Muscle plays a more superior role than fat in bone homeostasis: A cross-sectional study of old Asian people.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to discover the role of fat and muscle in bone structures, as well as the relationship between obesity and sarcopenia on age-related osteoporosis. METHODS: A total of 400 participants (65.0 ± 8.2 years old, 42.3% women) were recruited. Fat, muscle, bone parameters, basic demographics, medical history, physical performance and activity, and calcium intake of participants were obtained from datasets. The diagnosis of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity was based on current recommendations. Pearson correlation, non-linear regression models, and decision tr

Suicide among Asian young people aged under 25 years in Aotearoa New Zealand: different methods warrant different preventive initiatives.

BACKGROUND: The Asian population is growing rapidly in New Zealand and is expected to overtake Māori and Pacific population groups by 2038. Although there has been research on suicide in elderly Asian people in New Zealand, there is relatively little knowledge regarding suicide within Asian young people. AIMS: To describe the characteristics and prevalence of suicide among Asian young people aged 10-24 years between 2002 and 2017. METHODS: A retrospective review of all child and adolescent suicide deaths in New Zealand was conducted using a national database. RESULTS: Results include a patt…

Hyperhomocysteinaemia as a potential marker of early renal function decline in middle-aged Asian people without chronic kidney disease.

PURPOSE: High levels of serum total homocysteine (tHcy), often observed in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, little is known about the relationship between tHcy and renal function in healthy individuals. We examined whether tHcy levels are related to renal function in Asian individuals without CKD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 2032 subjects, aged 40-64 years. Individuals with kidney diseases or other conditions that could affect tHcy were excluded. Renal function was determined by estimated glomerular filtration rate

Interventions supporting people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups in the United Kingdom with musculoskeletal disorders: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) significantly impact quality of life, particularly among Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities in the UK, who face disproportionate burdens and barriers to care. Despite growing recognition of ethnic health disparities, there is limited understanding of interventions tailored to these populations. This scoping review aimed to map the existing literature on interventions for MSDs among Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups in the UK, identifying key approaches, gaps, and opportunities for culturally appropriate healthcare delivery. METHOD

Diabetogenic elevated childhood total fat in South Asian and Black African/Caribbean people relates to adverse early life growth and low socioeconomic position compared with White people in the UK.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Excess type 2 diabetes mellitus in minority ethnic groups remains unexplained, although greater fat mass makes a strong contribution. We hypothesised that height and weight through infancy in South Asian and Black African/Caribbean subgroups is more adverse than in White populations. These, allied to poor socioeconomic position, determine greater fat mass at age 7 years. METHODS: We report a secondary analysis from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, including 12,280 births of White ethnicity, and 358 of Indian, 650 of Pakistani, 268 of Bangladeshi, 163 of Black Caribbean and 277

The dietary practices and beliefs of British South Asian people living with inflammatory bowel disease: a multicenter study from the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Epidemiological associations have implicated factors associated with Westernization, including the Western diet, in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The role of diet in IBD etiopathogenesis, disease control and symptom management remains incompletely understood. Few studies have collected data on the dietary habits of immigrant populations living with IBD. Our aim was to describe the dietary practices and beliefs of British South Asians with IBD. METHODS: A 30-item questionnaire was developed and consecutively administered to 255 British South Asians with

National Rates of Lower Extremity Amputation in People With and Without Diabetes in a Multi-Ethnic Asian Population: a Ten Year Study in Singapore.

OBJECTIVE: Population level data from Asia on amputation rates in people with and without diabetes are extremely limited. Hence it is unclear how the rising diabetes prevalence in Asia has affected the amputation burden. The present study examined national amputation rates in people with and without diabetes in Singapore from 2008 to 2017 in the context of increasing diabetes prevalence and health system changes. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study using national population data for ages 16 - 100 years obtained from the Ministry of Health Singapore administrative datasets. A

The role of salt intake and salt sensitivity in the management of hypertension in South Asian people with chronic kidney disease: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of salt restriction to lower blood pressure (BP) in Bangladeshi patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that a tailored intervention intended to reduce salt intake in addition to standard care will achieve a greater reduction in BP in UK Bangladeshi patients with CKD than standard care alone. DESIGN: A randomised parallel-group controlled trial conducted over a 6 month period. SETTING: A tertiary renal unit based in acute care hospital in East London. PARTICIPANTS: 56 adult participants of Bangladeshi origin w

'Find Your Float': A Public Health Approach to Addressing Drowning Inequities in People of African, Caribbean and Asian Heritage: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Drowning is a largely preventable global public health problem. Many unintended drownings are linked to the initial responses to cold-water immersion (cold shock), which includes a rapid involuntary cardio-respiratory response that increases the risk of aspirating water within the first two minutes of immersion. Floating rather than struggling to swim can help survival in this circumstance. In light of early research and subsequent changes in anthropometry, we are re-examining whether bone mineral density (BMD) in people from African, Caribbean, and Asian communities influences their float. Acute kidney injury predicts the risk of adverse cardio renal events and all cause death in southeast Asian people with type 2 diabetes.

Patients with diabetes are susceptible to acute kidney injury (AKI) as compared to counterparts without diabetes. However, data on the long-term clinical outcome of AKI specifically in people with diabetes are still scarce. We sought to study risk factors for and adverse cardio-renal outcomes of AKI in multi-ethnic Southeast Asian people with type 2 diabetes. 1684 participants with type 2 diabetes from a regional hospital were followed an average of 4.2 (SD 2.0) years. Risks for end stage kidney disease (ESKD), major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause death after AKI were asses…

Perceptions of People From South Asian Backgrounds With Chronic Kidney Disease on Digital Health Interventions: Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Consultation Focus Group.

INTRODUCTION: Digital health interventions (DHIs) are increasingly popular as a potential method to address educational and support needs of individuals with long-term conditions, as they are largely accessible to most people, can be highly effective, and delivered at low cost. We have developed a DHI to better support chronic kidney disease (CKD) self-management and demonstrated its efficacy in a UK-based clinical trial. The trial population, however, was fairly homogeneous, and those from underserved populations (including ethnic minority groups), who would have likely benefited from the DHI

European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) Criteria With Population-Based Skeletal Muscle Index Best Predicts Mortality in Asians With Cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Multiple definitions of sarcopenia exist and the acceptable criterion that best predicts outcome is lacking. We estimated the prevalence of sarcopenia based on four criteria and assessed their utility in predicting mortality in cirrhotics. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, consecutive Asian patients with cirrhosis underwent testing for handgrip strength (HGS) and estimation of skeletal muscle index (SMI) using computed tomography at the third lumbar vertebra. Sarcopenia was defined based on the Western cut-off (WC; SMI < 50 cm2/m2 for men and <39 cm2/m2 for women
