Coccidiostats are used in animal production to control infections caused by Eimeria spp., particularly in poultry. While these compounds are effective in preventing coccidiosis and maintaining production efficiency, their use raises concerns regarding the occurrence of residues in the feed-food chain. This review summarises current knowledge on residue occurrence, transfer to food of animal origin, and depletion of coccidiostats following authorised use. Special attention is given to cross-contamination during feed manufacturing, which represents one of the sources of unintended exposure of no

The additive, 'Zinc-l-selenomethionine' (Zn-l-SeMet) is intended to be used as a source of selenium for all animal species. The applicant intends to market the active compound blended with inert carriers (Availa®Se). Zn-l-SeMet is a safe source of selenium for chickens for fattening; the conclusion is extended to all animal species. Selenium from Zn-l-SeMet does not elicit any adverse effects not expected for a selenium compound. The use of Zn-l-SeMet in animal nutrition is expected to result in a similar increase in selenium deposition in animal tissues/products as that resulting from other s

The use of medicated feed is a common practice in animal food production to improve animal health. Tetracyclines and β-Lactams are the groups that are most frequently added to this type of feed. The measurement of the concentration of the analytes in these types of samples is sometimes due to the matrix characteristic, and manufacturers are demanding fast, precise and reproducible methods. A rapid confirmatory method based on a simple extraction protocol using acidified methanol and followed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer for the quantification

Melamine can be present at low levels in food and feed mostly from its legal use as a food contact material in laminates and plastics, as a trace contaminant in nitrogen supplements used in animal feeds, and as a metabolite of the pesticide cyromazine. The mechanism of toxicity of melamine involves dose-dependent formation of crystals with either endogenous uric acid or a structural analogue of melamine, cyanuric acid, in renal tubules resulting in potential acute kidney failure. Co-exposure to melamine and cyanuric acid in livestock, fish, pets and laboratory animals shows higher toxicity com…

With the advancement of microbiome research, the requirement to consider the intestinal microbiome as the "last organ" of an animal emerged. Through the production of metabolites and/or the stimulation of the host's hormone and neurotransmitter synthesis, the gut microbiota can potentially affect the host's eating behavior both long and short-term. Based on current evidence, the major mediators appear to be short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), peptide hormones such as peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), as well as the amino acid tryptophan with the associated neurotransmitter sero

The study of animal feeding behaviour is of interest to understand feeding, to investigate the effect of treatments and conditions or to predict illness. This paper reviews the different steps to undertake when studying animal feeding behaviour, with illustrations for group-housed pigs. First, one must be aware of the mechanisms that control feeding and the various influences that can change feeding behaviour. Satiety is shown to largely influence free feeding (ad libitum and without an operant condition) in animals, but 'free' feeding seems a very fragile process, given the many factors that …

A liquid chromatographic method for the multiresidue determination of tetracyclines (TCs) in feeds is described. The levels of quantitation were 10 ppm each for tetracycline-HCl (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline-HCl (CTC); the detection limit was 40 ppb for each. The calibration curves were linear between 2.5 and 100 ppm. The procedure involved double extraction with pH 2.0 and pH 4.5 McIlvain buffers, cleanup on a Sephadex LH-20 column, separation on a Nova-Pak C18 column, and detection at 370 nm. Recoveries of 10 micrograms/g of each TC in multiresidue feed samples ranged fr

Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defenses, significantly impacts livestock health, welfare, and productivity. Green synthesis has emerged as a sustainable approach for enhancing the stability and bioavailability of natural antioxidants in animal feed. Unlike conventional extraction methods, green-synthesized antioxidants derived from plant extracts, essential oils, and agro-industrial by-products offer improved oxidative stability, reduced toxicity, and enhanced bioactivity. These bioengineered antioxidants not only mitigate oxidative str…

Theobromine exerts deleterious effects on animal physiology. Removal of theobromine from the millions of metric tons of cocoa pod husks (CPH) discarded annually could allow for the production of cheap, CPH-based animal feed. The aim of this study was to evaluate safety and nutritional value of bio-detheobrominated CPH in Sprague-Dawley rats. Theobromine was removed from CPH by treatment with an isolate of Talaromyces verruculosus (TvTD). Substituted feeds containing CPH were formulated by replacing 30% or 50% of the maize content of regular rat feed with TvTD-treated or inactivated TvTD-treate…

Undeclared antibiotics in poultry feed contribute to exposure to antimicrobial drug residues, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where routine surveillance is limited by cost and laboratory constraints. Conventional analytical screening requires specialised equipment, making rapid, accessible alternatives valuable. This study evaluated the feasibility of re-purposing qualitative antibiotic screening techniques, originally developed and validated for milk, in rapid, multi-residue antibiotic detection in broiler feed after specialised sample pre-treatment. A microbial inhibition as

Linezolid (LNZ), an oxazolidinone antibiotic, is widely used in human clinical practice. However, due to insufficient regulatory oversight, some livestock farms illegally incorporate LNZ into animal feed, leading to residues in animal-derived foods and posing a food safety risk. In this study, through computer-assisted molecular simulation, a minimal epitope design strategy was proposed and an optimal novel hapten LNZ-1 was designed and identified. Subsequently, a high-affinity monoclonal antibody was successfully generated. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration of this antibody was 2.87 n…

Former food products (FFPs) are increasingly recognized as sustainable feed ingredients. While nutritionally valuable, FFPs may contain cocoa-based confectionery, which is a source of methylxanthines such as theobromine (TB) and caffeine (CF) and can impact animal health. This study quantified TB and CF concentrations in 12 FFPs using HPLC-UV, evaluated FFP inclusion rates in animals' diets against European Union (EU) maximum levels (MLs), and dietary exposure against toxicological thresholds. TB levels ranged from 59.6 to 1147.1 μg/g and CF from 9.3 to 118.1 μg/g. All products, except one, co

A triazole-stabilized fluorescence sensor is developed for copper detection in the study. Tris-(benzyltriazolylmethyl)amine (TBTA) is used to improve the sensitivity and stability for the sensing system. A series of comparative experiments are performed with and without TBTA. In the presence of TBTA, the fluorescence decrease ratio is enhanced from 2.46 to 118.25; the detection limit is reduced from 67 nM to 3.6 nM; the higher selectivity toward copper compared to the other metal ions is verified, including K+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, Fe3+ and Cr3+. Besides, the sensing syste
