Levator aponeurosis disinsertion in congenital entropion of the upper eyelid.

PURPOSE: To present a patient with congenital entropion of the upper eyelid caused by levator aponeurosis disinsertion. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: Surgical correction of the levator aponeurosis disinsertion corrected the upper eyelid entropion. CONCLUSIONS: Congenital upper eyelid entropion may be caused by levator aponeurosis disinsertion and treated effectively by repairing the anatomic defect.

Histochemical localization of glycoconjugates in the palmar aponeurosis of Dupuytren's patients.

Acridine orange added to the primary fixative or reduced osmium tetroxide as postfixative have been used in order to localize by thin section electron microscopy glycoconjugates in the extracellular matrix of the normal palmar aponeurosis as well as in tissues at different stages of Dupuytren's contracture. After use of acridine orange or reduced osmium tetroxide, in the nodule of the active stage an extensive network of fine filaments separated single or small bundles of collagen fibrils from each other. In the cord of the residual stage fixed in presence of acridine orange, the tightly packe…

The dorsal aponeurosis, intrinsic, hypothenar, and thenar musculature of the hand.

The intrinsic muscles of the hand consist of seven interossei and four lumbrical muscles. With the extrinsic long extensors, the intrinsic muscles act via the dorsal aponeurosis to control finger motion. The interossei also control finger abduction and adduction, and flexion of the metacarpophalangeal joints. The lumbricals are the main extensors of the interphalangeal joints. The complex structure of the dorsal aponeurosis allows coordination and individual joint motion. The muscles of the hypothenar and thenar eminences also insert into the dorsal aponeurosis and the skeleton of the small fi…

Masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia exhibits heterotopic calcification in tendons.

OBJECTIVE: Masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia is a new disease entity associated with limited mouth opening. In this study, we analyzed the microstructural characteristics of muscles and tendons in masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia by electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis to determine the elemental composition. METHODS: Histological analysis was performed to detect the calcification. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were conducted to clarify the microstructural characteristics of muscles and tendons. Energy-dis…

Central aponeurosis tears of the rectus femoris: practical sonographic prognosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study is a statistical analysis to establish whether a correlation exists between the level and degree of rectus femoris (RF) central tendon injury and the amount of time that an athlete is unable to participate subsequently, referred to as "sports participation absence" (SPA). DESIGN: Causal-comparative study. PATIENTS: 35 players from two high-level Spanish soccer teams with an injury to the central tendon of the RF based on clinical and ultrasound criteria. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Ultrasound examination was performed with an 8-2 MHz linear multifrequency transducer. All stu

Trachomatous entropion correction. Use of orbital septum and levator aponeurosis.

The technique of removing both the scarred tarsal plate and orbital septum is described for correction in cases of severe trachomatous entropion. The procedure gave about 90% satisfactory results in a series of which 35 eyes were operated. The combined technique is simple and can be performed as an office procedure.

Levator aponeurosis sandwich flap for reconstruction of upper eyelid defect.

A 72-year-old woman suffered from a sebaceous gland carcinoma on her left upper eyelid. The tumour was 13 × 5 mm without metastasis. The tumour was excised with a 5-mm safety margin, resulting in a large, full-thickness defect in which almost all of the tarsal plate, approximately half of the orbicularis oculi muscle, and part of the levator aponeurosis were lost. Reconstruction of the upper eyelid was successfully performed with a levator aponeurosis sandwich flap, upon which the posterior lamella was covered by a free tarsal graft with medial and lateral periosteal flaps, and a skin graft fr…

No Association of Plantar Aponeurosis Stiffness with Medial Longitudinal Arch Stiffness.

Lower stiffness of the medial longitudinal arch is reportedly a risk factor for lower leg disorders. The plantar aponeurosis is considered essential to maintaining the medial longitudinal arch. It is therefore expected that medial longitudinal arch stiffness is influenced by plantar aponeurosis stiffness. However, this has not been experimentally demonstrated. We examined the relationship between the plantar aponeurosis stiffness and medial longitudinal arch stiffness in humans in vivo. Thirty young subjects participated in this study. The navicular height and shear wave velocity (an index of …

Orbital septum attachment sites on the levator aponeurosis in Asians and whites.

PURPOSE: To characterize the attachment site of the orbital septum on the levator aponeurosis and the anatomic level of the inferior end of the preaponeurotic fat pad, both in Asians and whites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full-thickness sagittal sections of upper eyelids, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, were microscopically examined in 18 postmortem upper eyelids of 10 Asian cadavers (mean death age, 78 years; age range, 68-89 years) and 11 postmortem upper eyelids of 7 whites (mean death age, 88 years; age range, 78-101 years). We measured the distance from the superior tarsal border to the atta…

Functional characteristics of the foot and plantar aponeurosis under tibiotalar loading.

Structurally the foot is equivalent to a twisted plate. The hindpart is located in the sagittal plane and the forepart in the transverse plane. The transition induced by the twist creates the transverse and the longitudinal arches. Under vertical loading of the foot plate by the tibiotalar column, compressive forces are created on the dorsum and tensile forces on the plantar aspect of the foot plate. The plantar aponeurosis acting as a tie-rod when under tension relieves the tensile forces from the plantar aspect of the foot plate. The increased tension in the plantar aponeurosis in the weight…
