Under observation were kept 80 patients with signs pointing to the sick sinus syndrome. The term asthenia comes from the Greek (centsqsneia, a: privation, without; esthénos: vigor, force), it means absence of strength, vigor or force. It is a symptom, difficult to define, with a set of vague sensations, different for each patient. It is a frequent cause of consult, almost 30% in ambulatory settings. An examination of 319 patients with hypertrophic form of autoimmune thyroiditis, including 157 patients with diffusive and 162 - with diffusive-nodule structure of the gland, has demonstrated the appearance of asthenic disorders during the euthyroid phase of the disease. Characteristics of these disorders relative to the thyroid gland structure and its diffusive or diffusive-nodule form were found. The association between changes in the immune homeostasis and characteristics of mental disorders was revealed.

We report a case of mitochondrial myopathy discovered in a 55-year old woman who was being investigated for the cause of her asthenia. Physical examination showed ptosis of the upper eyelid and proximal muscle deficit. Histological examination of a muscle biopsy disclosed rare fibres with mitochondrial aggregates. Biochemical exploration of muscle tissue revealed a double enzyme deficit involving complexes I and IV of the respiratory chain.
