Acute pulmonary melioidosis in a child: A case report and review of literature.

Melioidosis is a rare potentially fatal infection caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is endemic in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia and an emerging pathogen in India. It is a largely under-diagnosed disease and an imitator of tuberculosis, both clinically and radiologically.

Imported Case of Melioidosis in Oman: Case Report.

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. It is most commonly described in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia and some imported cases in non-endemic areas. We describe the case of a 55-year-old Omani man with fulminant sepsis who worked in Laos, Cambodia. B. pseudomallei was isolated from the patient's blood and was identified by means of microbiological and biochemical tests. We highlight the importance of careful attention to non-fermentative gram-negative rods in a septic patients who have worked or travelled to Southeast Asia.

Burden of skin disease and associated socioeconomic status in Asia: A cross-sectional analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990-2017.

INTRODUCTION: Skin diseases have a significant global impact on quality of life, mental health, and loss of income. The burden of dermatologic conditions and its relationship with socioeconomic status in Asia is currently not well understood. METHODS: We selected Global Burden of Disease Study datasets to analyze disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 50 Asian countries, including Central Asia, northern Asia, eastern Asia, western Asia, southeastern Asia, and southern Asia, between 1990 and 2017. We compared DALYs to the socioeconomic status using the sociodemographic index and gross domes…

Paleogenomics retraces the ancient population history of Southwestern East Asia for the past 12 000 years.

Southwestern East Asia, a key intersection linking southern East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Tibetan Plateau, is a crucial area for the study of early human migrations. However, ancient DNA studies in the eastern part of the region, particularly in Guizhou, are still lacking. We present the first genomic study of Guizhou populations from a time period spanning 12 000 years, including five Guizhou individuals older than 10 000 years. Combined with published Guangxi and Yunnan samples, we reveal a complex genetic history of human populations in southwestern East Asia from the Paleolithic to th

Epidemiology and investigation of melioidosis, Southern Arizona.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a bacterium endemic to Southeast Asia and northern Australia, but it has not been found to occur endemically in the United States. We report an ostensibly autochthonous case of melioidosis in the United States. Despite an extensive investigation, the source of exposure was not identified.

A Systematic Review of the Prevalence of Germline BRCA mutations in North Asia Breast Cancer Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The BRCA1/2 mutation status testing is the global standard of care for breast cancer patients with a family history of cancer. BRCA1/2 mutations are known to be ethno-specific. For some ethnic groups of the Northern Asia (Buryats, Yakuts, Altaians, Tuvans, Khakasses, etc.) the founder mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes have not been revealed. This systematic review was conducted to assess the prevalence of BRCA1/2 mutation in breast cancer patients inhabiting Eastern Europe and Northern Asia (or Siberia). METHODS: A total of 23,561 studies published between 2014 and 2024 were analyzed,

Geoepidemiological big data approach to sarcoidosis: geographical and ethnic determinants.

In sarcoidosis, a rare multiorgan disease of unknown aetiology characterised by non-caseating epitheloid cell granulomas, three geoepidemiological factors are major aetiopathogenic factors: geolocation, ethnicity, and personal environment. Geographically, sarcoidosis is mainly reported in the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest incidence rates uniformly reported in countries located at the highest latitudes. The main geoepidemiological-driven differences across the world are of greater female involvement in Southern Europe, the Southern US and Japan, a differentiated radiological pattern (pr

Predicting morbidity in older travellers during a short-term stay in the tropics: the ELDEST study.

BACKGROUND: Older persons may suffer more from travel-related health problems because of ageing and underlying chronic disorders. Knowledge on who is more likely to have these health problems helps to tailor travel health advice more specifically. This study aimed to determine predictors of travel-related morbidity in older travellers by assessing their pre-travel characteristics and performance using physical and cognitive functioning tests. METHODS: Multicentre prospective cohort study among older travellers (≥60 years) who consulted one of the participating Dutch travel clinics. Handgrip s

Global, regional and national burden of primary liver cancer by subtype.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) are the two main histological subtypes of primary liver cancer. Estimates of the burden of liver cancer by subtype are needed to facilitate development and evaluation of liver cancer control globally. We provide worldwide, regional and national estimates of HCC and iCCA incidence using high-quality data. METHODS: We used population-based cancer registry data on liver cancer cases by histological subtype from 95 countries to compute the sex- and country-specific distributions of HCC, iCCA and other specifie

Abscesses due to Melioidosis: A case-based review.

Melioidosis is caused by percutaneous inoculation or inhalation of Burkholderia pseudomallei, predominantly among individuals with risk factors (diabetes mellitus, immunosuppression, etc.) from endemic areas of South Asia, Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. While some patients present acutely with sepsis and multi-organ failure, others present with a subacute to chronic course characterised by abscess formation. We present nine representative cases, each with an abscess at a separate site (lung, skin, bone/ joint, prostate, parotid gland, liver, spleen, brain and orbits). Using these cases

Genetic diversity of Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates in Australia.

Melioidosis is caused by the gram-negative saprophytic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is endemic to southeast Asia and northern Australia. We have previously found evidence of geographic localization of strains based on multilocus sequence typing (MLST). In this study, we examined the diversity of 277 isolates from northern Australia, which were resolved into 159 different sequence types. No sequence types were common to both Queensland and the Northern Territory, and there was significant differentiation between the alleles present in the two regions. The considerable diversity in

The potential impact of the extended vitamin D fortification policy during pregnancy varies by continent of origin - a population-representative Swedish cohort.

PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the potential impact of Sweden's extended fortification policy, launched in 2018, on vitamin D intake during pregnancy, depending on continent of origin. METHODS: The population-representative GraviD cohort was conducted within the antenatal care in 2013-2014 in Southwestern Sweden. Background data including country of origin were collected through questionnaires. In the third trimester, participants (N = 1761) answered a vitamin D questionnaire which included intakes of margarine, milk, and fermented milk. Reported vitamin D intake in 2013-2014 was compared to si

Evolution and circulation of Yersinia pestis in the Northern Caspian and Northern Aral Sea regions in the 20th-21st centuries.

According to the whole genome SNP analysis of 38 Yersinia pestis strains isolated in the foci of the Northern Caspian and Northern Aral Sea regions in the 20th-early 21st centuries, between 1912 and 2015, the spatial and temporal structure of the 2.MED population of a medieval biovar in this region was determined. A phylogenetic branch 2.MED4 was identified which preceded the 2.MED1 branch that diverged later. 2.MED1 strains became the etiological agent of high-mortality plague outbreaks that occurred in the Northern Caspian region at the beginning of the 20th century. Later in the 20th centur
