How Does Long Term Use of Surgical Face Mask Affect the Voice in Normophonic Subjects?

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of the longterm-use of surgical face mask (SFM) on acoustic and auditory-perceptual voice parameters in normophonic subjects without any known risk factor related to voice disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 73 normophonic subjects who were previously included in a couple of studies before the COVID-19 outbreak, 25 people (18 female and 7 male) who were free of any known risk factor related to voice disorders during the outbreak were re-evaluated to assess the long-term effect of SFM on voice by using acoustic (mean F0, Jitter-local, Shimmer-local, Cepstral

Hearing and music in dementia.

Music is a complex acoustic signal that relies on a number of different brain and cognitive processes to create the sensation of hearing. Changes in hearing function are generally not a major focus of concern for persons with a majority of neurodegenerative diseases associated with dementia, such as Alzheimer disease (AD). However, changes in the processing of sounds may be an early, and possibly preclinical, feature of AD and other neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this chapter is to review the current state of knowledge concerning hearing and music perception in persons who have a demen

Mapping the landscape of tests employed in diagnosing developmental auditory processing disorder in adults: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a common but often overlooked neurodevelopmental disorder affecting auditory cognition with psychological, physical, and social consequences. Despite affecting all ages, research on APD diagnosis primarily focuses on children, leaving adult diagnostic criteria and evidence-based tests and guidelines poorly defined. This scoping review aims to map tests used to diagnose developmental APD in adults and identify gaps in the literature. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted across ten databases (ERIC, CINAHL, Scopus, PubPsych, PsycINFO, PubMed, C

Decreased sound tolerance: hyperacusis, misophonia, diplacousis, and polyacousis.

Definitions, potential mechanisms, and treatments for decreased sound tolerance, hyperacusis, misophonia, and diplacousis are presented with an emphasis on the associated physiologic and neurophysiological processes and principles. A distinction is made between subjects who experience these conditions versus patients who suffer from them. The role of the limbic and autonomic nervous systems and other brain systems involved in cases of bothersome decreased sound tolerance is stressed. The neurophysiological model of tinnitus is outlined with respect to how it may contribute to our understanding

Prevalence of Work-Related Voice Disorders in Voice Professionals: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence of work-related voice disorders (WRVD) among the voice professionals. METHODS: The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021250121). The search was performed in the Embase, Lilacs, Medline, SCOPUS, and Web of Sciences databases. There were no limitations to the year of publication and the search included observational studies which reported data on the prevalence of dysphonia in voice professionals measured through vocal complaints, vocal self-assessment, the auditory-perceptual judgment of the voice, and laryngoscopy examinations. The critical a

The neglected neglect: auditory neglect.

Whereas visual and somatosensory forms of neglect are commonly recognized by clinicians, auditory neglect is often not assessed and therefore neglected. The auditory cortical processing system can be functionally classified into 2 distinct pathways. These 2 distinct functional pathways deal with recognition of sound ("what" pathway) and the directional attributes of the sound ("where" pathway). Lesions of higher auditory pathways produce distinct clinical features. Clinical bedside evaluation of auditory neglect is often difficult because of coexisting neurological deficits and the binaural na

Increased striatal functional connectivity with auditory cortex in tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a common auditory perceptual disorder whose neural substrates are under intense debate. One physiologically based model posits the dorsal striatum to play a key role in gating auditory phantoms to perceptual awareness. Here, we directly test this model along with the roles of auditory and auditory-limbic networks in tinnitus non-invasively by comparing resting-state fMRI functional connectivity patterns in chronic tinnitus patients against matched control subjects without hearing loss. We assess resting-state functional connectivity of the caudate dorsal striatum (area LC), caudate

Navigating auditory assessment in autistic individuals: a narrative review.

Abnormal sensory responses have been a diagnostic criterion for autism since 2013, with auditory hypersensitivities representing one of the most frequently reported symptoms. It is not unusual for children with autism, some of whom are as yet undiagnosed, to present clinically to specialists with a history of auditory symptoms in the context of normal hearing. This narrative review paper provides a theoretical background and model to account for autism-associated characteristics that arise within the auditory nervous system. The review highlights the need to assess these symptoms by a multidis

Functional auditory disorders.

