Pyridine Alkaloids in the Venom of Imported Fire Ants.

Venomous imported fire ants cause significant medical problems. Alkaloids are an important component of imported fire ant venom. Piperidine and piperideine alkaloids have been identified in fire ant venom. In this study, we studied the venom alkaloids of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, the black imported fire ant, Solenopsis richteri Forel, and the hybrid, S. invicta × S. richteri. Pyridine alkaloids were detected the first time in fire ants using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS). The thermal desorption proce…

Widespread Chemical Detoxification of Alkaloid Venom by Formicine Ants.

The ability to detoxify defensive compounds of competitors provides key ecological advantages that can influence community-level processes. Although common in plants and bacteria, this type of detoxification interaction is extremely rare in animals. Here, using laboratory behavioral assays and analyses of videotaped interactions in South America, we report widespread venom detoxification among ants in the subfamily Formicinae. Across both data sets, nine formicine species, representing all major clades, used a stereotyped grooming behavior to self-apply formic acid (acidopore grooming) in resp…

In vivo and in vitro comparison of fire ant venom and fire ant whole body extract.

Thirty-four patients with a history of immediate hypersensitivity to the sting of the imported fire ant were evaluated in a study designed to compare the diagnostic usefulness of fire ant whole body extract (WBE) preparations with that of fire ant venom (IFAV). Ninety-one percent (31/34) of the hypersensitive patients skin tested with IFAV at a maximal concentration of 1:5 X 10(3), v/v, demonstrated a wheal equal to or greater than the histamine control. Fifty-three percent (18/34) of the group were skin test positive to a WBE preparation. When the criteria for a positive skin test were relaxe

Imported fire ant immunotherapy.

Imported fire ants (IFAs) permeate many areas of the United States. The IFA allergy is a significant health problem for children and adults. Stings from IFAs cause pustules, localized reactions, and anaphylaxis. There have been at least 32 deaths attributed to IFA stings. Because of the difficulty with the extraction of venom from the fire ants, whole body extracts are the only commercially available serum for immunotherapy. Fortunately, whole body extract immunotherapy given conventionally or through the rush method has proven to be efficacious and safe. It is recommended for the treatment of…

Fire ant-detecting canines: a complementary method in detecting red imported fire ants.

In this investigation, detection dogs are trained and used in identifying red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and their nests. The methodology could assist in reducing the frequency and scope of chemical treatments for red imported fire ant management and thus reduce labor costs and chemical use as well as improve control and quarantine efficiency. Three dogs previously trained for customs quarantine were retrained to detect the scents of red imported fire ants. After passing tests involving different numbers of live red imported fire ants and three other ant species--Crematogast…

Beyond Environmental Risk Assessment: Mobilising ants for pesticide monitoring.

Reliable long-term monitoring of pesticide exposures and concentrations in natural ecosystems is critical to assess their impacts and to adopt effective mitigation strategies. Current Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) frameworks are important regulatory steps, but they do not capture the complexity of pesticide fate in real-world conditions. Robust monitoring systems are therefore necessary but most current programs focus primarily on abiotic compartments (e.g., soils, streams), leaving terrestrial biotic pathways poorly represented. We argue that ants may serve as particularly powerful moni…

Developmental biomechanics and age polyethism in leaf-cutter ants.

Many social insects display age polyethism: young workers stay inside the nest, and only older workers forage. This behavioural transition is accompanied by genetic and physiological changes, but the mechanistic origin of it remains unclear. To investigate if the mechanical demands on the musculoskeletal system effectively prevent young workers from foraging, we studied the biomechanical development of the bite apparatus in Atta vollenweideri leaf-cutter ants. Fully matured foragers generated peak in vivo bite forces of around 100 mN, more than one order of magnitude in excess of those measure…

Fire ants feed their nestmates with their own venom.

Venom secretion is widely used by ants for disease control and more generally as an external surface disinfectant. Here we report evidence that Solenopsis invicta feed their nestmates with their own venom. Venom alkaloids were found in crops and midguts of ants at concentration levels that have previously been reported as effective against various pathogens. These venom alkaloids were found in midguts of the larvae, indicating that trophallaxis must be involved in the transfer of venom, since larvae do not produce alkaloids and they depend on workers to be fed. After the mating flight, the fem…

Social insects: Stochastic switches and behavioral maturation in ants.

