Changes in aerosol loading before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in China: Effects of anthropogenic and natural aerosol.

Anthropogenic emissions reduced sharply in the short-term during the coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19). As COVID-19 is still ongoing, changes in atmospheric aerosol loading over China and the factors of their variations remain unclear. In this study, we used multi-source satellite observations and reanalysis datasets to synergistically analyze the spring (February-May) evolution of aerosol optical depth (AOD) for multiple aerosol types over Eastern China (EC) before, during and after the COVID-19 lockdown period. Regional meteorological effects and the radiative response were also quanti

Organohalogen contamination in passerine birds from three metropolises in China: geographical variation and its implication for anthropogenic effects on urban environments.

Contamination of organohalogen pollutants (OHPs), including dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), and dechlorane plus (DP) in three metropolises of China, Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou, and a reference rural site were determined using terrestrial residential passerine species as bioindicator. DDTs dominated in Wuhan whereas flame retardants dominated in Guangzhou and Beijing. No geographical variation was found for PCB levels but it

A quantitative assessment of natural and anthropogenic effects on the occurrence of high air pollution loading in Dhaka and neighboring cities and health consequences.

Although existing studies mainly focused on the air quality status in Bangladesh, quantifying the natural and manmade effects, the frequency of high pollution levels, and the associated health risks remained beyond detailed investigation. Air quality and meteorological data from the Department of Environment for 2012-2019 were analyzed, attempting to answer those questions. Cluster analysis of PM2.5, PM10, and gaseous pollutants implied that Dhaka and neighboring cities, Narayangonj and Gazipur, are from similar sources compared to the other major cities in the country. Apart from the transbou

Modeling seawater intrusion along the Alabama coastline using physical and machine learning models to evaluate the effects of multiscale natural and anthropogenic stresses.

Seawater intrusion threatens groundwater resources in coastal regions, including southern Baldwin County, Alabama, where the freshwater-saltwater interface dynamics remain poorly understood. To address this gap, this study uses combined physics-based and machine-learning models to quantify seawater intrusion caused by natural (storm surges) and anthropogenic (human activities) perturbations. The long short-term memory network and wavelet analysis were used to assess vertical aquifer vulnerabilities, revealing that the shallow part of the Coastal lowlands aquifer system (CL1) in the southern Ba

Effects of anthropogenic electromagnetic fields used for subsurface oil and gas exploration (controlled-source electromagnetics, CSEM) on the early development of Atlantic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus).

Controlled source electromagnetics (CSEM) uses electromagnetic fields (EMF) to detect oil reservoirs. Atlantic haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus, is a commercially important demersal fish species that can potentially be impacted by such surveys due to potential overlap with egg distribution. In this study, haddock eggs were exposed to EMF, replicating CSEM survey conditions in a laboratory. Three different EMF intensities were used to replicate different distances between the EMF source and the organism. Exposures lasted for 15 min. A worst-case scenario, i.e. 1 h exposure at the highest EMF l

Exposure to Anthropogenic Heat Was Associated with the Increased Risks of Respiratory Allergy Symptoms in Preschool Children: A New Insight into the Urban Heat Island Effect.

Anthropogenic heat (AH) exerts a substantial influence on the local urban climate and intensifies the urban heat island (UHI) effect. However, the impact of AH exposure on respiratory allergy symptoms in preschool children has not been investigated. This study conducted a cross-sectional study of 39088 Chinese preschool children to investigate the associations between multisource AH exposure (building heat, industrial heat, metabolic heat, transportation heat, and total heat) and the risks of respiratory allergy symptoms (wheezing, night-cough, and rhinitis). Exposure to higher levels of AH wa

Agricultural practices linked to shifts in groundwater microbial structure and denitrifying bacteria.

Irrigation enhances the connectivity between the surface and groundwater by facilitating the transport of energy sources and oxygen. When combined with fertilisers, the impact on groundwater microbial communities and their interactions with nitrogen cycling in aquifers is poorly understood. This study examines the impact of different landuses (irrigated and non-irrigated) on groundwater microbial communities. A total of 38 wells accessing shallow aquifers in three sub-catchments of the Murray Darling Basin, Australia, were sampled for water chemistry and microbial community structure using env

Biogeochemical dynamics in a marine storm demonstrates differences between natural and anthropogenic impacts.

This study explores the impact of a wind storm on sediment resuspension and marine biogeochemical dynamics. Additionally, the storm took place during an expedition researching bottom trawling, enabling the direct comparison of certain natural and fisheries-related disturbances. The storm was initiated by a decline in atmospheric pressure and a 2 h period of gale force winds, which was followed by over 40 h of elevated bottom currents. Storm induced turbidity, potentially a cumulative post-fishing impact, was remarkably higher compared to what was observed in a recent trawling event. Storm-indu

Anthropogenic activities explained the difference in exotic plants invasion between protected and non-protected areas at a northern subtropics biodiversity hotspot.

