Recent Scientific Evidence Regarding Asbestos Use and Health Consequences of Asbestos Exposure.

To justify the continuous use of two million tons of asbestos every year, it has been argued that a safe/controlled use can be achieved. The aim of this review was to identify recent scientific studies that present empirical evidence of: 1) health consequences resulting from past asbestos exposures and 2) current asbestos exposures resulting from asbestos use. Articles with evidence that could support or reject the safe/controlled use argument were also identified. A total of 155 articles were included in the review, and 87 % showed adverse asbestos health consequences or high asbestos exposur…

[Asbestos-related diseases observed in Palermo (Italy) among workers exposed to asbestos].

The aim of this study was to evaluate cases of asbestos-related diseases in workers exposed to asbestos in the province of Palermo (Italy) from 2005 to 2009. Data were collected from medical records and from reports from the Prevention and Safety in the Workplace Unit of the provincial health authorities of and between Palermo. Multinomial logistic regression showed a significant association between tobacco smoke and lung cancer and between starting work at an early stage and presence of asbestosis and pleural plaques. Results confirm that over eighteen years after the entry into force of Law …

Asbestos release from whole-building demolition of buildings with asbestos-containing material.

The whole-building demolition method, which entails one-or two-story buildings pushed down by heavy equipment, loaded into trucks, and hauled away, is generally the most cost-effective means to remove small buildings. For taller buildings, a crane and wrecking ball may be used initially to reduce the height of the building. Demolitions might release asbestos fibers from friable asbestos-containing material (ACM). Fibers also might be released from nominally nonfriable ACM (Categories I and II nonfriable ACM) if it becomes friable after rough handling throughout the whole-building demolition pr…

Asbestos fiber analysis in nine lung cancer cases with high asbestos exposure.

We examined the types and sizes of 100 asbestos fibers in lung tissue obtained from 9 lung-cancer cases (5 autopsy and 4 surgical) with more than 10(4) asbestos bodies per 5 g of wet lung tissue, asbestos bodies in histological sections, and the history of occupational asbestos exposure. Evaluation of asbestos fibers by transmission electron microscopy (2,000 x magnification) revealed that most fibers were longer than 3 microns (96%) and were thicker than 0.1 micron (93%). The analytical conditions we used enabled us to identify 99.7% of all asbestos fibers as being amphibole asbestos. Crocido…

ERA Merewether - And asbestos.

After a succession of posts and studying for the Bar, Edward Merewether joined the Medical Inspectorate of Factories in 1927. Not long thereafter he was asked to undertake a study of the effects of asbestos exposure on the lungs. His results showed that asbestos workers had a significant risk of developing pulmonary fibrosis and this resulted in the promulgation of regulations to limit exposure. Some years later, Merewether showed that asbestos workers also had a higher than expected risk of developing lung cancer, but on this occasion there was no further protective legislation, and the assoc…

Criminality and Asbestos in Industry.

Criminal prosecutions of individuals in the asbestos industry are reviewed, particularly the case of asbestos owner-executive Stephan Schmidheiny. Italian courts sentenced Schmidheiny to sixteen to eighteen years in jail for creating an environmental disaster causing three thousand deaths. The convictions were overturned on a technicality, and a murder case against Schmidheiny has started. His firm, Eternit, made asbestos-cement building products in many countries. Schmidheiny directed a cover-up that the Italian Court of Appeal blamed for delaying the ban of asbestos in Italy by ten years. To…

The carcinogenicity of chrysotile asbestos.

In in vitro test systems, chrysotile is markedly toxic, causes chromosomal aberrations, and is capable of inducing morphological and preneoplastic transformation. In carefully designed animal experiments, chrysotile produces lung cancer and mesothelioma as effectively as do the amphiboles tested. Human population studies do not refute these experimental results. Chrysotile asbestos is carcinogenic to humans, especially for the induction of lung cancer and mesothelioma in exposed populations. For cancers of other sites, with the exception of laryngeal and possibly gastrointestinal cancer, the e…

Laryngeal cancer and asbestos.

