PURPOSE: This is first report of suprachoroidal effusion occurring subsequent to argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT).
METHODS: Review of the records of the patients in question.
RESULTS: A 77-year-old woman with bilateral pseudophakia and primary open-angle glaucoma was treated with ALT when her visual fields deteriorated despite topical timolol therapy. Although ALT was initially performed without complication in one eye, treatment of the other eye led to a choroidal detachment. This was associated with temporary reduction in visual acuity, shallowing of the anterior chamber and hypotony.

We analyzed the long-term success of argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) performed in 237 eyes of 175 patients diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma and followed for up to 11 years (maximum, 132 months) after treatment. The cumulative proportion of success, defined as the avoidance of glaucoma surgery or an intraocular pressure never exceeding 22 mm Hg, was calculated throughout follow up using the Kaplan-Meier life-table analysis. 8 cases of ocular hypotony due to traumatic goniocyclodialysis were successfully treated by argonlaser photocoagulation with few complications during a follow-up of 6-68 months. The authors emphasized early application of the therapy as an effective and safe procedure to recover almost normal anatomic and physiologic structures of the chamber angle.

In group of 202 eyes in 125 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma with an observation period from 12 to 66 months (32.6 z 4.8 months) the effectiveness of ALT was analyzed in relation to the time factor. Radiation therapy for malignant gynecologic disease and prostatic cancer has resulted in increased survival and cure rates. This modality has unfortunately produced debilitating radiation proctitis. Sixty-one patients (82 eyes) were studied after argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) to determine the lasting efficacy of such treatment. This investigation, now in its fourth year, was prospective, and the information derived was analysed with the aid of a computer. Success was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) below baseline (22 mmHg). The mean follow-up time was 24.5 months, when the success rate was 74% compared with 75% at three months. Fifty-seven eyes of 49 patients with senile retinoschisis were treated by argon laser photocoagulation and followed up for 3 to 6 years. In most of the treated eyes the retinoschisis either completely or partially collapsed and in none did the retinoschisis or loss of visual field progress further. Ten patients with red nose due to telangiectasias were treated with the argon laser. Seven had telangiectasias due to rosacea, two had had rhinoplasty, and one had experienced trauma. All of the patients had a good clinical result.

Nasal telangiectasias, a common condition, can be caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet light, rosacea, topically applied corticosteroids, or rhinoplasty. Use of the argon laser for 15 to 45 minutes in a continuous mode over the entire involved area can produce considerable lightening of the nasal redness and improvement in the cosmetic appearance, as illustrated in the two cases described in this report.