There are a number of auditory symptom syndromes that can develop without an organic basis. Some of these, such as nonorganic hearing loss, affect populations similar to those presenting with functional somatosensory and motor symptoms, while others, such as musical hallucination, affect populations with a significantly different demographic and require different treatment strategies. Many of these conditions owe their origin to measurably abnormal peripheral sensory pathology or brain network activity, but their pathological impact is often due, at least in part, to overamplification of the s

Cepstral Peak Prominence Values for Clinical Voice Evaluation.

Purpose The goal of this study was to employ frequently used analysis methods and tasks to identify values for cepstral peak prominence (CPP) that can aid clinical voice evaluation. Experiment 1 identified CPP values to distinguish speakers with and without voice disorders. Experiment 2 was an initial attempt to estimate auditory-perceptual ratings of overall dysphonia severity using CPP values. Method CPP was computed using the Analysis of Dysphonia in Speech and Voice (ADSV) program and Praat. Experiment 1 included recordings from 295 patients with medically diagnosed voice disorders and 50

The sensory basis of reading problems.

Learning to read is much more difficult than learning to speak. Most children teach themselves to speak with little or no difficulty. Yet a few years later when they come to learn to read they have to be taught how to do it; they do not pick up reading by themselves. This is because we speak in words and syllables, but we write in phonemes. Syllables do not naturally break down into the sounds of letters and letter units (i.e., phonemes) because these do not correspond to physiologically distinct articulatory gestures (Liberman, Shankweiler, & Studdert-Kennedy, 1967). Alphabetic writing was on

Non-verbal sound processing in the primary progressive aphasias.

Little is known about the processing of non-verbal sounds in the primary progressive aphasias. Here, we investigated the processing of complex non-verbal sounds in detail, in a consecutive series of 20 patients with primary progressive aphasia [12 with progressive non-fluent aphasia; eight with semantic dementia]. We designed a novel experimental neuropsychological battery to probe complex sound processing at early perceptual, apperceptive and semantic levels, using within-modality response procedures that minimized other cognitive demands and matching tests in the visual modality. Patients wi

Perceptual consequences of disrupted auditory nerve activity.

Perceptual consequences of disrupted auditory nerve activity were systematically studied in 21 subjects who had been clinically diagnosed with auditory neuropathy (AN), a recently defined disorder characterized by normal outer hair cell function but disrupted auditory nerve function. Neurological and electrophysical evidence suggests that disrupted auditory nerve activity is due to desynchronized or reduced neural activity or both. Psychophysical measures showed that the disrupted neural activity has minimal effects on intensity-related perception, such as loudness discrimination, pitch discri

Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index in the Lithuanian Language.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to validate the Acoustic Voice Quality Index in Lithuanian language (AVQI-LT) and investigate the feasibility and robustness of its diagnostic accuracy, differentiating normal and dysphonic voice. METHODS: A total of 184 native Lithuanian subjects with normal voices (n = 46) and with various voice disorders (n = 138) were asked to read aloud the Lithuanian text and to sustain the vowel /a/. A sentence with 13 syllables and a 3-second midvowel portion of the sustained vowel were edited. Both speech tasks were concatenated, and perceptually rated for

Clinical and audiological findings in a case of auditory agnosia.

A case is reported of severe agnosia for verbal and non-verbal sounds without associated aphasic disorder. A CT scan revealed bilateral, temporal lobe lesions from two ischaemic accidents that had occurred 9 months apart. The search for subtle deficits in the patient showed normal sensitivity to changes in the intensity and frequency of simple sounds; in contrast, his ability to discriminate sound duration and musical note sequences was severely impaired. The simultaneous recording of the whole auditory-evoked response pattern revealed no abnormality in the early components, which reflect the

Altered folate metabolism disrupts auditory function from neonatal vocalizations to adult perceptual precision.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate‐reductase (MTHFR) is a critical enzyme in folate-dependent one-carbon metabolism. While MTHFR polymorphisms have been linked to sensorineural hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disorders in humans, the translation of early-life metabolic stress into long-term sensory processing and perceptual consequences has remained unclear. Here, we combined neonatal ultrasonic vocalization analysis, adult auditory-brainstem recordings, two-photon calcium imaging of the auditory cortex, and high-resolution psychophysics to map the effects of partial Mthfr deficiency across differe