A 10-year material of laryngeal carcinomas was studied retrospectively. The chest X-rays were examined for pleural plaques (PP), which are a reliable sign of earlier asbestos exposure. In 14 of 156 available chest X-rays typical PP were found; a significantly higher incidence that expected in the region (p less than 0.001), but in agreement with earlier studies, which are reviewed. It is suggested that all patients with laryngeal carcinoma should be questioned about exposure to asbestos, and that in patients occupationally exposed to asbestos, the occurrence of laryngeal carcinoma should be co…

Pathogenic effects of asbestos.

The enormous increase in the use of asbestos during this century has necessitated the intensive study of its pathogenic effects. The occurrence of pulmonary parenchymal and pleural fibrosis and an increased prevalence of pulmonary and gastrointestinal carcinoma and of pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma have been established. A relationship, also, to laryngeal carcinoma is probable. Mesothelioma has been associated with indirect occupational, domestic, and neighborhood exposure, and the possibility of a similar correlation of pulmonary carcinoma with low exposure has been suggested. Pulmonary …

The ingestion of asbestos fibers.

Feeding of baboons with crocidolite showed small numbers of asbestos needles 0.5-1 mum in ashed tissue of the gut wall, which probably came from iron-containing macrophages. It is suggested that pleural plaques and hyaline nodules in the peritoneum represent a hypersensitivity reaction to ferritin protein coating on asbestos fibers. In South Africa only a few peritoneal mesotheliomas come from the asbestos areas, and the incidence of gastrointestinal carcinomas is no greater than normal. Intrapleural and intraperitoneal injection produces unrealistic situations. Calcium salts are deposited on …

Benign asbestos pleural diseases.

The global incidence of asbestos-related lung diseases is expected to continue to rise. Although much attention is devoted to malignant diseases induced by asbestos, benign asbestos pleural diseases (pleural plaques, benign asbestos-related pleural effusion, diffuse pleural thickening, and rounded atelectasis) are common in clinical practice and often produce diagnostic difficulties. The authors describe the clinical features of benign asbestos-related pleural disease, before focusing on recent advances in radiology and on controversies surrounding the pathogenesis of asbestos-induced pleural …

[Asbestos and respiratory diseases].

Previous occupational asbestos exposure (more rarely environmental or domestic exposure) may induce various pleural and/or pulmonary, benign or malignant diseases, sometimes with a very long latency for malignant mesothelioma (MM). Asbestos has been widely extracted and used in Western countries and in emerging or developing countries, resulting in a peak of MM incidence in France around 2020 and likely in a world pandemic of asbestos-induced diseases. These patients have mostly benign respiratory diseases (pleural plugs) but may also be diagnosed with lung cancer or malignant pleural mesothel…

Autoimmunity and asbestos exposure.

Despite a body of evidence supporting an association between asbestos exposure and autoantibodies indicative of systemic autoimmunity, such as antinuclear antibodies (ANA), a strong epidemiological link has never been made to specific autoimmune diseases. This is in contrast with another silicate dust, crystalline silica, for which there is considerable evidence linking exposure to diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Instead, the asbestos literature is heavily focused on cancer, including mesothelioma and pulmonary carcinoma. Possible co…

Teratogenicity of asbestos in mice.

Possible teratogenicity of 3 different asbestos (crocidolite, chrysotile and amosite) was assessed in CD1(ICR) mice. Dams on day 9 of gestation were given a single intraperitoneal administration at dose of 40 mg/kg body weight of asbestos suspended in 2% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose solution in phosphate buffered saline, while dams in the control group were given vehicle (10 ml/kg body weight). Dams and fetuses were examined on day 18 of gestation. To compare with the control group, the mean percentage of live fetuses in implantations in the group given crocidolite and the incidence of dams …

The patient with asbestos exposure.

Attention to the hazards of asbestos has aroused concern among many healthy persons who have been exposed at some time to one of the world's most versatile materials. Present standards for exposure to asbestos, however, may not fully protect workers from asbestos-induced pulmonary malignancy. To evaluate the patient who has had some asbestos exposure, the physician should focus on the pulmonary system, take a thorough occupational history, conduct a physical examination and pulmonary function studies, and obtain chest films. In managing the patient with asbestosis, removal from further occupat…
