We developed rhodium-catalyzed alkoxylcarbonylation/acylation of indolines using anhydrides as a safe and easy-to-handle carbonyl source. This catalytic process represents an additive- and CO-free carbonylation, establishing a simple and straightforward protocol for synthesizing C7-carbonylated indolines. Notably, this reaction provides a successful example of C-H acylation of indolines that results in the formation of α-branched ketones, which were difficult to prepare by previously reported analogous catalytic reactions.

This is a descriptive study of six men who had been occupationally exposed to heated epoxy resin containing hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) who presented with rhinitis, nasal mucosal erosions, and significant epistaxis; three also had asthma. When they were removed from exposure to HHPA, the rhinitis symptoms, nasal erosions, and epistaxis resolved spontaneous. All six had high titers of IgG and IgE against HHP-HSA as determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). This study was initiated to assess the safety of atmospheres containing maleic anhydride. Accordingly, rats (15/sex/group), hamsters (15/sex/group), and monkeys (3/sex/group) were treated 6 hr a day 5 days a week for 6 months. Data on synthesis of new polymer compounds with potential interferon-inducing and antiviral activity are presented. Maleic anhydride (MA)-based alternating copolymers, in particular, copolymers of divinyl ether with MA containing five-member oxygen cycles in the chain, as well as furan copolymers with MA, were shown to be promising interferon inducers. The antiviral activity was found in copolymers based on allene hydrocarbons.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether workers sensitized by one acid anhydride, trimellitic anhydride (TMA), would possibly react immunologically to two other acid anhydrides, phthalic anhydride (PA) or maleic anhydride (MA). We studied serum samples from four workers with TMA asthma and immunoglobin E (IgE) against TMA conjugated to human serum albumin (TM-HSA).
