diagnosis, risk assessment and treatment policy in patients with chest pain. The main focus is on ET conduction in unstable angina suspects with low and intermediate risk, on safety and validity of ET conduction in these patients.

[Cardiac troponin I in unstable angina].

BACKGROUND: Unstable angina implies high risk of myocardial infarction and sudden death. Increased levels of cytoplasmatic enzymes and proteins (creatine phosphokinase, MB creatine phosphokinase troponin T, etc.) were described in unstable angina, providing information about incoming major coronary events. Cardiac troponin I (cTn-I) is a structural protein inhibiting the actinomyosine ATPase; it is only found in myocardial cells. Serum titration of cTn-I has been recently introduced into clinical practice as a sensitive and specific marker of myocardial cellular necrosis. OBJECTIVES: The aim

Puerarin injection for unstable angina pectoris.

BACKGROUND: Puerarin is extracted from the Chinese herb puerariae lobata. Many users of Chinese herbal medicine believe that puerarin has positive effects in the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD). In recent years puerarin injection has been widely used to treat CHD and angina pectoris. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of puerarin injection for unstable angina. SEARCH STRATEGY: The following electronic databases were searched: The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register on The Cochrane Library (Issue 3, 2004), MEDLINE (1995 to 2004), EMBASE (1995 to 2004), CBM (1995 to 2004),
