Multilevel Lumbar Epidural Angiolipoma: A Case Report.

Spinal angiolipomas are rare benign tumors composed of mature adipose tissue and vascular elements, most commonly located in the thoracic epidural space. Lumbar involvement is considerably less frequent, and variable proportions of adipose and vascular tissue may result in atypical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics and diagnostic uncertainty. We report the case of a 36-year-old woman with an approximately one-year history of persistent low back pain associated with subjective bilateral lower-extremity weakness despite a preserved neurological examination. An initial non-contrast…

Primary posterior mediastinal angiolipoma: a case report.

An angiolipoma is a benign tumor, and a primary mediastinal angiolipoma is extremely rare. Herein, we describe the presentation and management of a posterior mediastinal angiolipoma in a woman with loss of consciousness. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a contrast-enhancing mass in the right posterior mediastinum, with intercostal arterial blood supply identified on three-dimensional reconstruction CT (3D-CT). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a fatty component. Pre-operative embolization of the supplying intercostal artery was performed to reduce intraoperative bleeding. Mass resecti…

Frequent activating PIK3CA mutations in sporadic angiolipoma.

BACKGROUND: Angiolipoma (AL) is considered as a lipoma variant that is characterized by the combination of mature adipocytes and capillary blood vessels diffusely distributed within the tumor. With the exception of recurrent PRKD2 mutations of uncertain pathogenetic significance, the genetic abnormalities of ALs are unknown, in the absence of any of the specific chromosomal aberrations described in other lipoma variants. METHODS: Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded blocks of 13 conventional ALs and 5 cellular ALs from 17 individuals were retrieved and analyzed for mutations in exons 9 and 20…

Angiolipoma: rare cause of adult ileoileal intussusception.

Intussusception in adults is rare and more common in the paediatric population. Clinically, most adult patients have chronic non-specific symptoms due to partial obstruction. In contrast, most paediatric patients present with the classic triad of abdominal pain, vomiting and blood in stool. Adult intussusception is commonly associated with an organic aetiology, most likely a benign or malignant neoplasm as a lead point of intussusception. We describe a case of a 29-year-old woman with subacute presentation due to ileoileal intussusception secondary to a polypoid submucosal angiolipoma. Angioli…

Chest wall angiolipoma complicating von Recklinghausen disease.

We present the case of an 18-year-old man with chest wall angiolipoma and a medical history of von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis. The chest wall tumor was originally detected during an evaluation for chest pain. For diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, video-assisted thoracoscopic resection was performed, and the tumor was histopathologically confirmed to be an angiolipoma. Chest wall angiolipoma is exceptionally rare. Only two cases have been reported in the English literature, with no reports regarding chest wall angiolipoma in a patient with von Recklinghausen disease.

Parapharyngeal angiolipoma causing obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is the cessation of airflow with the continuance of respiratory effort during sleep. OSAS associated with a neck mass is extremely rare. Angiolipoma is a rare, benign, fatty tumour composed of mature lipocytes and multiple areas containing angiomatous elements. The treatment for an angiolipoma is surgical excision. We report the case of a 47-year-old male who presented with a history of loud snoring associated with sleep apnoea. A polysomnographic study demonstrated an apnoea-hypopnoea index of 72/h. CT showed a 3.5 x 3 x 8 cm3 hypoattenuated mass of fa…

Ruptured hepatic angiolipoma in tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) may be associated with hepatic angiomyolipoma. In contradistinction to renal angiomyolipoma this lesion is rare, and nontraumatic hemorrhage has not so far been described. This is the first report of a spontaneously ruptured, surgically treated and histologically verified, hepatic angiomyolipoma in TSC. Anomalies of the vessel walls and consequently the hazard of bleeding are known to increase with the diameter of the tumor in other localizations. It is concluded that in cases with rapid tumor growth and marked vessel anomalies elective surgery should be consid

A giant infiltrating angiolipoma of the mediastinum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Angiolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm composed of mature fatty tissue and multiple small abnormal blood vessels. Infiltrating mediastinal angiolipoma is an extremely rare tumor associated with delayed diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old woman was presented with 3-month history of mild chest tightness. Imaging of the chest showed a large mass with fat densities in the middle superior mediastinum. A presumptive diagnosis was a tumor of liposarcoma. The patient was scheduled for a thoracotomy. After the excision, the symptoms were relieved and histological study revealed that…

Infiltrative angiolipoma of the parotid salivary gland in a dog.

Solitary benign angiolipoma and infiltrative angiolipoma are rare tumours in dogs. Angiolipomata can be distinguished histologically from lipomata by the large number of tightly packed blood vessels seen between the adipocytes with multiple fibrin thrombi occupying some of the vessels' lumens. The dog presented with a solitary slow-growing mass in the cervical region. Histopathology revealed multifocal to coalescing single or clusters of blood-filled vessels lined by flattened endothelial cells with narrow, elongated, basophilic nuclei. These regions were embedded in adipose tissue with multif…

Preoperative diagnosis of colonic angiolipoma: a case report.

Angiolipoma, a common benign tumor mostly seen in the subcutaneous tissue, is a rare pathological condition in the gastrointestinal tract that is usually diagnosed postoperatively. In this case report, an angiolipoma was diagnosed preoperatively by imaging (including CT scans, abdominal echo, barium enema, and colonoscopy). This pathology was confirmed postoperatively. Computed tomography scan, abdominal echo, and barium enema images were presented.

Spinal angiolipoma: case report and review of literature.

Spinal extradural angiolipomas are distinct, benign, and rare lesions composed of mature lipocytes admixed with abnormal blood vessels. They account for 0.14% of all spinal axis tumors. The case described here was a 72-year-old patient presenting with a history of paraparesis, hypoesthesia under the T2 level, hyperreflexia, and urinary overflow incontinence that appeared within 7 days after the administration of a coronary vasodilator drug regimen. The spinal magnetic resonance scan showed a lipomatous mass with signal void lesions, suggesting a vascular component of the tumor. The patient imp…

Epidural angiolipoma producing compression of the cauda equina.

Epidural angiolipomas are rare tumours and are histologically benign, but their myelographic and macroscopic appearance is malignant. Surgical results are satisfactory. A case is reported in a 48-year-old woman with a slowly progressive cauda equina compression syndrome in whom an epidural angiolipoma was successfully removed. The special feature of this case was a generalized severe spinal osteoporosis with a pathological fracture of a vertebral body at the level of the tumour.

Spinal Angiolipoma: A Rare Cause of Spinal Cord Compression.

Spinal angiolipomas (SALs) are uncommon benign tumors composed of mature adipocytes and abnormal blood vessels, with symptoms usually appearing gradually due to the progressive compression of the spinal cord. In this context, we report the case of a 34-year-old female patient with no significant medical history who presented with heaviness in both lower limbs and difficulty walking for the past six months. MRI showed an epidural posterior lesion extending from the first to the sixth thoracic vertebrae, strongly compressing the spinal cord, and surgical intervention for spinal cord decompressio…

Angiolipoma associated with antiretroviral switch therapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Angiolipomas have been well described in patients with HIV exposed to protease inhibitors with possible resolution after switching to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-based regimens. Resolution of symptoms have occurred with switches to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-based regimens; however, little is known regarding the development of angiolipomas when switching from NNRTI- to modern, integrase strand transfer inhibitor-based regimens. We describe a patient who underwent switch therapy from tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine/efavirenz…
