Posterior ankyloglossia: a case report.

Ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, refers to an abnormally short lingual frenulum. Ankyloglossia is a recognized but poorly defined condition and has been reported to cause feeding difficulties, dysarthria, dyspnea, and social or mechanical problems. In infants, the most concerning symptoms are feeding difficulties and inability to breastfeed. While a recent trend toward breastfeeding has brought frenulectomy back into favor, the literature regarding treatment remains inconclusive. We report a case of posterior ankyloglossia with anterior mucosal hooding and a simple, safe, and effective way to tre…

The lingual frenulum, ankyloglossia, and breastfeeding.

Between 1997 and 2012, the diagnoses of ankyloglossia and the indication for frenotomy increased by ˃800%. About 38% of diagnosed cases are surgically treated. Breastfeeding promotion includes evaluating maternal hereditary and personal history of breastfeeding, breast structure, endocrinological physiology, emotional well-being of the mother, breastfeeding technique, quality and quantity of milk, and the newborn's ability to latch on and suckle. Frenotomy would be indicated when restriction of tongue function causes difficulties that have not resolved after thorough evaluation and counseling …

Ankyloglossia in breastfeeding infants. An update.

Short frenulum, or ankyloglossia, may lead to breastfeeding problems, with an impact on infant development, nipple damage, and early abandonment of breastfeeding. There are currently no homogeneous diagnostic criteria, thus leading to both overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis and associated clinical consequences. The challenge to approach this condition lies in establishing whether it is a normal anatomical variation or a lingual frenulum without a functional impact and when breastfeeding difficulties which are typically attributed to it are actually caused by the frenulum. Approximately 50% of an…

Benefits of frenulotomy in infants with ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: Ankyloglossia is a common, congenital abnormality often causing feeding difficulties in infants. This study aimed to evaluate indications and outcomes of frenulotomy performed in infants with ankyloglossia for breast-feeding difficulties. METHODS: 85 patients were prospectively identified as they underwent frenulotomy in Pinderfields Hospital ENT outpatient department between February 2008 and February 2011. 52 patients were successfully followed up with a telephone questionnaire about effects on breast-feeding and any complications. RESULTS: All mothers had experienced problems …

[Ankyloglossia in an Anatolian Shepherd dog].

Ankyloglossia, commonknown as tongue-tie, is a rare congenital oral anomaly in dogs. A complete attachment of the lingual frenulum to the floor of the oral cavity leads to limited mobility of the tongue including problems during eating and swallowing. In humans ankyloglossia is a common anomaly in newborn infants. In our report a 5-month old Anatolian Shepherd dog was surgically treated and full function of the tongue could be achieved with a horizontal-to-vertical frenuloplasty.

Ankyloglossia: a morphofunctional investigation in children.

OBJECTIVES: To provide diagnostic criteria for ankyloglossia in children by anatomical measurements; to investigate the correlation between severity of ankyloglossia and a series of morphofunctional findings; to evaluate the potential mismatch between a clinical suspect of ankyloglossia and the authentic anatomical diagnosis. DESIGN: Two different techniques of anatomical measurements and a clinical evaluation of a series of morphofunctional findings were performed. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 200 children referred for evaluation and treatment of tongue-tie, the length of the frenulum and the i…

The effect of ankyloglossia on speech in children.

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to determine whether ankyloglossia is associated with articulation problems and the effect of frenuloplasty on speech and tongue mobility. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a prospective study of 30 children aged 1 to 12 years with ankyloglossia undergoing frenuloplasty. Outcomes were assessed by measurements of tongue mobility, speech evaluation, and parent questionnaires. RESULTS: Mean tongue protrusion improved from 14.2 mm preoperatively to 25.8 mm postoperatively (P < 0.01). Similarly, mean tongue elevation improved from 5.2 to 22 mm (P < 0.01). Preoperative speech patholo…

Ankyloglossia in Infancy: An Indian Experience.

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence, clinical presentation and management of infants with ankyloglossia. METHODS: A retrospective file review of infants less than 6 months of age with a diagnosis of ankyloglossia. RESULTS: Of the 25786 babies born during the assessment period (2007-2015), 134 (0.52%) had ankyloglossia. Sixty-four (47.7%) infants who presented with breastfeeding difficulties were diagnosed significantly earlier than the asymptomatic group (P<0.05). Of the symptomatic group, 85.9% underwent frenotomy with satisfactory results. Seventy asymptomatic infants were managed conservat…

An Alternative Method to Treat Ankyloglossia.

Ankyloglossia entails short lingual frenum, impairing satisfactory tongue movement and leading to problems related to deglutition, feeding and diction. This clinical report uses laser technology, rather than traditional surgical procedure with scalpel, to perform a lingual frenulotomy on a 9-year old child diagnosed with ankyloglossia, aiming to investigate more conservative and less traumatic dental procedures. Due to the many advantages of the laser device, such as bloodless surgical field, absence of sutures, minimal swelling and post-surgical pain, the high intensity diode laser is a viabl…