Changes in behavior with age are widespread in social insects. Lifetime behavioral tracking of individual ants shows these changes are fast and stereotyped, yet stochastically timed. The finding may help shed light on the mechanisms of behavioral maturation and their role in division of labor in social insects.

Ants can learn to forage on one-way trails.

The trails formed by many ant species between nest and food source are two-way roads on which outgoing and returning workers meet and touch each other all along. The way to get back home, after grasping a food load, is to take the same route on which they have arrived from the nest. In many species such trails are chemically marked by pheromones providing orientation cues for the ants to find their way. Other species rely on their vision and use landmarks as cues. We have developed a method to stop foraging ants from shuttling on two-way trails. The only way to forage is to take two separate r…

The chemistry of exploding ants, Camponotus spp. (cylindricus complex).

A detailed comparative analysis of the exocrine chemistry of nine Bruneian Camponotus species in the cylindricus complex is reported. Workers of these species are known to have hypertrophied mandibular glands and release their glandular contents suicidally from the head by rupturing the intersegmental membrane of the gaster. All of the species produce mixtures of polyacetate-derived aromatics, including hydroxyacetophenones, which display pH-dependent color changes, and aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. In addition, three species contained (6R)-2,6-dimethyl-(2E)-octen-1,8-dioic acid (9) or

Evidence for climate-mediated range expansion of hybrid wood ants.

Climate change challenges many species. To persist, species can shift ranges, respond plastically, and adapt, which all require variation. Hybridization can quickly increase genetic variation, potentially facilitating climate adaptation; however, it is unclear how hybrids respond to climatic changes. Here, we combine whole-genome, life-history, acute heat-shock, and climatic data of 69 wood ant populations across Finland to assess whether F. aquilonia × F. polyctena hybrids outperform their cold-adapted parent F. aquilonia in warming climates. Compared to F. aquilonia, hybrids are active and t

Three cuticular amides in the tripartite symbiosis of leafcutter ants.

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play various roles in insects' chemical ecology. As leafcutter ants live in a specific symbiosis with fungi, they harvest and with different bacteria, some of these CHCs might be associated with a mutualistic function within this symbiosis. To obtain a more precise picture in that respect we compared the CHC profiles of the leafcutter ants, Atta sexdens, Atta cephalotes, and Acromyrmex octospinosus inhabited by mutualistic bacteria with the profiles of Polyrhachis dives and Messor aciculatus by GC-EI-MS analysis and 28 other ant species by data from the literature…

Safe chemical repellents to prevent the spread of invasive ants.

BACKGROUND: The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one of the most dangerous invasive species in the world. Fire ants can spread by hiding among plant material and soil that are transported from infested areas in vehicles and vessels. Therefore, efficient repellents may be used to prevent fire ants from infesting transported goods. Although some fire ant repellants have been identified, novel, cost-effective and environmentally friendly materials for fire ant control are still needed. Recent studies with other model insects have suggested readily available, non-toxic alternatives (e…

Chemical signals associated with life inhibit necrophoresis in Argentine ants.

One of the most conspicuous and stereotyped activities of social insects such as ants and honey bees is necrophoresis, the removal of dead colony members from the nest. Previous researchers suggested that decomposition products such as fatty acids trigger necrophoric behavior by ant workers. However, fatty acids elicit both foraging and necrophoric responses, depending on the current nest activities (e.g., feeding or nest maintenance). Furthermore, workers often carry even freshly killed workers (dead for <1 h) to refuse piles before significant decomposition has a chance to occur. Here, we sh…

On the Biological Diversity of Ant Alkaloids.

Ants have outstanding capacity to mediate inter- and intraspecific interactions by producing structurally diverse metabolites from numerous secretory glands. Since Murray Blum's pioneering studies dating from the 1950s, there has been a growing interest in arthropod toxins as natural products. Over a dozen different alkaloid classes have been reported from approximately 40 ant genera in five subfamilies, with peak diversity within the Myrmicinae tribe Solenopsidini. Most ant alkaloids function as venom, but some derive from other glands with alternative functions. They are used in defense (e.g…