Biological invasion poses a major threat to biodiversity and conservation efforts in protected areas. The Greater Shennongjia Area (GSA) is one of China's 16 key areas for biodiversity, as stated in the China National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan. However, the local authorities lack appropriate data on the extent and impact of exotic species in protected areas, as well as lack the capacity and motivation to properly plan for exotic species strategy and action plan to support both prevention, control as well as management of exotic plants in their jurisdiction. In addition

Integrating Lab- and Field-Based Approaches to Decipher Individuals' Response to Anthropogenic Change.

The global expansion of human activities increasingly exposes wild animals to novel, potentially threatening conditions. Consistent behavioural responses to perceived risk may be detrimental to wildlife, either by limiting foraging opportunities or by overexposing them to lethal hazards. We examine the relationship between risk responses, movement patterns and survival in fan-tailed ravens (Corvus rhipidurus) inhabiting Israel's Dead Sea coastline. We found consistent individual differences assessed through controlled laboratory assays (novel food, objects, environment and foraging near humans

Associations between Dengue Incidence, Ecological Factors, and Anthropogenic Factors in Singapore.

Singapore experiences endemic dengue. Vector control remains the primary means to reduce transmission due to the lack of available therapeutics. Resource limitations mean that vector-control tools need to be optimized, which can be achieved by studying risk factors related to disease transmission. We developed a statistical modelling framework which can account for a high-resolution and high-dimensional set of covariates to delineate spatio-temporal characteristics that are associated with dengue transmission from 2014 to 2020 in Singapore. We applied the proposed framework to two distinct dat

Current Knowledge and Ecological and Human Impact Variables Involved in the Distribution of the Dengue Virus by Bats in the Americas.

Dengue fever, caused by the dengue virus (DENV), is one of the most important reemerging viral diseases transmitted by arthropods worldwide. DENV is maintained in nature in two transmission cycles: urban and sylvatic. The latter has only been recorded in Africa and Asia and involves nonhuman primates as natural hosts, although it has been suggested that other mammals may play a secondary role as potential reservoir host, including bats. The objective of this article is to review the current state of knowledge about DENV-positive bats in the Americas and to determine what ecological and human i

Functional response of bacterial communities in surface sediments of qingshitan reservoir to anthropogenic disturbance.

This study investigated the bacterial composition in surface sediments (0-5 cm) of Qingshitan Reservoir to elucidate their ecosystem functions in response to anthropogenic disturbances. Samples were collected in July 2023 from eight ecological points representing varying disturbance levels. High-throughput sequencing revealed significant variations in bacterial community structure. Sediments from the upstream cage aquaculture area (heavily disturbed) exhibited the highest bacterial richness, diversity, and evenness, while midstream and downstream areas (lightly disturbed) showed reduced divers

Insect-associated bacterial communities across an anthropogenic landscape.

UNLABELLED: Anthropogenic activities induce drastic changes in land use that are at least partly responsible for the ongoing global patterns of macro-biodiversity erosion. These habitat changes also impact the fitness of the resilient species, through direct effects on diet and/or indirect environmental effects. Although microbial communities associated with species can crucially influence a diverse set of their host's biological functions, studies on how microbial communities associated with wild species respond to habitat degradation remain scarce. We use metacommunities of two sympatric her

Prioritizing reducing impacts on species to minimize residual reserves.

International conservation goals have driven rapid expansion of protected areas. This growth has favored quantity over quality, and often results in residual reserves (i.e., areas where species already experience minimal anthropogenic impact). Spatial prioritization is commonly used to help design protected area networks that represent species while minimizing costs to stakeholders. This approach can result in the siting of protected areas that do not decrease impacts on species of conservation concern. Here, we show how measures of cumulative impacts on species can be used in a spatial priori

Assessment of suitable cultivation area for Paris polyphylla var. chinensis and var. yunnanensis under anthropogenic disturbance based on ensemble modeling and germplasm identification.

BACKGROUND: Rhizoma Paridis, a medicinal plant material with significant economic value, is derived from two species: Paris polyphylla var. chinensis (Pc) and var. yunnanensis (Py). However, the challenge in accurately distinguishing these two morphologically similar taxa, combined with uncertainty regarding their optimal cultivation zones under changing environmental conditions, creates significant obstacles for sustainable cultivation and quality control of this valuable medicinal resource. Climate change and human activities are major factors influencing suitable habitats for these species.

Using individual-based bioenergetic models to predict the aggregate effects of disturbance on populations: A case study with beaked whales and Navy sonar.

Anthropogenic activities can lead to changes in animal behavior. Predicting population consequences of these behavioral changes requires integrating short-term individual responses into models that forecast population dynamics across multiple generations. This is especially challenging for long-lived animals, because of the different time scales involved. Beaked whales are a group of deep-diving odontocete whales that respond behaviorally when exposed to military mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS), but the effect of these nonlethal responses on beaked whale populations is unknown. Population co

Spatial and Seasonal Variations in the Bacterial Community of an Anthropogenic Impacted Urban Stream.

Environmental changes and human activities can alter the structure and diversity of aquatic microbial communities. In this work, we analyzed the bacterial community dynamics of an urban stream to understand how these factors affect the composition of river microbial communities. Samples were taken from a stream situated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which flows through residential, peri-urban horticultural, and industrial areas. For sampling, two stations were selected: one influenced by a series of industrial waste treatment plants and horticultural farms (PL), and the other influenced by resid
