From the archives of the AFIP: pilocytic astrocytoma: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common pediatric central nervous system glial neoplasm and the most common pediatric cerebellar tumor. This tumor has a noteworthy benign biologic behavior that translates into an extremely high survival rate-94% at 10 years-that is by far the best of any glial tumor. Most patients present in the first 2 decades, and clinical symptoms and signs are usually of several months duration and directly related to the specific location of the tumor. The cerebellum, optic nerve and chiasm, and hypothalamic region are the most common locations, but the tumor can also be

From the archives of the AFIP. Child abuse: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

In the United States, roughly one of every 100 children is subjected to some form of neglect or abuse; inflicted injury is responsible for approximately 1,200 deaths per year. Child physical abuse may manifest as virtually any injury pattern known to medicine. Some of the injuries observed in battered children are relatively unique to this population (especially when observed in infants) and therefore are highly suggestive of nonaccidental, or inflicted, injury. Worrisome injuries include rib fracture, metaphyseal fracture, interhemispheric extraaxial hemorrhage, shear-type brain injury, verte

From the archives of the AFIP: pulmonary vasculature: hypertension and infarction.

Pulmonary hypertension is the hemodynamic consequence of vascular changes within the precapillary (arterial) or postcapillary (venous) pulmonary circulation. These changes may be idiopathic, as in primary pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, but more commonly they represent a secondary response to alterations in pulmonary blood flow. The pulmonary and systemic bronchial circulations form broad anastomoses that largely prevent infarction except in settings of markedly elevated pulmonary venous pressure, underlying malignancy, or excessive embolic burden. Causes of precapi

From the archives of the AFIP. Extralobar sequestration: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Extralobar sequestration is a rare congenital anomaly that consists of pulmonary tissue anatomically separate from normal lung and usually deriving its blood supply from systemic vessels. The lesion typically manifests in the newborn period or early infancy with symptoms of respiratory distress. Less frequently, patients present in childhood or adulthood. Grossly and microscopically, the lesion resembles lung tissue. The typical radiologic finding is a homogeneous soft-tissue mass in the lower hemithorax. However, these lesions can also occur in the mediastinum, within the diaphragm, and, rare

Harnessing the potential of blood donation archives for influenza surveillance and control.

Many blood donation services around the globe maintain large archives of serum and/or plasma specimens of blood donations which could potentially be used for serologic surveillance and risk assessment of influenza. Harnessing this potential requires robust evidence that the outcomes of influenza serology in plasma, which is rarely used, is consistent with that in serum, which is the conventional choice of specimens for influenza serology. We harvested EDTA-plasma specimens from the blood donation archives of Hong Kong Red Cross Transfusion Services, where EDTA is the type of anticoagulant used…

From the archives of the AFIP: extratesticular scrotal masses: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

The extratesticular scrotal contents consist of the epididymis, spermatic cord, and fascia derived from the embryologic descent of the testis through the abdominal wall. As opposed to intratesticular masses, most extratesticular masses are benign. Cystic masses (including hydroceles, epididymal cysts, and varicoceles) are easily diagnosed with ultrasonography (US) and are benign. Epididymitis is a common extratesticular lesion as well as the most frequent cause of an acute scrotum. It may be either acute or chronic and can be potentially complicated by epididymo-orchitis or scrotal abscess. Fi

[Historical archives of Italian nephrology: Introduction of the artificial kidney in Italy].

In Italy the first attempts at haemodialysis, first in vitro and animals and then in humans, were carried out in the early 1950s by the surgeons Mario Battezzati e Carlo Taddei of Genoa with an artificial kidney of their own design. During the same years several other surgeons and urologists in Padua, Milan, Turin, Florence, Modena, Rome, Naples and Palermo designed their own artificial kidneys, which were used to treat anuric patients suffering from acute renal failure. The lively interest in artificial kidneys led, in 1954, to the organisation of a symposium on the subject. This was the firs

From the archives of the AFIP. Cerebral intraventricular neoplasms: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Intraventricular neoplasms are readily seen on cross-sectional images, but the myriad possibilities may make a focused differential diagnosis elusive. Consideration of the tissue within and composing the ventricular lining and the clinical findings provide the means to limit the differential diagnosis when analyzing an intraventricular mass on an imaging study. Ependymomas are typically calcified, are more common in children, are more common in the fourth ventricle, and show intense enhancement on contrast-enhanced images. Subependymomas and central neurocytomas have an affinity for the anteri

[Visceral panniculitis in occult pancreatic carcinoma. Case report from clinico-pathologic archives].

The authors describe a 75-year-old man with acute abdominal disease leading to lethal prerenal failure. Necropsy revealed massive visceral panniculitis with a small adenocarcinoma of the head of the pancreas. The authors assume that a very rare, early paraneoplastic syndrome was involved.

SingHealth Radiology Archives pictorial essay Part 1: cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological cases.

The Singapore Health Services cluster (SingHealth) radiology film archives are a valuable repository of local radiological cases dating back to the 1950s. Some of the cases in the archives are of historical medical interest, i.e. cerebral angiography in the workup of patients with hemiplegia. Other cases are of historical social interest, being conditions seen during earlier stages of Singapore's development, i.e. bound feet. The archives form a unique portal into the development of local radiology as well as the national development of Singapore. A selection from the archives is published in …

Human genetics after the bomb: Archives, clinics, proving grounds and board rooms.

In this paper I track the history of post-1945 human genetics and genomics emphasizing the importance of ideas about risk to the scientific study and medical management of human heredity. Drawing on my own scholarship as it is refracted through important new work by other scholars both junior and senior, I explore how radiation risk and then later disease risk mattered to the development of genetics and genomics, particularly in the United States. In this context I excavate one of the central ironies of post-war human genetics: while studies of DNA as the origin and cause of diseases have been

From the archives of the AFIP. Gestational trophoblastic disease: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a manifestation of an aberrant fertilization event that leads to a proliferative process and, potentially, to an invasive neoplasm. The spectrum of GTD includes hydatidiform moles (complete and partial), invasive mole, choriocarcinoma, and placental site trophoblastic disease (rare). Increased levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) are associated with all forms. Ultrasonography (US), performed late in the first trimester of a pregnancy complicated by hyperemesis gravidarum, toxemia, or bleeding, is essential in the early detection of hydati

From the archives of the AFIP. Infantile hemangioendothelioma of the liver revisited.

Infantile hemangioendothelioma is a benign tumor of the liver composed of anastomosing vascular channels lined by plump endothelial cells. At initial presentation, most patients are 6 months of age or younger and have hepatomegaly or an abdominal mass. Congestive heart failure, bleeding, anemia, jaundice, and cutaneous or visceral hemangiomas may also be present. Grossly, the lesions are usually well circumscribed and may be focal, multifocal, or diffuse. Large solitary lesions are often associated with central hemorrhage or necrosis. Radiography reveals a mass that is occasionally calcified.

Radiomics integration into a picture archiving and communication system.

Radiomics is referred to as quantitative imaging of biomarkers used for clinical outcome prognosis or tumor characterization. In order to bridge radiomics and its clinical application, we aimed to build an integrated solution of radiomics extraction with an open-source Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The integrated SQLite4Radiomics software was tested in three different imaging modalities and its performance was benchmarked in lung cancer open datasets RIDER and MMD with median extraction time of 10.7 (percentiles 25-75: 8.9-18.7) seconds per ROI in three different configura

The Washington University Central Neuroimaging Data Archive.

Since the early 2000's, much of the neuroimaging work at Washington University (WU) has been facilitated by the Central Neuroimaging Data Archive (CNDA), an XNAT-based imaging informatics system. The CNDA is uniquely related to XNAT, as it served as the original codebase for the XNAT open source platform. The CNDA hosts data acquired in over 1000 research studies, encompassing 36,000 subjects and more than 60,000 imaging sessions. Most imaging modalities used in modern human research are represented in the CNDA, including magnetic resonance (MR), positron emission tomography (PET), computed to

Characterisation of molecular alterations in microdissected archival gliomas.

Classification of gliomas according to their molecular characteristics may be important in future histopathological diagnosis. However, gliomas frequently display heterogeneity at the histological, biological and molecular level. In this study of archival diagnostic gliomas, precision microdissection was used to enrich samples in the most malignant cells or to investigate intratumoural histological heterogeneity. Analysis of tumour samples microdissected from the most aggressive regions, representative of the histopathological diagnosis, revealed PTEN mutations in 4/14 anaplastic astrocytomas,
